Breaking the 24 Hours Endurance Record with Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun | evo India

Breaking records is something we take very, very seriously at evo India! So when we had an opportunity to break our very own record of most distance covered in 24 hours, we couldn't let it go. This time, we have two Volkswagen Virtus GT, a Virtus 1.0-litre, and two Taigun 1.0-litre; a total of five cars. And we were not going to be content with just one record, so planned to break, and set, a whole bunch of other records. But breaking records is never easy. It's a test of man and machine. Right from the drivers to every last person in the pits, and then the cars that were at their max for the whole 24 hours. Except for that one Taigun which was out to set the record for highest fuel efficiency over 24 hours for a turbo-petrol engine. But that's no easy task either -- it commands focus and precision. All of this also comes down to pin-point strategy execution -- refuelling, driver change, and tyre change. Talking of, massive thanks to Apollo Tyres for providing us with all the tyres we needed to set the record. And on that note, we couldn't have done it without the help of our friends at Rayo Racing, and the rest of the automotive fraternity who had come in to help us break the previous record of 4384.73km set in cars with much higher displacement than these. That should give you a reference of how challenging this is going to be. But, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Truth bomb. The earlier record of 4384.73km looked very difficult to break, so much so that we didn’t even script that into the story board. But the Taigun & Virtus were so fast, right from the second the flag dropped, that we smashed those records by a massive margin!

@@NitinMathewGeorge Result would probably be identical. Both of them have 45L tanks. Verna will probably achieve a higher top speed and cover a higher distance because it has 10 HP more.

I truly love this car, I own Taigun GT 1.5 L manual and driving and handling this car is fantastic. I used drive to my hometown Trivandrum from Bangalore its around 750km in the same day around 13.5 hrs of drive. I find Taigun is effortless driving compared to my previous car. Its giving good fuel efficiency of around 16 to 19km if we drive with in 100km. Only negative is hard suspension. Overall highly satisfied and recommend to buy 1.5 L engine.

1.0 is a beast, who can think of it touching it at 200. I had full trust on 1.0, when I bought Slavia 1.0 AT, I test drove 1.0 to 170 at few milliseconds and car was asking for more. I was thinking it might go around 190, but 200 is super 😮

What a great achievement evo India and VW group 🎉. But I don't understand why you need to change or rotate the tyres. 4-5k kilometres are nothing for a new tyres. And Apollo alnac is a great performance tyre.

At that speed for such a long time, the performance degrades rapidly. But you're right, under normal usage nothing will happen to these tyres in such short distances.

What was (or were) the records it was aimed to break, and which ones did it to. If the list is long, I'm sorry; you may truncate it to primary ones. This question aims to give a glimmer of hope to manual transmission lovers (enthusiasts). We purchased our first family car in 2022, and the only reason no VW was on the list was the lack of a manual transmission, and even if a manual transmission trim existed, it had two airbags. Finally, thank you very much once again, and additional gratitude for including a manual transmission.

@@evoIndia I purchased VW POLO in 2013 Aug and Purchased VW VENTO in 2015 April. I drove Polo for 1.3lakh Kms and Vento for 1.5Lakh Kms. I still having VW Polo with me and sold Vento last month to buy new car. I did test drive both Taigun and Virtus 1.5 GT DSG and i have so much confusion which one to pick and finally booked VW Taigun 1.5 GT.

Hey, the 29.9kmpl fuel economy was for the mileage run Taigun which was being driven at 55kmph only. The high-speed cars returned about 6-7kmpl. Hope this helps.

10kmpl is possible only in medium traffic. It is More like 7 to 8kmpl in heavy traffic and bad roads (not just due to road conditions but also due to bad drivers on it) which cause you to brake every 50m.

What was car condition before putting them on track? Is it new car or used car by someone? Odometer reading?
