I recently have an experience I cannot explain. I am 41 years old and was a TOTAL skeptic. I wouldn’t say atheist-but agnostic, leaning atheist. I am a very clean, ordinary professional. I wasn’t seeking anything. At all. Then, one day, out of nowhere, I had a real encounter with God. And when I say real, I mean real. I was initially terrified and thought I had experienced psychosis or something. But now I am positive, more certain than I have ever been about anything, that God is real. I still cannot even believe that these words are coming from me. Anyway, I am now diving deep and trying to make sense of all of this. I actually want to find Jesus now, which, again, I cannot even believe is something I am saying. I have been going in spirals with questioning why Jesus had to die for our sins. This video was incredibly helpful. Thank you.

I had a realization not long ago. Jesus says that he could have called legions of angels to deliver him. What I realized was that he could have, and would have been right to do so! And yet still chose not to. It's not a matter of power. Nor is it simply a matter of justice. It is a matter of love. Jesus had the power to save himself. He had the right to save himself. Well, no theory but experience: what can i do so that God would not love me anymore? All the other religions: not obey or follow the rules (sounded to me like selfsatisfied gods and i an uncomplete being with no chance). Christianity: He makes the first step and comes. He heals broken lifes He was killed, denied, tortured, betrayed,... by broken lifes He though came back to us. So what can i do to lose His love? Nothing. Therefore i trust my God, i, the former fighting atheist who led peolpe away from church by arguments, who met God, so i could not deny His existence anymore, but was not able to trust His love completely- until i realized that Jesus and this God i experienced are one.

@@3x0t1c3 he doesn’t send you to hell... let me explain. Hell was made for satan and his angels cause they betrayed God. Adam and Eve ate the fruit of knowing right and wrong and unlocked the ability to sin. This led to humans going down a road to sinning. The plan was for humans to chill with God but Satan tempted Eve and she fell for it messing it up for everybody which is why we needed Jesus to reconnect us to God. So basically now it’s up to us to goto heaven or hell, you can’t blame God

Hey, I had actually wondered this a while back to and stumbled upon an explanation that both made sense to me and satisfied this issue. Heaven is not a place, hell is not a place, purgatory is not a place-at least, not how we imagine places. They’re more like states of being. It makes even more sense when you consider that God is the source of all goodness in our world. Heaven is full unification to God, a state where one fully accepts Him as well as His plans, promises, and commands. Purgatory is our state of struggle, where we desire to reach this full compliance and unity, but still have sins trapping us. Hell is the complete separation from God brought about by the unyielding rejection of Himself, His existence, or His commands. Because God is what we see as Goodness, it makes sense that heaven is this perfect and wonderful life if Heaven is just unity with God-with Goodness itself. And by default, it makes sense that the absence of such Goodness is what creates the horrible idea of hell that we have. So in essence, God doesn’t send us away; He welcomes us with open arms. But it is we that rejected that existence. Think of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The son had to choose to return to his father, and yet, when he did, the father welcomed him with joy and love.

The God doesn't ask you nor expect you to be perfect since it's unfair for It was He who has made you imperfect to begin with. The God asks you to try as hard as you can to be perfect. If you fail, it's ok as long as you don't give up. You ask for forgiveness and try again, and all is good again. You say that we're all God's children and He's our father in heaven and that's exactly what's expected of a father to do raising his children to be the best they can for their own good not his own. That's the opposite of what the god of the bible is. He's a vengeful father who asks for blood to wipe out sin that's caused by his plane to begin with. That's not so fatherly of him. And what doesn't make since at all is that he is to sacrifice his only "begotten", in the most horrendous and humiliating way, to be able to forgive his other children for sins they were created and prone to do.

What love of God do you speak, there is no love of God, there can't. For God so loved the world that he created a place of eternal torment. I believe you could not send people you love to hell. It would crush your heart and destroy your soul. Just before Noah's flood, who were the people God loved? The answer is no one. Noah was chosen because he was perfect in all his generations, not because God loved him.

God in the Old Testament is one with no partners so was he lying to all the previous prophet that he is one ? Why on earth God would die for the rules he made ? However , I would have to agree with you that Paul is brilliant by fooling you thinking Jesus died for your sins . Why on earth God send prophets throughout history to all nations to warn them of the rules and advise them to follow them if they want to go to heaven but then he would become a man himself and die for the rules he made in the first place . Well you have to remember how back in the Old Testament (especially in Leviticus), animals were sacrificed for atonement for sins because they were seen as without sin (in the place of those with sin). So Christ's atonement for sin didn't suddenly come out of nowhere, but it was foreshadowed since the time of the Israelites. Jesus, being sinless Himself, was the fulfillment of all those atonement sacrifices ("For I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it." -Matthew 5:17). Also, Christians tend to put SOOO much emphasis on the death of Jesus, but not NEARLY enough on His Resurrection. I'm no professional theologian so correct me if I'm wrong, but if Jesus just died and there wasn't any resurrection, we wouldn't have a Mediator between God and Man. The gates to heaven wouldn't be open for us. Without Jesus's Resurrection, I don't think Christianity or the Church would even exist. Yes, the death of Jesus is crucial to His mission, and heartbreaking as well. But the death of Jesus would hardly have any meaning at all UNLESS the Resurrection took place (further proving that He's the Son of God and not just another prophet). So it's not just His death we need to remember, but it's His death AND Resurrection together. (Again, I'm a flawed human and no professional theologian, so if there's error in anything I say, please correct me.)
@thecannibalrobot
@thecannibalrobot Жыл бұрын
You are very close to Eastern Orthodox thinking on the atonement here. Just one note: The killing of the sacrificial lamb isn’t what cleansed the people and the temple of sin. The blood extracted from the lamb and used to wipe down the Holy of Holies is what accomplished this. The killing was merely incidental, a practical prerequisite to obtaining the blood. After all, there are countless passages in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers detailing how the animal should be used after its death for the cleansing of sin, but not a single passage prescribing *how* the animal should be killed. Moreover, it is always required the animal then be eaten communally. Consider this when contemplating the Eucharist.

But what I most appreciated was his acknowledgment that the causal relationship between atonement and the crucifixion is ultimately a mystery and therefore cannot be fully explained to or grasped by those of us who are not Christians

Your videos are such a breath of fresh air: upbeat, eloquent, insightful, learned, relevant... and the list can go on. Most importantly, you impress me as a person of integrity, kindness, and an open and generous heart who also has the courage to speak up (constructively) about the shortcomings of the church and the sticky issues of the doctrine. I am glad you pointed out the difficulty with putting together the various theories of salvation proposed throughout the centuries by brilliant minds. I would want to probe the question of incoherence further though: why didn't perfectly good and all-powerful God ensure that Scripture and Tradition offer a unified , clear, and cogent answer to this all-important question? Because these different soteriologies seem to entail different portrayals of God and implications for Christian practice, God seems to be indictable for failing to guide and unify the church or at least to explain why there should be such a confusion. Is it enough simply to appeal to mystery here?

There are so many mysteries to our Faith, so many interpretations of those mysteries. At some point, there is a very real truth that we must come face to face with… God is not human, his ways are indeed higher than ours. And I for one find that immeasurably comforting and encouraging.

Fr. Casey, as a baptized Roman Catholic, I marvel at your complete confidence in the explanation given in this video, it smells of "drummed in - indoctrinated" theology and quite precise & coldly to the point. This is not meant to be critical at all - "just that all this exact rhetoric" makes no sense at all. We, mankind are created by God in the millions, and without knowing or agreeing are cast into this world which has obstacles galore. We are having to navigate our way through thick & thin but also pleasantness from time to time. We are told, we are here to serve our Creator (*and i do believe we were created for a specific reason- else what is the point*) without even agreeing to be created and in many instances live a miserable life. We try to follow the difficult rules imposed upon us, and when we fail to do so, we are cast into the fires of hades for eternity. *Jesus Christ is then sent by His partners (THE TRIO) to suffer despicable cruelty by mankind & eventually sheds His broken blood-stained body to save us from eternal damnation. This is all so crazy Father Casey that we should without our knowledge & permission be created to suffer on this earth field, then judged & discarded & for eternity suffer again???? THIS IS PUT TO YOU IN BASIC LANGUAGE AND AN ANSWER IN BASIC LANGUAGE AND TRUTH IS REQUIRED. **What a strange story! Do you wonder why there are non- believers & atheists and confusion amongst those like myself who realize/know there's a Creator but fail to really understand why we were created.

My personal opinion, not read anywhere, just what I think: we really had to pay a "debt" to the Father, because God is fair and humanity is a mess. But God could have just forgiven us in any other way: because He's omnipotent and because He loves us. However, He chose to pay the debt to show our sins are serious. They make others and ourselves suffer. By suffering a cruel death, Jesus pays the debt instead of just forgeting about it. We can remember it in temptation----that sin is serious, it's harmful. Also when we suffer ourselves and have to serve and forgive others. Also, I like the incarnational view as the answer to natural evil: some people have to live or die with cruel illnesses, there are natural dissasters... and God, who is so good and powerful, never told us why! Maybe we're too small to understand: after all, it's God Who has an infinite intelligence, not us. But He came down, enjoyed our joys and suffered our pains, and finally died a terrible death. It's like saying: "I can't explain, because you can't understand. But see, all your pain and your fear matter: I go through them with you".

Hi Noah, The way the Church explains the relationship between the two passages is in the Sacrifice of the Eucharist. The Council of Trent put it like this: "Jesus, our God and Lord, though He was about to offer Himself once on the altar of the cross unto God the Father, by means of his death, there to operate an eternal redemption; nevertheless, because that His priesthood was not to be ended by His death, in the last supper, on the night in which He was betrayed,-that He might leave, to His own beloved Spouse the Church, a visible sacrifice, such as the nature of man requires, whereby that violent sacrifice, once to be accomplished on the cross, might be re-presented, and the memory thereof remain even unto the end of the world, and its saving virtue be applied to the remission of those sins which we daily commit,-declaring Himself constituted a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech, He offered up to God the Father His own body and blood under the species of bread and wine; and, under the symbols of those same things, He delivered (His own body and blood) to be received by His apostles, whom He then constituted priests of the New Covenant; and by those words, Do this in commemoration of me, He commanded them and their successors in the priesthood, to offer (them); even as the Catholic Church has always understood and taught. For, having celebrated the ancient Passover, which the multitude of the children of Israel immolated in memory of their going out of Egypt, He instituted the new Passover, (to wit) Himself to be immolated, under visible signs, by the Church through (the ministry of) priests, in memory of His own passage from this world unto the Father, when by the pouring out of His own blood He redeemed us, and delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into his kingdom. And this is indeed that clean oblation, which cannot be defiled by any unworthiness, or malice of those that offer (it); which the Lord foretold by Malachi was to be offered in every place, clean to his name, which was to be great amongst the Gentiles; and which the apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthians, has not obscurely indicated, when he says, that they who are defiled by the participation of the table of devils, cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord; by the table, meaning in both places the altar. This, in fine, is that oblation which was prefigured by various types of sacrifices, during the period of nature, and of the law; in as much as it comprises all the good things signified by those sacrifices, as being the consummation and perfection of them all." (Session 22, Chapter 1) The violent offering of the Messiah's life happened once for all. But, in this Sacrifice of the Eucharist, He makes this offering present to us in an unviolent way. He claimed in John 2 and other places to actually BE the New Temple. And it is around the daily, unviolent Sacrifice of His Body and Blood that we see the fulfillment of the offerings of the New Temple. (And as the Council of Trent noted, it actually also has some roots in the Passover celebration of our people [I am ethnically Jewish]: the Exodus happened once. But, in the Seder, in some "sacramental" way WE are set free from Egyptian slavery)

Without endorsing some dualistic nature of creation (flesh versus spirit) Saint Paul explains how the flesh will get sanctified, being Jesus the first one whose "matter" (human flesh) has been sanctified. As we all know, we die, and our "matter" falls apart, our body doesn't go straight to heaven but gets buried. Living life as did Jesus however, has a positive effect on the matter that we (and all earthly things) exist of. We can offer help in the sanctification of matter. In that way "the animal" inside of us gets slaughtered, bit by bit, with the help of the Holy Spirit. Indeed Catholics regard Jesus to be the third temple, and John, in his Gospel, wrote down the words of Jesus: He will be in us, and we will be in him. That's how I understand how "the animal" nature will disappear, or how matter will be restored, for also creation (the whole non-human world) longs for salvation. This is how I do interpret this, seeing no contradiction in what you said. I hope my words are no heresy!

The way I understand it, is that Christ definitively defeats sin and death for each one of us IF we follow Him. It’s an internal experience that is personal for each of us. That’s why even Jesus prayed “thy kingdom come”. The outside world will allways be a work in progress. I’m sure they will call me a heretic, I don’t care. That’s the way it makes sense to me.

sin is the turning away from God to some created thing the atonement by christ undoes this now man can truly turn away from sin(created things) and return to God by the merits of christ death has been undone firstly by restoring life to the soul of the faithful but more importantly the resurrection of the dead has been merited by christ, all men shall rise on the last day physically immortal

The short answer which will only be stated in the last part of the video is this: it's a mystery. To a believer, this term is always used for something that can't be explained. To a non-believer, this is just senselessness. But anyway, kudos to the presenter! His articulations are always clear! :-)

I think Incarnational theories can have a substitutionary aspect conquering death and sin is our job as humans and it is our responsibility, yet Christ volunteers and gains victory for us

Applause and congratulations and thanks Father I am passionate about this question. Its the first time I find a balanced presentation of interpretations while maintaining mystery. Please note that Christ also delivers from non-sense suffering, as we can offer our suffering in communion with his passion.

Ezekiel 18:20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

Watching (and truly listening to) your videos is much like going to an excellent retreat--and this past week has been a moving and enlightening experience for me--one that has truly renewed my belief in the Catholic Church--as imperfect as it is. You capture in a few minutes the essence and heart of theological concepts that are hard for most Christians (let alone Catholics) to grasp. May your ministry continue to grow and prosper (in a spiritual sense as well as a financial one). One topic I cannot find if you have covered yet is one of the most mysterious to me: the nature of the Trinity. Many have tried to explain it, but very few (at least based on my searches) have managed to do so without getting stuck in some kind of endless loop. Do you suppose you could give it a go?

23 But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [d]grain. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am [e]lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die. The incarnational resonates most with me and seems the most complete. He entered into our suffering not to take it away, but to give it power and credence thereby charting a new path to salvation. Given that Jesus is GOD the appeasement through suffering position doesn't seem to fit for me. I see it more as him being a God so loving that he was willing to be subjected to brutality by his own creation JUST so we could understand the depths of his love. When I think about it, the original sin that set us off on this rollercoaster was not loving God. Despite living in a literal PARADISE with every perceivable joy and comfort, we still doubted God's love for us. I don't think the above is at odds with position that what Jesus did was definitely a pure and perfect sacrifice or substitution but I think it's one entered into, to break the bonds of sin and death which only a blemishless soul could do as you described. That said, he unequivocally dispelled also, the original lie that God does not love us and that's why he also stressed that the most important commandment is to love God with everything that is in you. This is why I sincerely struggle to be reconciled to the idea that God is delighted or satiated by suffering and brutality when he never wanted it to be a thing.

Hmmm 🤔. All the above considered, there is also the aspect of death and suffering being necessary consequences that flow from sin. Not desired, but necessary

I like the end part! And perhaps it is the best theory! The mystery behind the whys and hows of atonement makes us love God more. We feel safe knowing he is there for us always. The we will be resurrected just like Jesus. We might not understand but we believe, this is the true essence of faith!

Fr Casey, I always tried to make some sense out of different explanations on the topic of salvation and how It happens. However, I never truly and conceptually differentiated these salvational processes. With this video, though, I have a perfect starting point to study and deepen my understanding of the subject. Your work is increadibly important to blow new life and freshness to the way we see and experience Christ in times of poor Cathecism and value emptiness.

I forgot where I read it, but I also remember a more mystical side of the salvation which is often overlooked as it is more abstract. The theory stated that since Jesus was truly void of sin, his body siphoned all of humanity's sin: past, present and future. With all those sins contained in His body, He brought them along with him to be beaten, crucified and killed. So that when He died, the sins died with Him. But when He was resurrected, the sins did not resurrect with Him as this newly resurrected body was divine in nature. This theory is also not without biblical basis. In the old testament, the Israelites "transferred" their sins into a scapegoat and sent it away to the dessert (Leveticus 16:10). So that when it dies (or as "perceived" by the ancient Israelites to be "taken by Azazel"), it dies along with their sins. So if the body of a single animal can carry the sins of one villages at one point in time, it only makes sense that the body of the Son of God can carry the sins of all people at all points in time. Hence the famous verse "He who was without sin became sin itself for our sake (2 corinthians 5:21)" This may be grouped under the "Substituitional" umbrella in this video. It's just that this particukar theory wasn't mentioned and I believed this my whole life. Just wanted to have someone clarify to me whether this is a valid belief or not.
