Props to both Jeannie and Mama Mai for trying to confront the behaviors of their parents. 👏🏽👏🏽Letting your parents know that some of their methods did not help raise you in the best way and being able to say that to their face can be so daunting. I'm especially happy that Mama Mai tried to confront her father about it. Although he doesn't acknowledge how he traumatized her, he should hear (just like ALL parents should) that his way was not always right.

When I told my mom about my childhood trauma, she couldn’t stop blaming herself and crying. She felt so much guilt. I don’t see that remorse with Mama Mai. But she’s starting to see her failings, and that’s a good first step. She’s trying and making baby steps towards progress though, and that’s always positive. Keep up the good work Mama Mai

As a mother of a young adult, I'm learning so much about how to back-off from some of my beliefs and how to listen better and to trust my son's intuition. In my experience growing up, one of the things that hurt me most is that my folks taught me to be quiet out of respect and not to talk back so I was frustrated for not being allowed to stand up for myself. Now, as an adult, it makes me scream and yell in order to be heard, when it often times isn't warranted. Never too late to grow and learn better. I simply adore Mama Mai. Both my parents (divorced) are the same. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to experience these breakthroughs, and because of that, I was stuck for a really long time. I heard a quote once that helped me change my perspective a bit. It went - "just because something isn't your fault, does not mean it's not your responsibility". I interpreted it as, we can't dwell and stir in pain (or worse, pass on the pain to others) simply because our loved one isn't willing to do the work with us. Although it may not be fair, and the source of pain isn't our fault, we can at least be responsible for taking steps towards healing the best we can and breaking the cycle. Hope this helps in some way ❤🩹

Some people joke or make hitting children as something necessary for discipline. Some saying being hit til there were bruises or until they cried made them a stronger and better person. Those things get passed down in families. Sometimes hitting goes too far and in some situations parents get to take out their own frustrations and demons on their kids. I think people feel guilty saying their parents were wrong about some things.

Generational curses are so real and I didn’t realize what it was till now and I am 36 . There is a root to the behavior and we have to talk to our family to get to the root of it. So awesome to see that healing taking place 💛🙌🏼

Mama Mai looks beautiful. Love her headwrap & color choice. I appreciate her comic relief after a heavy session. Dr. Cyndie is such a supportive doctor 💜 Thank you ladies for being vulnerable & sharing your ghosts in the nursery. Hopefully this info will help many to try & heal from generational or personal trauma & break the pattern.

This is an amazing video!! Thank you for shedding light on this topic - generational trauma is real, especially in the Asian community. So authentic & real.

I always try to express myself to my mom of the feelings I had as a little girl and how it had affected me then and affects me now.... but all she does is say she doesn't want to talk about it and that I need to grow up and move on, she literally would hang the phone up if I brought up these "ghost in the nursery" (it has happened multiple times), I I wish we could hold a conversation like this.

I love mama Mai, but... it bothers me that whenever Jeanie talks about her sexual assault, she doesn't bat an eye, but when she talks about her abusive dad, she cries. Even Jeanie cries for her moms pain, but it's not reciprocated :/

I never comment on videos but I feel called to do so now because this spoke to my soul!! I see & hear so much of my grandma in your mom (my grandma came to America from Thailand w/ my grandpa back in the 60’s/70’s) and now that I’m on my journey to healing & breaking the cycle, having conversations like this w/ my grandma has been difficult due to the language/cultural barriers. All this is to say, PLEASE continue this series &/or continue shedding light on this sector of healing generational + cultural trauma for those of us dealing w/ something so specific yet convoluted as this. Thank you so much, JM for speaking your truth & sharing some of your/your moms story w/ us; I genuinely look forward to hearing & seeing more!

Listening to Mama Mai share her traumatic childhood is so heartbreaking. The fact that she’s willing to open to share and try to love and understand Jeannie through her own experiences shows so much courage and strength. We all make mistakes as parents and do the best we can based on what we know . Some times we hurt our kids even when we try to do better than what we had. These videos have helped me so much in understanding the generational trauma in my own family and inspires me to work through them too

That’s very brave that you brought up this in public with your mom. My parents are Vietnamese too and I don’t dare to talk back or explain myself them for anything.

I love seeing Mama mai and Jeannie speak on Breaking generational Curses 🥹 warms my heart so much because in my opinion, the Asian culture and Polynesian culture have so many similarities when it comes to our elders and honouring them no matter what, hiding our feelings, no matter how toxic your family can be you have to love them no matter what. I love you Jeannie 😩 AND mama mai of course 😌🖤 please do more videos like these! Is therapy for me in a way and also for my parents because I always play these videos on the TV for them to watch and hear too

Jeannie is an amazing woman, and I truly look up to her. Mama Mai's parenting was not perfect but she must have done something right, because Jeannie turned out great and so did Mama Mai even with her own childhood trauma's. Let's all do our best and not be afraid to show up with our scars.

This is wonderful to begin to open up these type of conversations. Just to clarify, Ghosts in the Nursery is a metaphor that comes from Selma Fraiberg (1975), who was a clinical social worker and psychoanalyst and it describes a parent’s own unresolved and even unremembered experiences from their own past thats impedes their capacity to give nurturing care to their own children. The disciple of Infant Mental Health is founded on these concepts and emphasizes recognizing the “ghosts” to help parents heal. The concept of “Angels in the Nursery” was later introduced by Alicia Lieberman (2005) to offer thats despite theses ghosts, there may have been positive and benevolent experiences of feeling loved and understood that could buffer the effects of the ghosts.

Love the honesty and authencity in this mother daughter relationship. Underneath all the hurt, pain and trauma...is LOVE. Deep unconditional love. I see two wounded souls through humility, readiness and willingness use respectful communication to understand and have compassion for each other. And in doing so, bring about true and lasting healing and transformation to their relationship.
