Iran Protests: What’s Happening and What Comes Next, w/ Prof. Mohammad Marandi

Iran’s protests have been more enduring than previous waves. Some call it a CIA-backed color revolution while others say it is a popular movement. There have been significant incidents of armed violence. And there is no doubt that Iran’s enemies will take advantage of any sign of weakness as they do in all countries deemed rogue.
To better understand what's going on and what we can expect, Rania Khalek was joined by Mohammad Marandi, professor of english literature and orientalism at the University of Tehran.

Look up "persistent political engagement", a study by the University of Chicago. Iran now is like Hong Kong in 2018, Thailand a few years ago. Read the study, it's evidence for foreign interference in all those cases

N Korea Western funded smears are worst, imho, than Iran. But Iran isn't too far behind. My understanding is that many people visit Iran each year frommany different countries. Where as, with my limited Western knowledge, it seems N. Korea is more difficult to visit. Am I correct or am I misinformed?

PLEASE READ THIS As an Iranian this guy is almost telling the truth, but not the full truth, There are 4 main problems in Iran: 1- most important one: Our economy is being crushed by the US, people are frustrated with the situation and they want to normalize the relationship with the west because the sanctions are costing them a lot! 2- The younger generation who are under 25 feel no connection with the government! government has a traditional views about the world but young people want to dance, date, party, drink, sing, and have western type of fun ( including not wearing hijab)! But the government mostly ignores and restricts them and it's like the government is not acknowledge their existence and their wishes! 3-There are many ethnic groups in Iran including Kurds and Balochs which these 2 are very dangerous ones (I love their people a lot but I should say the problem here) ! what makes it so dangerous is that a) Iranian Kurdistan is attached to Iraqi one and some Kurds want separation b) many of them are armed and these armed groups are taking advantage of situation! if the situation gets worse it can lead to widespread bloodshed between the army and and separatist! 4- (this one makes the government very angry and they mostly shift all the blames on this one!) there are many Persian language media funded by western countries who advocates against the government day and night They do whatever they can to Exacerbating the riots and to be honest they don't care if people are being killed in streets... they just do whatever they can without any moral values in order to have a regime change in future!

And Pompeo admitted on a French TV interview that the US is supplying arms to the Iranian rebels, who could have imagined that? As much as I appreciate Professor Marandi's commentary, he seems to be the eternal optimist, even if Iran negotiates a watertight deal JCPOA deal, the Americans will break it anyway, remember, it's the 'international rules based order' where the US makes the rules and everyone else has to follow them, after all, the US is 'exceptional'!

Actually according to Dr. Chomsky the biggest obstacle is the US Doctrine. When it comes to nations with huge natural resources, US Doctrine absolutely allows no democratic nationalistic government to shape and/or exist - survive in such nations. It started with Dr. Mosadegh and since then continued throughout the world. Even the late Shah was warned in his later years to avoid expressing any nationalistic statements!

Kurds are originally Iranian people, subgroup within Aryan stock, Iran is original homeland of Kurds, who subsequently moved out of ancient Iran to other middle eastern countries like Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Their language is also belong to Iranic classification. Their original religion was Zoarastrianism. Both Turkey and Iran are bombing Kurds currently because the Kurds are demanding more rights and freedom, they are backed by the West and Israel. Today, Kurds are highly divided among themselves politically. So, separatist Kurds are common threat to turkey and Iran. Most of Kurds are sunni muslims, but sizeable minority of them are Shia, and the rest of Kurds stick to their ancient Iranian religion, and Christian Kurds, Yizidi Kurds etc. Kurds want a separate state for the long term in the middle east, which is threat to the territorial integrity of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

This is not new. According to Dr.

Was expecting something a little more balanced about this confusing topic, ie more historical material class analysis. It's not that I don't believe this movement was cooped by US for their interests or whatever but its weird to hear the prof only say how many police died and expect me to care. ACAB forever, and especially when it's the police job to force personal choices onto its citizens. At no point does the Prof talk about the material conditions which made young women protest in the streets and fight for their lives. Is he really saying all these young kids were just paid by US to do this, and it's all fake?

What is the purpose of having a monologue with a regime propagandist, I wonder? Not a word of what Marandi is saying is true. The whole framing of this program is suspect. Why is there no one from the other side(s) to represent their views--to have a fair dispute? Iranian regime uses the same propaganda techniques that Nazi Germany used and now the Israeli regime uses against the Palestinian people. The only difference is that the Iranian regime is far more violent and brutal than its Israeli counterpart. As someone with far better academic credentials than Marandi and as someone who is witnessing the current events from close, I say that that what is unfolding in Iran really sad and tragic. To say that what is been done by the Iranian regime is a crime against humanity is an understatement. And don't talk about material condition to Marandi. I describe him as postcolonial postmodernist propagandist. Their whole crew hate Marxist or historical discourse with a passion.

@@audrey5985 I’m not wrong about Iran. I live in Iran and I have a doctorate in social science. I know what I’m talking about from lived experience. It is important to have an objective assessment of the situation. The accounts of violent crackdowns, mass murder of young, old, children, violence and tape in prisons, and techniques of intimidation are all accurate. From a sociological perspective, Iran is in the midst of a revolution and what Marandi says doesn’t change this reality. Except for a tiny minority who benefit from the regime (either ideologically/psychologically or financially or both), most sectors of the Iranian society cannot wait to get rid of this government (young, old, workers, business owners, cultural workers, intellectuals, academics, students, urban and rural residents etc). Mr Marandi will have to answer for all his lies/activities in the future of Iran.

Absolute mockery of an interview by Rania. Why not ask Mr. Professor why is that the reporter who took picture of Mahsa Amini has been imprisoned for the crime of reporting that a woman had died in custody of police? Why is it that the regime feel so insecure that they detain and keep singers in prison for the crime of highlighting the plight of Iranian society in their songs? Why does regime TV stations do forced confessions on TV which are later retracted by family members of dead protesters in their funerals? Why not challenge Mr Professor on any of these questions and instead ask these lame softball questions? Does Rania know that Marandi's father is in the inner circle of Iran's supreme leader as a paid advisor? Why is that important fact not disclosed to your audience? Where is your journalistic integrity. So many softball questions.

Man, this show has nothing of integrity. It is just a bunch of supposed anti-US imperialists leftists (the only thing they really are is anti-US) and therefore they are willing to support whatever it seems to be anti-US. It does not matter how bad things are in a certain place - if it is anti-US they are with them. US policies deserve a lot of criticism, but making the bulk of one's ideology an a priori and always anti-US attitude (supposedly because you think of yourself as from the left and US must be the only and real imperialism in the world) degenerates in a distorted world hypocritical moral stand. This program is far from being impartial or to aim at reaching the truth.

Attn. All concern: If these unrests continue, if not civil war, the best outcome most likely with the support of Western powers, would be a military dictatorship system similar to what took place in Egypt if not like Saudi Arabia or Bahrain. Don't be a fool. Iran has the only nationalistic government among the West Asian countries. One main reason the regime has survived so far is that it tried its best (for example using religion cover, modified national flag) to hide its nationalism. Why you may ask? To learn the reason one must pay attention to the US Doctrine when it comes to nations with great natural resources. Absolutely no nationalistic government is allowed to exist or survive in such nations. It started with Dr. Mosadegh and since then continued throughout the world. Even the late Shah was warned in his later years to avoid expressing any nationalistic statements! Lately the regime dared exhibiting some nationalism once gained enough military defensive power and confidence. As this momentum continues, the US Doctrine reveals more of it's confronting side to suppress it. Iran may be able to exhibit full nationalism when it obtains unbreakable shield in its defensive stand.
