I just wanted to share that I’ve recently retired, Yay! I’m not ready to join a senior’s centre/club but we recently lost my mother and my father at 78 felt really lost without her. We suggested he visit his local senior’s club. He was welcomed with open arms. He joined yoga, pickle ball, morning exercises, plays cards in the afternoons, dancing, pot lucks, he has his lunch at the centre Monday to Friday. He loves it. He’s now 80 and still loving it. He’s an introvert, and is very happy he went, he’s made friends. There are several clubs in his area but starting at the smaller one helped him open up a whole new world, he now also takes classes and attends events from a bigger centre. If you are lonely please consider visiting a 55 + club/centre. My father is very happy, healthy and enjoys his life in a whole new way.

I am so happy to hear that your father is enjoying his activities and social time at the Senoirs centre. We lost my mom 2 years ago, and I tried to encourage my dad to go, but he only went once. He keeps active and has a few friends.

Be careful with that. My Dad lived at Leisure World in Silver Spring Maryland back in the late 1980's after our mother passed in 1987. He met this lady that was a complete forkin' NUTJOB! At one point she looked at my sister and I, both in our mid-twenties at the time, and exclaimed "MY BABIES!!!!" "Hey Dad, lose this psychojob weirdoff NOW!"

My mother died 8 years before my father. He was devastated and adrift until he found that the local community center hosted a weekly "widowed-persons support group". He joined and just being in that group turned him into a social animal (my mother had always joked, "If I go first your father's going to go become a hermit in the woods"!!). The group so enjoyed each others' company that when the center -- 2 or 3 years on -- told them the purpose of the group had run its course for them and they needed to use the space for another meeting, the group turned into a weekly lunch bunch which met for several more years. The irony to me is hearing all of the advice on avoiding loneliness in retirement strikes me as very much parallel to advice I've given my own children when they struggled with the transition to college. It's a similar change, and I told my daughter more than once -- "You've just got to keep putting yourself out there and trying new things until you find the people you click with!!" It's hard, but it only takes finding a small group of friends (or really even one or two) to turn it all around.

So happy to hear these encouraging stories. My dad is 90. He lost first my mother many years ago and just three weeks ago he lost his girlfriend with whom he has been for the last 22 years. He is devastated and feels so lonely. I am just waiting he passes the mourning period to see if I can interest him in joining a seniors club. He is quite healthy for his age, very social, has energy and has a clear mind. I pray he accepts to join a seniors club when he is ready.

I have a great inner life and guard my alone time. I value being by myself. Then I also work at a Home & Garden Gallery selling ladies fashion. I will be 70 on the 18th and have lived alone for 13 years. I have very good friends but don’t want to sit and wait on their doorstep. I prefer to a lot on my own as well. Inner life is very important because eventually people will start dying around you.

It can get lonely even if you are married. My husband has Parkinsons and goes to be very early every night. My evenings can be very lonely but I do research on line and chat with my son in Korea etc. I joined a bowling league that is so much fun. We have to look for things to do, even on our own.

It is wonderful that you are there for your husband. Parkinsons is difficult, and so many people think that the person has dementia because he/she has little facial expression, and so they ignore them. So be there for him, it may be lonely but I can assure you that when he is gone it can be more lonely, so good you have other activities and your son. I have been there with my parents.

I joined the senior centre near me a couple of weeks after I retired at age 61, primarily to join the seniors hiking club there. They hike mornings twice a week, it keeps me active and it's a social thing too. In the last 9 years hiking with the group I have discovered dozens of nature areas close to our house that I didn't even know existed and I have hiked the 900km Bruce Trail end to end with their more adventurous Bruce Trail sub-group (not all at once - it took 3 years to complete). That said for new retirees joining the senior's centre can be a difficult step to take. I know when I went there with my wife, who retired a couple of months after I did, she froze at the door and said "I can't do this". I get it, a few weeks ago you were a busy valued member of your work team and now you think you are heading into a place filled with people playing cards and using walkers. I convinced my wife to go in anyway and once inside she saw 3-4 people that she had worked with and already knew. In our case we find the senior's centre is filled with active and engaging people so don't hold back, give it a try.

As a retired nurse, I found that i love working with animals as a dog walker and sitter. I also feed cats while people are away. It can fit my schedule and I am home daily M-F by 1:30 PM. I may or may not do Hoildays....as I get older I know that I want to also spend time with family if they are available. I may not see the dog owners much as they are working and often from home, however, the dogs are wonderful and carefully screened for private walks.

In the UK there is an organisation called U3A (university of the 3rd age) run completely by volunteers, most towns and cities have one. It costs just £13 per year and has every interest you can think of represented by members using their skills to pass on to others, it can be anything from learning a language, flower arranging, music appreciation, hiking. I myself started a ukulele group and we have so much fun and have made such a lot of friends! Thank you Tina and Norm for highlighting this! ❤

Very good advice! I would also say to not ignore your long lasting friendships because not staying in contact leaves that other person feeling lonely and rejected. My mom is 88 years old and most of her friends have stopped calling or writing. She's almost deaf but still needs friends and has cried often because she doesn't understand why they have all stopped contacting or socializing with her 😢😢😢 It shouldn't always be one oerson trying to keep a relationship either. Do your part in the calling and arranging!

In the US, there is a Silver Sneakers program for senior citizens that is usually free through Medicare or your Medicare supplement. This gets you into many gyms free of charge and helps keep us active as we are on the road. We use it everywhere we travel in the states. We recently volunteered to be poll workers for elections in our county. (We travel too much to volunteer on a regular basis.) The training alone taught us so much about the process and we are looking forward to serving. We think every eligible voter should have the opportunity for this training. We were shocked to find that the process is very transparent and the security is unbelievably detailed.

I think the underlying message is that you have to make the effort to get out or reach out to people. Don't be discouraged if some people you reach out to don't want to be your friend. Just keep interacting with people and you will make friends. I knew an older lady and she would invite people for lunch at her home. She was a wonderful cook and people were always happy to have lunch with her. She didn't just invite people of her own age but all ages. It kept her life interesting.

It’s a learning curve to manage your own time after you’ve worked for others for decades. I think you don’t have to be busy or productive to be happy. If I can make a pot of coffee and get showered and dressed daily, everything else is a bonus. It’s a little lonely related to my age as so much of my family has passed; another learning process I guess. Thank you for today’s video.

Enjoyed this video! I got very lucky. At 72, when Covid hit, I got put on furlough. Six months later, when I was called back, I decided I’d had enough. It was a very busy job with lots of stress and lots of people. Suddenly, I was home and as things opened back up after lockdowns, I ventured out. Retirement complete..the forced alone time made it easier, I think. After years of “peopling”, this new life suits me. It is now 4 years since my forced full stop… and I think being eased back out into the world as restrictions lifted, it made it so much easier for me to adjust to retirement. I enjoyed your trip videos and the financial recap. Very interesting! Stay safe!💕

I agree, The Police are a great band and I saw them at the original Police Picnic in Oakville way back in 1981 but I would say they were a faux punk band and not really punk as Norm describes them. For sure The Police weren't anything like the Killing Joke punk band that was a support act at that same 1981 show. I think The Police only took on the punk persona because punk was the only thing exciting happening in music at the time so punk it was. I think it was more of a marketing thing, but true punk? A great band but certainly not in the same category as say The Clash or The Ramones. I liked them though and I have tickets to see Sting at Toronto Massey Hall in September.

To add to the list of volunteering possibilities, there are any number of arts organizations from museums to cinemas to playhouses and concert halls where volunteers are often the backbone of the organization. Not only do the volunteers get to mingle with others as greeters and ushers and the like, they also get access to the shows or exhibits for free and other perks.

I highly recommend volunteering too. I have been a museum volunteer for about 15 years. At 70 I am one of the youngest of a group of 200. We are on hiatus for a couple of years due to major renovations but still arrange to meet in small groups at each other’s homes once a month. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the right fit but so worth it when you finally do.

My Irish friends want me to move to Ireland but it's an expensive country to live in. Thinking either Portugal or the Dordogne region of France. Hi Tina and Norm. I saw (The Animals/The Fixx/and The Police) at the Miami Orange Bowl Stadium on October 28, 1983. I was a freshman in High School. Hubby utilizes both the gym and a pool membership. He runs with the over 55 crowd now. When you commit to working out/swimming, on a regular basis, "Showing up" is just as important as "Going." These are two different ideas. Showing up, means you go often, at your particular time slot, and others show up as well. If they see YOU, and you see THEM, it becomes "Well, I'd better show up" because if I don't someone might miss my presence. That goes for both the gym crowd and the pool crowd. Hubby usually does both, on alternate days, early in the day. And I get a nightly report at dinner about the "No Shows/and the SHOWS." Over time the "Showing up" will make you feel good about "Going." Because if you are committed and dedicated, YOU might spur others into "Dedication and Commitment," yes?? I can't get out, or walk too far, because of my medical situation right now. I am lucky if I can get out of bed in the morning. UGH !!

Great comments... also enjoyed that book DWZ. I think there is some advice from the book that is pertinent to the subject of loneliness in retirement. That would be in living your life more deliberately. A successful retirement requires lots of planning up front, of which most people focus on the finances. Like you both have done, you also need to take steps to combat isolating yourself in retirement. Relocating from the family home is one thing to consider, as well as some of the advice you've offered here in this video. It requires though, that you get off of 'auto-pilot' to help prevent it from happening. Lots to thing about - look forward to a book review! The title throws many people off, though as the saying goes... 'don't judge a book by its cover'! ;)

As always, a great video. We think one of the key strategies is to begin to volunteer whilst you are still working. We belong to our local Lions Club. The beauty of this is that there are no expectations for members to do more than they can fit into their current lifestyle. Because we both work during the week, we can currently only volunteer for the weekend activities, however as we move into part-time work, our plan is to do more within the club. In this way, we feel that the transition between full time work and retirement will be easier and we will already be set up with community connections. 😊😊😊

Happy Saturday Norm and Tina. One piece of advice I was given which I think is really solid is try and plan a vacation, whatever you can reasonably afford, that would begin as soon as you retire. So if you finish on a Friday your getaway would begin on the Monday. When you come home you can start your new phase of life having had a disconnection from workaday world.

Hi Norm and Tina: I play Table Tennis at a community center once a week. The gym is five mornings a week usually after walking the dog. Swimming, stretching, steam room and camaraderie with lots of retirees and others the last 12 years. Gardening/pool boy work coming up with the warm weather. Travelling, photography and mega concerts/Stratford. We saw Andrea Bocelli last week! Kitchener Blues Festival line-up party at the Edelweiss Tavern tonight! Have a great weekend. Cheers😊 🎉

I'm with you on that, I can totally relate. I retired a few months ago and I'm finding it difficult to find a balance of being on my own and being with others. I have decided to try out a social group at a church (I am not religious and there is no expectation to be so) but told myself I don't have to continue if it doesn't suit me. I'm trying to see retirement as an opportunity to discover new things. All the best.

We don't have a senior center here, but our public library is a fantastic local resource for us. As far as keeping active is concerned, we are lucky to live next door (literally since we share a property line) with a national park. We walk in the park nearly every day. In summer we also enjoy sailing our boat. My on line activities center around my KZbin channel and the other KZbinrs I follow. I find that making KZbin videos gets me out of the house and keeps my mind active via planning, shooting and editing the videos.

We have an annual travel medical plan that we bought through our Bank of Montreal MasterCard called Total Travel And Medical Protection, this plan we bought a long time ago and so we are grandfathered into the original plan, giving us 31 days on any one trip. We top up through TD Insurance, we call their 800 number and ask for a top up, they quote us over the phone. This is how we got coverage for our 78 day trip to Portugal this year. Hope this helps.

I'm looking forward to loneliness in my retirement. If I do travel, and with increasing climate restrictions, this will be more, more difficult to do, I want to travel alone, while we're still permitted to travel without an internal US travel passport. Once the restrictions are imposed, I want to join Alliance Francais. Odd you mentioned morning coffee at McDonald's. That's one of my dreams. Better than taking coffee with Hyacinth Bucket, oh poor Elizabeth! A Hyacinth free coffee. My McDonald's is within the 15 minutes restrictions that are being planned for urban areas.

Great video. I have been retired for two years . Stopped working at 61 due to back problems from an accident I had 35 years ago .besides getting used to my limitations I also have my aging Mother and my wifes aging parents with many health problems and waiting for LTC to deal with. It has been difficult to keep up with friendships and to have time for ourselves when having to manage three households. Photography has always been a hobby of mine and for the past year have been making more time for my hobby .now trying to pick a stock photo site to upload and sell some images ( any suggestions ) .also looking to re-join a photo club. It was a rocky start to retirement but it’s slowly getting better.
