This is incredible! Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are not fully independent but still have many of their own laws and separate identity to that of the Netherlands. This is why are considered to be constituent countries and why this is such an important and big deal. Together, they are home to just over 300,000 people, making them about as large in population as Iceland. This is truly a milestone worth celebrating. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

As someone has some gay friends living on Sint Maarten, I was so happy when they told me about this ruling. Most news cites are leaving them out of the headlines and only mention Aruba and Curaçao. The last few months have been awesome if you think about it. Nepal, Thailand, Liechtenstein, Latvia, (civil unions) Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten. Early in the year was Greece and Estonia. What a year!

Now I kinda want to visit these countries, even though I am aware it was the fact they are part of the Dutch Kingdom that made them adopt the law. The Netherlands encourages all countries in union with them to respect human rights and I respect them for that.

Actually, they are constituent countries, if you Google it. 😁 Think of them like Greenland, Faroe Islands, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Scotland etc. They are not fully independent, but they are still “countries.”

I am pretty sure same sex marriage is not legal in Saint Maarten and only the ones performed in the Netherlands have minimal recognition
