In my rewatch, Walt’s massive ego has really struck me in a way it didn’t the first time I watched it. Dude is literally incapable of giving an inch even if it would benefit him. Totally unreasonable in the worst sort of way. Literally from episode 1 it’s so clear his ego is gonna be what does him in.

silly comment. nope. Jimmy definitely cares what people think about him. Chuck and Kim are the easy examples but he even cares what Huell thinks about him. in Season 6 of BCS, when Huell asks “why do you do all this?”, he comes up with that answer because he cares what Huell thinks of him. he doesn’t want Huell seeing him as a bad guy. I’d say he even cares what Francesca thinks about him too. in BCS, we see multiple scenes where he’s friendly towards her and seems to view the two of them as friends and then his feelings are immediately hurt when she reminds him she’s not his friend and just his employee.

The same thing happens with Mike. Throughout Breaking Bad, Walt looked down on Mike as a common thug, despite his obvious competence and intelligence, because Walt had some serious issues with conventionally masculine "Alpha Male" figures like Hank, who possessed all this "practical, real-world" knowledge they could use in everyday life to impress those around them, while Walt languished in academic Hell teaching Wikipedia-level basics to bored children. Walt can't accept that Mike is both tough AND intelligent, so he brushes off this complex, fascinating character as "Generic Thug." Same with Saul: Intelligent guy with tons to offer, reduced in Walt's mind to "sleazy lawyer with no soul that's always been this one-dimensional."

@@treacle4617 the man went into this risky life for his family initially. People always ignore this. He did this at first for them. He didn't know he'd be the best at it and then end up doing it all for himself. The reason it gets to this point and affects his ego is, look at how he's treated in his own home by his son and wife. Most people do not like charity. Most people want to make for themselves. He has his masculinity stripped from him a lot of the time from all points. I like the genius in the show for this reason.... No one actually cares about the man's struggle. Treating people how they shouldnt pushes them. I doubt any of you in this chat disrespects and fights down your friends and family. If you do however then I understand the lack of awareness. Trust me on this. Also I'm not doing this aggressively. Just having a conversation with fellow series lovers.

Walter not wanting it to seem like charity saved his family is understandable. I know the guy is an egomaniac, but it does make sense. He's been an over-educated loser his whole life, that's how he feels, he's seen as this milquetoast, non-threatening nobody who'll just fade away from cancer and leave his family impoverished and heavily indebted. It makes complete sense that *he* wants to be seen as the one who provided for his family before passing on. The one who, despite a lukewarm under-achieving life, came through in the end bigly for those who relied on him, and that's his legacy and how he's remembered.
