Breathing is one of the most important in butterfly technique. Correct breathing will allow you to swim long distances without getting tired. Also, hand-return have a large impact on your swimming. You should return relaxed hands forward.
In this video, Evgeny Lomtev explains how to do correctly hand-return with breathing. After watching this video, you will understand the entire process of breathing and you will easily fix your butterfly swimming technique. For beginners, it is better to start from first butterfly swimming lesson to build the technique step by step.
If you have any questions about breathing in butterfly and hand return technique, leave it in the comments!

How often do you like to breathe: Every stroke, every 2nd or every 3rd?
@ttc744
@ttc744 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Evgeny, breathing gets easier as ones butterfly stroke improves (plus fitness). I think every 2nd stroke is good and is achievable. Its even better to breath every 3 but is harder and required better technique and fitness / strength.

Thanks for the video instruction! Many great tips that I ought to write down and seal for poolside use! I'm transitioning from breathing on every stroke to breathing every 2nd. I may like every 2nd when I find it keeps me going forward and when I can inhale more air when taking the breath!

Hi Evgeny and Alexander - thank you for another great video. Yes the dryland exercises are really good and I have improved lots especially in my arm recovery since doing them . I need to add the rocking exercises - i will try but found it difficult. Lots of great advice in this video esp getting the head in first not having a pause before breathing. Your series is the best butterfly on KZbin the web. Also happy Christmas to all your team

Any advice how not to get water inhaled when breathing, I have this problem only with butterfly, with freestyle even big waves do not matter, but swimming butterfly, sometimes I inhale splashed water, possible because of faster breath, not sure, what I am doing wrong there.

I like to breath on every stroke. Doing the butterfly stroke requires so much muscle energy that I like to get as much oxygen as possible. I am over 50. I can't hold my breath like the young twenty somethings.
@liamoconnor434
@liamoconnor434 4 жыл бұрын
Sharlene Eng just saying it’s kinda a trade off because most of the time it takes more energy to take a breath because im sure your technique isn’t perfect . (No ones is if your not a pro.) you might be making it harder to breath because it’s making your hips sink

This isn't bad...I posted a rant video on my channel (which isn't popular) lol but if there's one thing I know, it's teaching. And since I'm a swimming teacher I know what I'm talking about. This is the closest I've seen that someone actually has a clue so well done! I'm convinced most of the butterfly drills are completely useless.

Firstly, very good and informative video. Thank you very much. Looking forward to such in depth videos for the other 3 strokes, starts and turns. You mentioned at 6:48 that a breath is taken while returning the hands forward. However, shouldn't a breath be taken at the end of the pull? This also seems like what the swimmer is doing when the video is played in slow motion.

Thank you! Yes, breathing starts when swimmer finishes the arm stroke and performed during arm recovery. Important thing, to finish taking breath before hands enter the water in front
