My first baby girl was a micro preemie and in NiCU for 2 1/2 months. I had to exclusively pump and they would administer my breast milk through her feeding tube till she was big enough to start breastfeeding. I wasn’t educated enough and despite my best efforts I stopped producing milk. We don’t really know why so after she was released from the hospital I only was able to BF for about 3 weeks. Now I have another girl who is now 2. I had to have c sections with both of my girls. I got covid 1 week before I had her. So once they cut me open my O2 levels dropped and I got “covid” pneumonia in both lungs. I didn’t even get to hold or kiss my baby they took her immediately down to NICU. I was taken to ICU for 5 days and by the grace of God and his miraculous healing powers I was about to be out on a ventilator but God performed a miracle in a matter of hours and doctors literally studied me because they had never seen anything like it. I went from nearly dying to just needing low flow O2. So i was in ICU and my baby was in NICU to be monitored in case she got covid which she didn’t and there was also a slight thyroid issue with me and her. So I couldn’t even pump. After 6 days in hospital I finally got to see my baby and we went home. I couldn’t see her except from my phone via their camera livestream system they have for those 6 days. It was traumatic. But no one thought I’d be able to BF since I hadn’t even been pumping. Unfortunately I let fear and pressure get to me so we gave her formula while I worked to build my supply. After another 2 weeks my supply came in. It was hard because she was used to the formula and bottle but we did it. Unfortunately I got sick again along with some other issues and ended up back in hospital and couldn’t pump for 5 days and when I got home I was discouraged and she was almost fully formula/bottle fed for the next 2-3 weeks. My supply dried completely up. I prayed and prayed and my lactation consultant told me about re-lactating. I started pumping around the clock every 2 hours and putting her on my breast just for comfort. Instead of a paci. I did that consistently for just under 2 weeks and then one day I woke up and my shirt and bed was soaked. I was able to re-lactate and my supply came back. So I began my full on BF journey when she was about 3-4 months. I was able to strictly BF which lasted till she was just 2 days shy of her 2nd birthday. I give all the praise and glory to God. So I have learned since that women have been able to re-lactate after MONTHS of drying up or just giving up. I am sure no one will read this long comment but thank you Amanda for sharing this! I’ve always loved and supported you YEARS and you are the most amazing Mom and I feel so honored to be able to watch your journey of motherhood. Thank you for sharing this with us God is using you in such an incredible way. I love you!

EVERYTHING in this video is absolute GOLD!! Im a mom of two and the second time around I am actually able to nurse my baby (shes two months almost three) first time around i was only able to pump because of an elongated nicu stay/ other digestive problems with my baby. At first I was bottle and breastfeeding my newborn but then my oldest got a cold and I decided to nurse my newborn directly to make sure she would get all the nutrients and immunity. And just stuck with it ever since. I feed on demand, mainly because im a stay at home mom and im able to do so. but to anyone who reads this, EVERYTHING that Amanda has said is probably the best advice ive come across Sending so much love to you Amanda in this new stage of your fabulous life and congratulations to any mama or new mamas watching this video ❤

How did nursing work after he turned 1? Did you still give baby 3 meals a day and just nurse when they were hungry/thirsty? Did you only nurse certain times a day? My baby is only 5 months old but I'm stressed about it already

@@AlaysiaMareayeah so every baby has different needs but that’s what I did with my son. He didn’t eat a whole lot of food til he was 18 months and I nursed on demand til he was around 2.5. At that time I nursed him in the morning, before nap, before bed, and during the night if he woke up. You can nurse as often as they’d like until you believe they are consistently getting enough calories from food and then you can start cutting back on breastfeeding. Food before one is just for fun so don’t stress to much about them eating food a lot. Your baby might love food and be a more interested in that so you can just tailor it to what they need. I promise you’ll know once the time comes. I was also scared too but my 3 year old adjusted well. There were moments where I worried he wasn’t eating enough so I’d breastfeed more that day. By around 2.5 years old he was doing about one session a day because I had another baby and couldn’t stand nursing him anymore. Nursing sessions will gradually decrease as they get older but some days you’ll be surprised they want to nurse more. Just depends on their day to day needs! It’s definitely a journey and a consistent working relationship between mom and nursing. It’s hard work but also very worth it. Nursing a toddler kind of makes you slow down and builds a closer bond between you both. Solid starts on instagram is a great resource! Congrats on the new baby!

I agree that the main key to success with breastfeeding is to not give up. This was very challenging for me because we dealt with latch issues early on and pressure from the pediatrician made me feel insufficient and constantly question whether I was doing enough for my baby. My husband was incredibly supportive and were it not for him I would’ve probably given in to the lie that I was not providing my baby the sufficient nutrition she needed. We are now 11 months in EBF and THRIVING. Our breastfeeding journey was the most challenging during the first few months (clogged ducts, painful latch, mastitis - the works), but my baby and I have learned so much together and are both now very confident in this beautiful process. My baby is more than just “fed”, she is nourished, she is comforted, she is connected.

Omg I am one of those moms who wanted to breast feed that didn't have the support and help I needed. I was briefly shown how to do it in the hospital and my baby was not latching well so eventually the lady just gave me a shield and told me to use it for a while as a feeding aid for now but I need to get him to transition to the breast. Well I got home and I genuinely had the toughest time trying to keep up with it and get my baby to latch. I was not producing enough milk, he was just not latching the way I needed, I was having a hard time getting him into comfortable feeding positions, and I was trying to pump to increase supply but it was not really working. Then after about a week of struggling, I started getting severe sharp pain in the breasts when I would pump, my nipples were extremely irritated and chapped (come to find out it was because apparently you can get a yeast infection on your nipples) and my baby wasnt eating enough and was screaming crying of hunger. I ended up getting mastitis in BOTH breasts and several clogged ducts, and was in horrible excruciating pain trying to pump and feed my hungry baby. I had a hell of a time getting anybody to help take care of us, my obgyn just told me to keep pumping and massage my breasts (which I was already doing and it wasn't working) and they referred me to a lactation consultant who never called me back after I called her several times crying in desperate need of help. My obgyn basically didn't know what to do to help me because "they dont deal with breastfeeding issues." I was in such misery and pain and the lack of healthcare support and and my inexperience being a first time mom led me to eventually be forced to have to quit and switch over to formula. It was the one of the worst experience of my life tbh, and I really wish that women got better support postpartum and never have to go through what I went through. They threw me to the wolves, and I had no idea how to troubleshoot and felt helpless. Smh.

Still breastfeeding at 8 months I’m so proud of myself. I dealt with so many obstacles I had my baby at 35 weeks she lost 1 lb before we got discharged they told me I had to give formula because she wasn’t getting enough breast milk. I kept pumping because my goal was to breastfeed I began to exclusively pump it was extremely difficult and exhausting they said I had to track what she was drinking. At 2 months she then got a cows milk allergy from my milk and I had to go completely dairy free until she was 6 months very difficult. I had to keep getting her used to latching because she got used to the bottle and how quick the flow was. It was a struggle but I kept trying every morning when my breast were full over and over at 3 months she got the hang of it. Fast forward to now I exclusively breastfeed no pumping the only struggle is she always wants to nurse in the middle of the night but I don’t mind. Thank God for continuing to give me the strength and patience to keep going.

I have all the respect for moms who carry through with breastfeeding. I chose not to after a week of trying, because I wanted to focus on my own recovery. Sounds selfish, but she was a 10lb baby and carrying her wrecked havoc on my pelvis. I could barely walk for the last 2 months of pregnancy and for the first week after I gave birth I couldn’t walk and could barely sit up, but I had to hold my 10lb baby for hours trying to breastfeed. None of the breastfeeding positions didn’t cause tons of pain on my body. I had all the breastfeeding resources, had skin to skin during the golden hour, had lactation consultants do home visits, but it was just my husband and I and nobody else to help us and I chose to prioritize my own recovery over breastfeeding. I do feel a bit guilty over it 😅 but she’s gaining weight like a champ, and tbh I had the most allergies and the worst gut health (ibs) and PCOS out of my siblings, and I was the only one who was breastfed so it’s not really the end all be all

Breastfeeding is a journey. In the beginning i was beside myself because it hurt so bad. I would cry when he would feed. Eventually i saw a lactation specialist and over time it got much better. Now he’s almost four months and it’s easy. It’s crazy how he went from 30-40 minutes to like 10-15 minutes in total. They get more efficient as they get older. It’s been hard for me to eat or drink water because I’m so busy with him. That’s frustrating. I get good sleep because i literally go to bed when he does. I get nap trapped a lot which i love but i can never get anything done lol

I mentioned in the video. Your body makes colostrum when you’re pregnant and baby drinks that until Milk comes in!

My son is 18mos and still on my boobs… it’s a struggle to wean him off right now. He wants it before a nap… before bedtime then after 4 hrs it’s every hr. Consuming cabbage makes me produce a lot… I’m watching what I have to eat now so my supply can decrease. He has teeth and it hurts when he sleeps on my boobs. I’ve had mastitis a hand full of times. Good luck to all the moms with breastfeeding!

In California when we breastfeed the doctors tell us to buy Vitamin D drops … what are your thoughts on that? Were you told that?

I don’t think it’s just a California thing

We don’t do anything except breastmilk. I focus on what I eat so my milk is a nutritious as possible. I know some moms do that, but personally do not and haven’t researched it. I just keep it simple and stick to the basics.

Definitely no vitamin D. There’s a reason breast milk doesn’t contain it. It’s a hormone that’s produced naturally with sunlight. Do not take artificial supplements for you or baby

I tried to breast-feed for the first months and my milk supply did not grow. Even tried pumping and nothing would come out. In the support clinic here really didn’t help. They actually made you feel horrible mom because I couldn’t breast-feed.

Would the baby just feed on colostrum until the milk comes in?

Yes. That’s everything the baby needs and more!

What if you want to have husband feed baby?

You can pump instead of feeding and give a bottle. I found exclusively nursing was easier. We do a bottle every once in a while

I love this video! I’m a ftm and I sooo needed to hear everything you said here. I too was told that I could give my baby formula while I waited for my milk to come in. I did that for a few weeks and I could not take seeing my baby in pain due to her being gassy and uncomfortable because of the formula. I said no more formula I need to just trust that my body is giving her enough!and that was the best decision i made. Thank you for all the information! 🩷🩷

i’m only about half way through your video right now but i’m curious to know your husband’s experience with your breastfeeding? in my experience (im a year and a half in exclusivity bf) it seemed like it was harder my mine to build that connection, i’m wondering if you had a similar experience and how y’all overcame 😊🫶🏼

I think baby bonds more with mom at first because they spent time in our womb and apparently think we are the same person until around 6 months. They are looking for our milk and our scent. We are their comfort. My husband has bonded so much with Adriel, but didn’t do as many naps the first few months, because baby only wanted me. I think it’s easier as baby gets bigger. In the beginning, Rafa focused more on nourishing me & doing things around the house. Take care of momma so momma can take care of baby. He would hold him during wake windows, so I could shower and things, but wasn’t until around 4 months that Adriel napped more with dad & that was the first time I left to get my hair done for kore than an hour 😅 It gets easier! The newborn phase is more intimate with the mother I think. Also exclusively breastfeeding and not doing bottles, he was most the time with me.
