IMO, Gospel of St John is the most Catholic book. It covers the mystery of Incarnation, the role of Mary, the role of Peter, the sacraments: Baptism (discourse with Nicodemus), Holy Matrimony (wedding of Cana), Eucharist (Chapter 6), Holy Orders (Last Supper and washing of feet (Exod 30:39)), and Confession.

The wonder of John's Gospel stems from John's close relationship with his Master. It's no wonder you recognize how unique it is. It starts out revealing the Glory and Divinity of Jesus like none of the other gospels do. He is first declared to be the Lamb of God by John the Baptist. The water to wine sign points to what the coming Holy Spirit will do to the believers and is further explained at the well to the woman of Samaria, after Jesus explains the new birth and salvation only through Him in chapter 3. John continues to reveal the Glory of Christ through more signs and wonders that only the True Messiah can perform and that only coming to Him and believing on Him brings Eternal Life. There is so much more, especially the way only John can reveal the tenderness of Jesus' love for His disciples and for humanity in chapters 14-17. John reveals the very heart of Jesus as He prepares to go the cross and His Father, only by one who because he was the disciple that Jesus loved and was allowed to lay his head on his breast. It's only by a deep love relationship with Jesus and a pure heart will God truly reveal Himself to us.

That might be some of it. I also think that because the other gospels existed, it freed up John to focus on this one thing to supplement them.
@richardsemione701210 күн бұрын
@@Winterclaw42 You might be right. I also think the deeper the relationship with God, the more precise picture of the Glory of God can be communicated. There is a day coming when we shall see God as He is, not just as in a mirror dimly.

Hi, I enjoyed all of your videos about the four gospels. You should do longer ones about them, maybe a little series? I am reading the Bible daily and it is for the first time. I was raised catholic, but lost my way and it took about sixteen years to find my way back. For this reason the part about the lost sheep always resonates with me, but my absolute favourite is the beginning John 1-5. The first time I heard it something just sparked in my soul. I memorised it and read it daily and it always fills me with joy.😊

As mentioned in another comment, thank you for this lovely video! I have two suggestions for further vids: * How much did Mary and Joseph know about Jesus' true nature as he was growing up? * I'd love to see a video exploring how dopey the disciples could be sometimes... "When can I stop forgiving my brother?" "Can we send those annoying kids away?" "There's still time, we can stop the crucifixion!"

Of the gospels I find John to address our spiritual (existential) aspect most strongly while the others express the more physical (facts), intellectual (reasoning) and/or emotional (moral) aspects. It is my favorite gospel and as you say, has so many layers. It is definitely on a whole different level in my opinion. Other favorites for me in the New Testament is 1 Corinthians (especially chapter 13) and the book of revelations.
@SknappCFA10 күн бұрын
My favorite Gospel! Fun facts: It was written very late in NT documentary chronology, and it nearly wasn’t accepted into scriptural canon. Unlike Matthew and Luke, there is very little borrowing from Mark or “Q” in its narrative. It is highly unlikely the Apostle John wrote it, so it is better described as written according to Johannine tradition. Also, it has two endings (chapters 20 and 21). Like the good father says, it’s a spiritual masterpiece. “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” WOW! Just wow!

Practically nothing from Mark but it does seem to written around Marks story, adding details and info that syncs very well with Mark

The Gospel of John best conveys the numinous aspects of Christianity, in such an artful way, and it is therefore the Gospel that is most inspiring to me. It can be a challenging read, but ones faith is all the more fortified by engaging with this challenge.

At risk of this being a meandering or dumb observation, what really sticks out to me is that Jesus' characterisation is sort of like that of Goku in the origional Dragon Ball - time and time again, both are presented with obstacles or opponents that *should* be insurmountable, only for them to overcome it, and not even be that difficult for them. For Goku it's more of a comedic gag and for Jesus it's played more serious, but both are meant to highlight that there's something special about them, that they're not quite like everyone else. I don't think think Toriyama intended this while writing it, I just think it's a interesting parallel in storytelling technique
@hoi-polloi18639 күн бұрын
That's a novel parallel! I would not have thought of that. You remind me of how thoroughly God humbled Himself in order to save us. Didn't Jesus get annoyed with his followers at Gethsemane? I recall he told them that if he wanted he could get an army of angels at any time.
@Colddirector8 күн бұрын
@ It’s funny the way you worded that, almost like God saying “Don’t make me come down there!” It does bring up something that always confused me about Jesus though. With his temptations in the desert, Satan brought him to a mountaintop to show all the world’s kingdoms and said they could be Jesus’ if he only bowed down to him. Theologically, I’m pretty sure none of that was actually Satan’s to give? He has a temporary dominion over it but only because God allows it. If Jesus really did want those kingdoms, he wouldn’t need to bow, he’d just take them.

John 3:1 - 21 ..... Nicodemus' confused responses and questions to Jesus make me think that the Jews did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah or believe that he was the Messiah, because he was not the kind of Messiah they were expecting. Jesus spoke of spiritual things and made the point that he was not here to upset or change the world order. But the Jews were expecting a great political Messiah (possibly even a warrior/hero}, who would lead them in this physical world. Nicodemus' confusion over needing to be born again of water and spirit seems to explain why the Jews were not accepting of Jesus ...... they were expecting a warrior Messiah, which is why Herod had the male born killed to eliminate competition. This disconnect makes me wonder if rejection by the Jews and the crucifixion was the divine plan all along ......i.e., the Jews were simply fulfilling the role God expected and knew they would play ..... but it is clear in the Gospels, that Jesus was making a sincere/true effort to "preach" fulfillment of the law of Moses to them and frustrated that they were rejecting him.
