I did my first century ride over RAGBRAI 2022. I am 15 years old and I was on the road from 6:00 AM to about 4:30 PM. That day was 105 miles long with a 20 mph tailwind that admittedly helped a LOT but I still thought my time was pretty good, I even hit about 24 mph for a while 😁 I thought that my 10 and a half hours was good (more like 7 and a half if I don't count the breaks I took) but Jonathan's ride was just incredible!! @@december7403 best to not think of the speed, but rather the power. Watts is watts, regardless of the massive tailwind. There are heaps of WT pros who can do far more than 280W normalized power for three hours. I was skeptical when I heard the wind data, and the power data makes it clear this was more an exercise in aero optimization, route choice, and favorable winds as opposed to pure human physical achievement.

@beeble2003

Time trials are done on roads. Anybody who rides on the road is going to get some assistance from passing traffic. There's no way to avoid that, short of closing the road. However, you'll notice that he was riding towards the left of the lane, as far from that passing traffic as reasonably possible. There was somebody disqualified from a UK time trial not too long ago for riding almost on the dashed line to get as much draft from the passing traffic as possible.

I was happy to do in seconds under 6hrs on a Brompton in the 2019 Ride London 100 (although was aiming for half hour quicker than that). Know for sure I wouldn't be anything close to this time on any bike. Just extreme kudos on the route planning, aero position, timing, and just awesome effort. It's a shame Strava doesn't allow multiple kudos for these kind of efforts. Just incredible on open roads, regardless of the tailwind, and especially considering issues. And love that it re-iterates the beer-gut being more aero. And seriously lovely sounding guy with it!
