You actually don't need to have a dehydrator, just use a salt water mixture to wash your leaves, rinse them and pat them dry, then take some uncoated utility string and tie bunches and hang it upside down to dry. In about a week it will be completely dry and you can put into glass jars to store.

Flyscreen between 2 tables, baking trays in front of a sunny window, I even made one from galvanised corrugated roofing iron with a glass door over it. It can sit on an angle aligned with the angle of the sun and nothing runs down to the bottom.

@@deborahsmith669I've never done this. I just brush them off unless they're extremely dirty, & if so, I just lightly rinse. Soaking will cause them to waterlog, take longer to dry, & possibly cause bacterial growth if placed fresh in oil.

Was doing some cleanup and weed pulling around my shop when I saw a bunch of these plants growing around one of the buildings. Figured they were just weeds. I weed-wacked one, then stopped. I did a google lens search out of curiosity as I have, in my autumn years, become very interested in foraging herbs and edible plants and weeds in the local area near the James River. I read up on this plant, and was astounded at the health benefit claims, particularly the supposed effects it has on tumors and cancer. I was recently diagnosed with melanoma, neck, and lung cancer. I harvested the leaves, dried them in a rack I made for that very purpose, and two days later, today, I ground up the leaves in my Ninja, and put them in an instant pot to cook for a bit. I anticipated the tea would taste like shit, but the aroma was so pleasant like the leaves of a melon or cucumber vine. When the tea was ready (20 minutes ago), I tried it. Wow, it is my new favorite tea forever. I love my green, but THIS tea! I added a littler honey to it, and it sweetened up perfectly with less than a 1/2 teaspoon. Not exaggerating a bit when I tell you that my cough and weeze have disappeared only after half a cup. OMG, you MUST try this tea. I am going to bathe in it, lol. Thanks for this video, btw. Subscribed.

I have harvest mullein laid it on newspaper in hot attic, then bagged it up. I use for asthma. I have a pipe made of materials like nose cone of rockets, ceramic pipe ok too. Never a corn cob pipe as herbals burn too hot. I use 2 screens in base of pipe to contain the fuzzy bits from leaves. Really opens the airway. Blessed be.

I like to use the leaves from the 1st year plants too, but I follow the rule of 3, that is I only take 1/3rd of the leaves from each plant. It is so helpful for my asthma flare ups. That's a really nice dehydrator, I just clip the leaves to a clothes line or dry in open air outside. Great video.

I had found some mullien in my yard. To protect it, I put garden edging around it and fresh soil in it and gave it some nutrients. God planted some here about 10 years ago... AFTER I had caught a really bad cold. Our neighbor told us what it was. Since then, I have protected it and other herbs we found. I'll be making a separate bed of plantain in the fall! I'm slowly learning. You'd think at my age, I'd know this stuff already! but nope.... I am just learning all this since the internet came about. I guess it's good for something, huh?!

Delighted to see you showcase a plant I've known since I was a child growing up in the high deserts of Nevada! It's long been a favorite of my own. I noticed you missed one usage, though, which is to steep the flowers in a neutral oil (coconut oil is nice, but there are many which would work) for several weeks, and then decant to use the oil, warmed, as a treatment for earaches, particularly soothing for children!

I found one growing in a huge pot behind my peach tree. Had no idea it was there until a few weeks ago, and now it has produced a flower stalk. I also saw some on the side of my garage in a place I rarely go... so, next year they should flower. Very interesting plant with so many uses! I looked it up online to ID the plant in my yard. The article said mullein seeds are toxic (and only the seeds), so they should never be consumed... and that they have been recorded to be viable between 50-100 years. Each plant has thousands of seeds, and it is considered to be a noxious weed in my state, too. Oh well... I like it, so it stays, just like the red squirrels. 🤗

This was the big ongoing joke among tobacco cutters when I was young and worked in the fields. Tobacco-cutting is seasonal work. Tobacco farmers would hire unskilled labor, who were unfamiliar with either tobacco or the large-leaved mullein plants that would grow alongside the fields. Those who knew the difference would joke at the newcomers: "That's some fine-lookin' mullein you got there." The joke got assimilated to the point that it became a genuine compliment to say to a farmer how nice his mullein looked. There are two distinct kinds of mullein that grow in and around Kentucky and Tennessee where I grew up, commonly called Candle Mullein and Moth Mullein. The former has very fuzzy leaves, like comfrey, and yellow flowers closely spaced atop a tall stalk, such that the entire plant resembled a giant candlestick tipped with yellow flame. Folklore says that the fuzzy stalks were dipped in wax or tallow and used as candles, but I don't know how true that is; I haven't tried it, myself (yet). The other kind, Moth Mullein, looks similar but with less hairy leaves and white flowers with pink or red centers, held less tightly to the stalk such that they look like a cloud of white moths circling about the tip of the stalk. I have smoked mullein leaves, finely shredded and dried slightly over an incandescent lightbulb. Rolled in a cigarette paper or packed into a pipe and burned, the leaves produce a cool smoke, soothing to the lungs and throat. It would be nice if this video told what kind of mullein is pictured here; it doesn't look quite like either of the two species I am familiar with.

It is refwrrwd to as rabbit tobacco often, & it is wonderful to smoke if you have a wer cough. It helps break it up. You can also roll it into a bundle & dry, then light it & allow the smoke tho drift up into your downturned face for almost the same benefit.😊

@@gaminawulfsdottir3253I'm unfamiliar with this variety too. I've only ever seen & grown Candle Mullein in SC Ohio. The torches are not an old wive's tail! They're called Hags' Torches. I make them after removing the seeds. I dip &/or pour bee's wax over them(depending on the length.) They burn hot, produce lovely smelling smoke, and deter mosquitoes!

This is all really a matter of preference. Test it out to see what makes the best tea for your tastes. It might take longer to dry if still attached to the plant. The flowers are too delicate to wash. I keep the rib on the leaves, but you can also remove it.

Other places say you need a DECOCTION which means you have to simmer for 10-15 minutes for PROPER benefits and also strain it thru a coffee filter because the hairs on the leaves will irritate your throat.

When you rinse your mullein with "hose" water that could possibly be with chorlinate/florinated water. What's the benefit 🤔

The easiest way to dry things is to thread them with a needle and hang it in your hot car for an afternoon we always dry things from the garden or stuff like catnip using this method and it works great especially if it's an old junk car that doesn't run anymore

Two Comments: 1. You have a fantastic garden with a very nice layout. 2. Due to having covid virus three times my lung capacity is down roughly 40%. How long roughly in your skilled opinion would I roughly be looking at improved breathing? I ask roughly because there are No absolutes except this one "Jesus Christ is the way the truth and the life".

To make mullein tea, you can use 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 grams) of dried mullein leaves or flowers for every 1 cup (240 ml) of water. Pour the boiling water over the mullein and steep for 10-15 minutes. You can strain the tea through a filter to remove the leaves.
