Breaking up with my Not so great Winspace Hyper wheels

Here is the final video about my Winspace Hypers. I believe my wheelset is defective based on tests and other users experience with them. I still think these are good wheels, based on all the feedback I got from my previous videos about the Hypers, as long as your set isn't defective.

I service alot of these hypers. They tend to be a bit draggier than the usual wheel but the difference in drag is not gonna slow you down at all. I do note that the ceramic bearings are not the best and often changing the bearings to quality ones with better quality/tolerances often result in a very smooth wheelset. I also note that the stock hypers are a bit undergreased from the factory.

The Vision wheels have a higher kinetic energy value to them which is why they spin longer than the Hyper wheels. Which is to say that since the Vision wheels are heavier (ie a body in motion wants to stay in motion) they will stay in motion longer than the lighter Hyper wheels.

These sort of spin tests can be affected by grease viscosity. The visions may have a thinner grease or the grease has melted away from contact surfaces. Not saying this is it. But what i can say is different grease affects the spin tests. If you use thin oil it will spin more. But then you don't get the same bearing protection or you need to oil more often. Maybe a possible variation in the results explained.

The heavier wheels will spin longer. It could also be where the weight is. I had two sets of stock wheels, but one was an earlier version with fatter spoke and narrower internal. It also had J bend spokes vs the straight pull on the newer version. I did a spin like that and the first version kept on spinning.

I have a pair of Hyper 50’s. I run Conti 5000s with latex tubes at 70-80psi on my Sworks Tarmac. Really fast and really comfortable, comfort I attribute to the latex tubes at lower pressures than most would use. I did the spin test on the front wheel after I noticed how easily the wheel spun while in the work stand. It spun for 7 minutes, I’ve a video as proof. The valve also will always find it’s way to bottom dead centre after what seems like rocking back and forth for ever. I paid £700 for the pair after using a discount code. For me they have been excellent value when faced with upwards of £1500 -£2000 for established brands. That’s my 10 cents 😊

Damien..i(just in case you don t know and for your own safety) : If your wheels are rim brake type I would advice to change your latex tubes for butyl ones. Latex tubes overheat a lot in long descents and wouldn t resist to a long descent like Col de Croix de fer or Glandon in summer

I'm having the same problem with my Hyper 50 disc wheels after I ridden it for the first time mid ride through a rain. After that when I gave my front wheel a spin, it started to make bird chirping sounds and no longer spinning smoothly. Sent the wheels to my local bike shop who sells Hyper wheels and they changed the bearings. All good until I had to ride in a rain again and the same issue recurred. Huge let down as I've been enjoying my ride on the Hypers as this is my first carbon wheelset and most of my ride buddies also running Hypers without any issues. I bought the wheelset directly from Winspace, contacted them about this and hopefully the issues can be resolved.

Thanks for doing another honest review, as much as you/we can expect without getting in a lab. Tbh it's real world that matters. The so called butterfly weave looks awful in my opinion up close, with all those resin marks of green and brown, just like mine were. I don't care if it's because they're not painted it doesn't look professional for $1k and it's a cost manufacturers saving excercise not weight saving!

That sucks man. I've got 38mm, no issues with mine after 5k. Mine are disc break, my front spins almost all the way back up if I put the stem at the top. I think you got a bad pair. I saw you got visions. Another cool company is Yoeleo. I got a pair for my gravel bike, very nice with good customer service. Good vid, I think it will help winspace stay on point with quality as they expand. If winspace is watching this, I hope you send this guy a pair to check out. You can’t tell quality of bearings just by feel unless completely shot- the quality of bearings can really be improved by skf or ntn bearings

They perform just as well an any other carbon wheels I’ve had. I would say there supplied pads felt better than other pads i tired.

I got a new hyper 50 wheelset. First couple rides in, I noticed my rotor hitting the pads when swaying the bike left to right. I felt a few faint, likely a micron of play if I moved the wheel side to side. Contacted winspace and they mentioned it's bearings. They offered me some cheap Amazon ceramic bearings worth about 20-30 bucks, but I told them that I'll buy quality bearings, so I went to boca bearings and got some premium ones. After replacing them, first few rides, seemed like it fixed the problem, but now the front rotor is doing the same thing but no play, so I'm starting to suspect that there is some play inside the hub itself. I'll be reaching out to winspace soon.

Performance of ceramic bearings is one of the most hyped up thing in cycling. Cheap ceramic bearings on top of that not only doesn't improve performance in anyway but also hurts it as seen in this example. All those Winspace wheels that don't have the problems you're having right now will run into the same issues. Just give it a few rainy rides.

I don't see a point of having a ceramic bottom bracket if all your other drivetrain bearing are regular. Also ceramic makes sence if you are racing and every watt counts, and if your sponsored to pay for it all 😂

I also wonder if it's a tolerance issue. I think I remember hearing that these wheels rely on the tension from the quick release to set the bearing preload. They don't have any other adjustment like you find on other hub designs.

I came to ask this. Everyone wheel I've got has twin nits to set the tension on the bearings. The skewer tension effects this preload too. I install the wheel, then push the rim exactly where 1 brake pad touches. If the rim has slop coming from the bearings then I tighten the nuts till the wheel has no free play. You have to lock the jamnut up while installed, then re tension the skewer. I've had many wheels that won't spin freely while having zero bearing slop. Some wheels like my mavics spin for minutes with no slop. Some wheels I've had to accept some slop to allow freespin (if it was disc brake it would've rubbed pads constantly. You should be able to diagnose yours just by loosening the skewers. There will be a crush tube in between the 2 wheel bearings, it sounds like your tube is just a bit too short, were talking 0.05-0.1mm. Enough to drag the bearings. Either way, not letting you adjust bearing preload is a shite design to save 15 grams and use less components/threads.

Just curious if you had given any consideration to the types of seals used in the particular wheel bearings. I've noticed different spin rates on several wheelsets over the years. In some cases the free-spin was affected by the types of seals used. Looser seals seem to allow better spin but more suspetability to contamination, tighter seals protect the bearing but have more friction. I'm for sure no expert on bearings! I've got two wheelsets I currently run. A set of Bontrager RSL-37s and a Set of Caden. (DeCadence model) The Decadence actually spin slightly better than the Bontragers. However, for some reason I do prefer the Bontragers.

Good point, I do feel the resistance could have something to do with tighter seals. Due to the windspace wheels having ceramic bearings the seals might just be designed tighter to help prevent contamination as ceramics are more susceptible to damage and wear in foul weather. Interesting if windspace could comment on this.

Well for standard deep groove BB the seals are responsible for most of the friction. If you took even a cheap no name steel bearing, removed the seals and replaced the grease with oil these boys would spin with super low friction. They just aren't durable. I would recommend standard bearing from big brands with non contact seals, like NSK VV. Every reputable bearing manufacturer has a non contact seal option for most of their standard bearings. They are relativeley cheap, at below 10 bucks and I would say they are better than most stuff you get shipped with wheels, especially in the long run

Loosen quick release on hypers and try spin test. Cheap ceramic bearings , under pressure the races deform thus more friction. Solution is replace bearings with good quality ones.

Spin test sadly will prove nothing. Both wheels weigh differently so that’s inconclusive (Visions look like 30’s & your Hypers look like 50’s). Plus different viscosity in grease/oils affect that as well. Plus bearings (makeup, tolerances, etc) affect all that. And your rear wheel has a torque meter or something of the sort & that distorts rotation. Simple problem causing all this is that some wheels get sent out the factory with more grease than others. Then initial break in when a riders puts them on their bike sorta sets the foreground for how they perform going forward. Send it back & get the same design but a new set.

Interesting video, thanks! I had very bad luck with ceramics bearings in the rear derailleur. They were fine about 200 kilometers and then busted. They were with bad seals. This is not the case in here though. You can have the best of the best until water gets in :-)

For $1100 dlls wheel set you can replace the bearings with 200 dlls an have a 1300 dlls wheels set that spin like a 2500 dlls I don't see the issue

I love my hypers, got 10000km on them now. Didn’t do a single hub ore bearing service and they are rolling like crazy! Spin Test goes for like 5 minutes 😂 sad that you obviously got a defect one. Mine are the best wheels I ever had.

Just purchased Windspace Hyper 65 for my tri bike. Have been running Alto for the past 4 seasons. The altos spin more freely, but replaced the bearings with Kogel. After about 1000 mile on the windspace I will replace with Kogel. My first few rides, my impression was they clime better than alto, seems the same on flats. My Roval 321 disk spins like shit, replaced the bearing and spines similar to the windspace. In tests keeping power with in a few watts.. the hyper runs equal to alto front and Roval rear. With less than 100 miles on the Hyper, I feel the bearings are not great and need more time to break in the wheels.

could be the seals or too much preload, the end caps that snap on could be pressing on the seals/bearings. i like the end caps that screw on cuz you can keep them looser and the quick release wont effect preload. would be interesting if you undid the quick release.

It could be the quality of the bearings, I’ve had skateboard bearings that feel nice when spinning them by hand, as soon as there’s weight on them they just hold no speed, hunt down some good quality bearings and see if that helps

I also bought winspace hypers 50mm on the November on 2020 and they came around early December. You should replace the bearing. Why am i saying that? because when i was cleaning my bike and i had it upside down, the wheel started to rotate from the valve being on the top, and it did not stop until i stopped it. So i think you should change bearings. It is sad that some products come flawed. Shit happens. i also had a bad experience with carbon wheels, which where custom made and they were actually built badly so i changed them with the hypers, so i understand the frustration. However, hypers are exceptional on my bike, i have many miles, and races, and wins with them.

It's not a fair riview! You can't judge the wheels just by the quality of the bearings. I've got Vision Trimax Carbon 45 and just after few rides had the problem with the freehub bearings. I replaced them with the better quality ones, greased them properly and now the wheels are perfect. Even the big brands initially install lower quality bearings.

nothing to criticize about your disappointment, just something about your bearing "test". If you can feel the "slowing effect" of your bearings from what I see here, you're a super sensible guy... Up a climb I discovered that my bearings were completely seized and it cost me around 5w for the climb, seem that yours is not that bad so you can really feel it

It took me a few months to finally admit to myself I may have just wasted a lot of money. Thankfully for most other Hyper users this isn't the case and I guess mine are from a defective batch or something.

its just the design of wheels but also ceramic bearings notoriously degrade faster than steel. But, overall as I see it, that will not slow you down. The current set up of your stem will definitely slow you down - slam it!

I really hope Winspace sends you another wheelset…I’m not an expert, but I can see something is not quite right with yours. At the $1k price point, getting anywhere close to my DT Swiss 1400s on my BMC RdMachine is a win for me…I am very happy. My light spin results were a “somewhat” better than yours…so definitely Winspace should look into this at their expense, especially to improve the product, if it means reengineering.

Rear wheel spinning duration is not a problem with bearings. Have a poor freehub driver (ratchet ring, pawls and springs) design is the cause of having high resistance. Bearings are not your issue.

I wish I would have watched your review before buying. My spokes came unthreaded after every ride. My LBS initially rebuilt the wheels and it happened again the next ride.Then winspace rebuilt the wheels and it happened again. By the way I rode the rims 3x and each time the spokes came loose. Garbage rims. Winspace DOES NOT refund all of your money when returned so be VERY careful to anyone looking at buying winspace HYPER wheels.

I sent them back and got my money back, used the money to get a set of brand new Vision Metron 55sl, world tour used and proven, for basically the same price. Bike feels and performs so much better. Plus if i ever need replacement parts for the Vision there are tons of sites/dealers who carry them, unlike waiting weeks for parts from China...

If you have sealant in the wheels, it will slow them down dramatically. Spin a wheel with sealant, and without. I think your Winspace wheels were fine.

Both had the same amount of sealant. Both wheels had just been serviced. Wheels are gone and I cant be happier!

Wasn`t It said many times, that spin test without load means nothnig? Tight bearings properly greased or just new can look bad when spinning freely but under load might be faster and stiffer and lose less energy. Anyway 80% of bearings resistance are just sealings and i prefer to have better sealings and lose 0,2W per wheel but have them bulletproof ;-). Just dont look at spin test becouse under load this ressistance values are irrelevant. Want to check performance go do outside test uphill/ flat etc. Funny thing and bad sametime Is when manufacturer sacrafice quality of sealings becouse want to pleasure people at their spin test. Also being said Hypers has less kinetic energy and way lighter spokes which make them easier to spin but harder to keep that spin ;-).

Thanks for watching and commenting. I did test these hypers vs some other wheels and hypers are the slowest of them all. I’m sure mine are a defective set.

@@daihat I sent them back and got my money back. I replaced them with Vision metron 55sl wheelset! Major upgrade!

Looks like the wheels is not balanced. Heavier on the valves side that’s all .

Im grateful that i didnt buy that .like they say if its good to be true than its not true. I prefer slr 1 wheels..its much better

Nope, tires are great. I actually tried some vision KOM’s (30mm deep) wheels with same tires and there were faster downhill, uphill and flats. Hypers are 👎🏼

You're comparing two totally different wheel depth with most likely varying grease viscosity. Must be desperate for clicks lol

Think what you like buddy, fact is my hyper wheels are defective and I sent them back. Both wheels hubs/bearing were serviced before this test so I guess I can’t please everyone on KZbin 🤣
