The driver may have committed a crime. The section of the highway is curved, so it is entirely possible he did not realize the protesters were there until moments prior. But he stopped the truck for the one person who tripped and fell in front of him. Clearly not evil and in control of his vehicle. The driver may have just been scared to find himself unexpectedly caught on the road surrounded by people, and did everything he could in the seconds he had to react.

I drive a big concrete truck and I can tell you when I'm fully loaded I weight around 80,000 pounds. IF I am going 60mph it takes me well over 5 or 6 city blocks to come to a complete stop. AND i have to down shift the transmission to do it to hold back the loads weight otherwise I'm just burning off break pad. Those breaks really cant make much impact on slowing down until I'm under 30. they help yes, but with the kinetic energy behind me, not much. That's why big trucks have the "Jake breaks" that everyone loves to hate, to help the transmission hold back the load when slowing down. From the video I see he was already trying to slow down, Id say he was probable down to 25 or 30 when he was on camera. yes it takes that distance to come to a stop, its why trucks in stop and go traffic move so slow. part of it is getting the load to move, part is keeping slow incase you need to slam the breaks!. the Bigger question is not how fast he was going, but why he was even on that road. If the police had allowed the protesters to be up there then the ramps should have been closed off and incoming traffic diverted. If they did not, then there's not much you can do. ALSO before you go blaming the driver outright, What was the approach like? was it a straight shot in so there was noway he could miss seeing the crowd, or was it after a steep incline or hard curve where he wouldn't have scene them straight away?

Until he passed away last year my Cousin drove fuel tankers in the vegas area for many years. I was always curious about truck stuff and would ask him many things about what its like driving them,,, Now I have no idea what exactly happened in this video but from what I see it looks like that truck was simply driving down the interstate or freeway whatever and suddenly found all this chaos going on in front of him.. At which point he did exactly what he has to do,, keep traveling in the lane he was in while stopping as safely as he could,, which he did do... A full tanker of fuel can't just lock up the brakes or veer out of his lane when its a hazmat truck which tankers are.. They can not risk going over on there sides so no matter what may suddenly appear in the lane in front of them if they cant slow it fast enough then they must drive straight into it as a burning tanker is a bigger problem then anything they may plough into.... The only thing I see wrong being done in the video is that all those people were on the highway.
