This is Veena. Veena is an ancient Instrument originating probably around 400BC. Indian Sitar is classical instrument originating during Mughal Era (15th-16th centuary). Sitar was a result of hybrid between Veena and Persian Settar (persian instrument brought by muslim rulers). Nowadays Sitar is mostly used in Hindustani (North Indian) classical which has heavy Persian influence and Veena is used in Carnatic (South Indian) which has retained ancient Vedic influence.
