Often as Christians, we put the Old Testament in our periphery, deemphasizing its importance. The Gospel of Matthew invites to see the connective tissue between the Old and New Testaments, and how we cannot balkanize our understanding of scripture.

You really touch at a core issue of the Gospel of Matthew and its targetting of the Jewish people. It is a primary reason for Jewish persecution at the hands of the Church for centuries. Ultimately leading to the Holocaust. Father, if your goal is to enlighten people of these core theological principles, it is paramount you discuss the shortcomings as well.

Matthew's gospel is providing a perfect example of how missionary work is supposed to be done. It makes all sorts of connections to the beliefs of the people it is preaching to (references to Jewish law and the prophets), while at the same time challenging them for failing to recognize the God who has always lived in their midst. We need to build bridges across cultures and reach people where they are at, but the gospel message is still supposed to be difficult to accept.

Before becoming Catholic, I was in plenty of arguments of "Paul's gospel vs. Jesus' gospel" which is wild to consider the implications of. Reducing the arguments would look like: Jesus taught Torah observant Christianity as necessary belief and Paul taught Sola Gratia. It was a variation of grace vs. works. There are many attempts to balance the paradox between them, but nothing as complete as the Catholic teaching. By Grace, through Faith, in Love! I think too many Christians, especially in America, have a "by grace through belief" theology. Faith is where our beliefs are put into action as faith takes trust which takes a decision. God cares deeply about our choices, especially the ones we make to build on the foundation of Christ. The salvation of those around us has some dependence on what we do. Of course, no one could be saved by completing the works of the law, but the works of faith that we were saved to do allow us to participate in the grand salvation of the world by our Lord!

Did you hear when he said that the law is there to make us become good, so we can be saved? That's why there was a reformation. Have you heard about salvation by the grace of God? It is yours, if you have faith in Jesus. Faith is a free gift. We have the law not to try and force us to be good or perfect. You are right, that is impossible. Why we have the law is to convict us of our sins, to defeat us so that we see that we need a savior.

Matthew is MY FAVORITE Gospel. Moses brought us the Ten Commandments and Matthew brought us Jesus Sermon on the Mount. The only really Helpful thing in that Bible. Teaches us the Way to Live in Peace and Happiness and Health. Religious people go out of their way to find another Way! Very short sighted is the nicest word I can find to describe them 😊❤
@kilo3989

The Sermon on the Mount is for sure an excellent lesson on how to live in love--but it's far from the only helpful thing, in my estimation! Even just looking at what Jesus does, even just in the gospel of Matthew, gives us an instructional picture of how to live in love. Jesus' words and actions pair together, like two wings of a bird, to help our hearts reach the heights of love they are called to. I pray that everyone (including "religious" folks who have forgotten how to love) may learn from His words and actions!

But how, Father Casey? How on earth could we possibly meet all the demands of Jesus in Matthew? If it's shape up or rule out, I feel like the first one to go. Like when someone threatens to take my clothes, leave them my warm blanket I might need to survive the could nights in the middle - east? I don't think I ever witnessed someone actually act like that (and I think it's questionable if that would be always wise). Same with the command to give whenever you are asked. Like, giving someone my bank card or my car if they ask for it and not caring if they return it or not? Really?

Matthew was a tax collector taking money from his own people for the benefit of their oppressors. You have to be ice cold to do that job, and even though he repented that wouldn't change his entire personality. I love his portrayal in Jesus of Nazareth.

@@kevinkelly2162 In the nineteenth century Pope Leo XIII noted the double standard in critics for whom “a profane book or ancient document is accepted without hesitation, whilst the Scripture, if they only find in it a suspicion of error, is set down with the slightest possible discussion as quite untrustworthy” (Providentissimus Deus, 20). We should call out this double standard when critics demand that every writer of the Scriptures has to be corroborated in other non-biblical accounts before they can be considered to be historical.

I could listen to you expound about the Gospel of Matthew all day. Another great job, Father Case. Your words bring life because the Holy Spirit freshly reveals Christ through your reading of the Holy Scriptures. The Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit, God breathed, these are they that speak of Jesus, giving Life to all that come to Him. I don't want to offend you, but can't you see the difference between the Living Word as opposed to dusty Church proclamations and Church rules and practices even though they are penned in Latin. Your eyes and whole being shines when you are talking about Jesus and the Glory of God in the Scriptures. Can't you see how the Church rules that control what Scriptures can be read at mass according to the calendar stifles your homily because you are not allowed to speak as to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Paul warned the foolish Galatians to stand fast in the liberty wherein Christ had set them free and be not entangled in a yoke of bondage. I can tell how much you love Jesus, and that you are full of the Holy Spirit. Don't be afraid to walk in the full liberty of your calling.

@ The gospels were written in Konic Greek which first century Palestine Jews did not speak and which Jesus did not preach in. Jews could not have been the Gospels intended audience. That they were written in Konic Greek proves that their intended audience were non Jews. Your insisting that their intended audience were Jewish Christians arises from your belief that Christianity is an extension of and the fulfillment of the Old Testament when in fact Christianity is a total break with Judaism and a new religion

@@vinoneil You know, these numbers (5 million) are so uncertain. We don't even know how many practicing Jews lived in Palestine at the time, and even less how many lived in the Diaspora.
