Breast Cancer Type:
Breast cancer “type” is a general reference to the unique features of breast cancer cells. Most important is if the tumor is considered invasive or non-invasive. “Cell type” and “receptors” are also important. These are some of the puzzle pieces that you and your breast specialists must put together to fully understand your breast cancer and how to best treat it.
Invasive breast cancer:
Invasive breast cancer cells may have the ability to spread beyond the breast to the lymph nodes and other organs of the body. Although this is the type of cancer that can threaten one’s life, 90% of all invasive breast cancers are cured by modern day cancer treatment. “Invasive Breast Cancer“ is covered in great detail with our video lesson (here).
The two most common “cell types” of invasive breast cancer are Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) (70%) and Infiltrating Lobular Carcinoma (ILC) (20%). They both are treated in almost the same fashion with a combination of surgery, possibly chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and radiation therapy. There are other less common cell types of invasive breast cancer which are not covered in this course. These include papillary, mucinous, colloid, tubular, and phyllodes to name a few.
Non-invasive breast cancer:
Non-invasive breast cancer is generally defined as DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ). It does not spread to the lymph nodes or beyond. Think of DCIS as a “pre-cancerous” area of the breast. An invasive cancer may evolve from an area of DCIS over time if it is untreated and left in the body to grow. Learn more about “Non-Invasive DCIS“ with our video lesson (here).
Breast Cancer Stage:
Stage is a way of estimating how life-threatening a cancer is based on the “size” of the tumor, if cancer involves the lymph nodes, and if it has spread to other parts of the body. There are many other important cancer factors beyond stage that determine how a breast cancer should be treated. The term “stage” is often confused with tumor “grade.” Tumor grade is a reference to how abnormal the cancer cells appear under the microscope. Stage of cancer is a reference to how extensive the breast cancer was at the time of diagnosis.
Non-Invasive Breast Cancer:
(Stage 0)
This refers to the presence of DCIS without evidence of invasive breast cancer. The size of the tumor can be small or large. A lumpectomy, followed by radiation to the breast, is the most common treatment approach. A mastectomy may be required to remove a large area of DCIS in some situations. Surgery is the first treatment for Stage 0 breast cancer.
Early Stage Invasive Breast Cancer:
(Stage I)
The invasive cancer tumor is smaller than 2 cm and there is no evidence that cancer has spread to the axillary lymph nodes. Surgery is usually the first treatment. Infrequently, chemotherapy before or after surgery is sometimes needed.
(Stage II)
The most common scenario is that the tumor is larger than 2 cm but smaller than 5 cm without evidence of spread to the axillary lymph nodes. Another scenario is that the tumor is less than 5 cm in size and there is evidence of cancer in a few axillary lymph nodes. Surgery or chemotherapy are often the first treatment options.
Later Stage Breast Cancer:
(Stage III)
These cancers are generally much larger tumors and in a few situations have grown into the skin or the chest wall. Many have already spread to the axillary lymph nodes. The cancer can grow in a way that involves other tissue around the tumor that makes it difficult to remove surgically. Stage III cancer also includes “inflammatory breast cancer.” There is no evidence of cancer spreading to other body sites yet in Stage III breast cancer. Chemotherapy is usually the first treatment.
(Stage IV)
Any breast cancer that is found to have spread to other parts of the body (distant metastasis) is Stage IV. The size of the tumor and involvement of the lymph nodes is still important information for treatment decisions. The fact that cancer has spread elsewhere reflects the life-threatening nature of Stage IV breast cancer. Chemotherapy or hormonal therapy is usually the first treatment.

Stage lll A. July 2019. Double mastectomy with 18 bad lymph nodes. I had reconstruction same day. Chose 27 radiation burns and anastrozole 1mg every day. I am HR positive and HER2 negative. In 2000, I was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, just above my left breast. My Dr never explained this to me. I had surgery and opted for no chemo or radiation. Since the situation seems “dire” at the time…I wasn’t living under the waves of nausea, exhaustion and weakness I watched my dad suffered through for the last 5 years of his life. I wanted quality of life over quantity and opted to spend this time making memories and leaving my family without having to watch me suffer and waste away. Here today I stand still alive. Having seen All three of my children married and with children of their own. I have danced at 3 weddings, held 10 beautiful “grands” at birth and took care of my aging mother. Things Id never dreamed Id be able to do. Thank you for clarifying the diagnosis process and breaking this down for the person who is likely not to hear much past the word “cancer”. May you be blessed with a long n happy life from the bottom of my heart… but letting people know.. not to go for the necessary chemo at stage 4 is not the brightest of idea i see here… i lost my mom with a stage 4 diagnosis… with hormonal receptive oestrogen drugs.. we got here back to stage 1… but could never get it out of the bones as it is impossible… seeing here go through pain n so much discomfort… we had no choice apart from chemo… eventually she couldn’t handle chemo n left us in the first cycle!!! Its hard to understand the scenario you’ve mentioned with a stage 4 here!!! But people might get a wrong idea about the treatments n may avoid whats necessary!!!

I just found out I had ductal cell carcinoma, stage 2 this afternoon. From what you're saying, it sounds like mine is the stage 2 that hasn't attacked any lymph nodes. They haven't seen evidence of it in the ultrasound, so that's good news. Time to move forward and get rid of this. 💗

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 72. My tumor was 55 mm but at least it had not spread. I went through chemo, surgery and radiation treatment. The chemo I thought I wasn't going to survive but that might be because I was part of a study and I don't know if that didn't make the chemo worse. I was triple positive. 5.4 cm tumor and 1 lymph node (that we know of via ultrasound) before chemo. My dr didn’t give me a stage bc she wanted to give me a stage after surgery, which was after chemo. After chemo the invasive cancer was gone and I only had high grade DCIS left over. This was confirmed via mastectomy surgery. I had 2A even though my tumor was over 5 cm + 1 lymph node.

Lobular looks and acts differently from ductal. Lobular many times doesn't create a lump but grows in a linear fashion, eventually spiderwebbing. Lobular also doesn't like to show up very well or at all on mammograms, MRI, and PET. I was diagnosed 2b lobular 4 months after a "clear" 3D mammogram. I went in to my doc due to a dented area in my breast and was diagnosed after biopsy. Positive nodes didn't show on MRI or PET scan, or at surgery. They were only discovered as positive a few days later in pathology tests.

Went for my annual complete physical exam on 12/10/2022 and told my doctor that my felt lump in my left breast and she quickly ordered Mammogram and ultrasound for diagnosis on 12/20/2022 and yes I am diagnosed with ductal carcinoma stage 2 breast cancer yesterday 12/22/2022 good news is it hasn’t attacked my lymph nodes they haven’t seen any evidence of it in biopsy my doctor moved forward very quickly with blood work and MRI next week after Christmas break. I been fightin' Cancer for the last 10 year's now. I had stage 2. It came back on me 4 time's so far. I went through 7 month's of Kemo and 5 month's of Radiation. So I had early stage breast cancer 12 years ago. Beat it, but was diagnosed with triple negative, early stage, high grade breast cancer recently. I just had a bilateral mastectomy 5 weeks ago and start chemo Friday. Lymph nodes were clear. Are the chances of reoccurrence the same as non triple negative since I had the bilateral mastectomy? Hi, I was wondering whether you could advise me. My Mum has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has a 8cm tumour which has been described as non invasive, and a singular cancerous lympth node that has been said as invasive. I recently had surgery for what I believe is Stage 1 or 2 breast cancer. My oncologist here in Uruguay confirmed that what I have is very non-aggressive. But for the last 3 weeks I have felt tenderness and pain in the medial side of my areola and the inversion has worsened. I have also noticed that most of the areola tissue has been pulled inwards too, and I have started to feel pain the tenderness spread further from the nipple inwards towards my sternum and backwards towards my shoulder blade. After series of tests (mammography, sonography, biopsy) I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, stage 2 (2.8cms). I underwent radical mastectomy in December 10,2018 ,3 weeks later I started six sessions of chemotherapy. Now , I was told by my oncologist to rest for weeks and have to start my radiotherapy for 25 sessions. Do you think I have to go through this painful and nauseous process? Do I have any options?
