What hardscape do you love using in your tanks? Also, what did you find most useful from this video that you might implement when creating your own tank in the future?

Mopani driftwood. Thankfully it's.pretty obtainable as PetSmart sells chunks (branded as Fluval, weirdly enough). It's expensive, but gorgeous. Actually planning to take a trip to the bow River here in Calgary today or tomorrow with a home Depot bucket to grab an assortment of interesting river stones. Setting up a selection of new tanks over the next couple weeks, and buying rocks is just way too expensive. Which kind of sucks because my LFS has *really* great rocks. Re: the hygger heater. Something I've found kind of interesting is that these newer Chinese brands are coming to the table with really great lights and heaters - In addition to hygger, I've got a couple nicrew lights and hiataung heaters, and I've found they work really well and provide much better electronics at the same price as the traditional brands, and I've never had a problem with any of them. For instance, all my heaters have digital temperature displays, out of water/over temp protections, safety housings, etc - meanwhile I've got Fluval heaters with none of that that cost more. I like being able to do a water change and not worry about the heater breaking, for instance, if I pull too much water out. Same with the lights - fully programmable led lights with 5 time:colour:intensity settings and gradual changes between so you can have sunrises and sunsets and fine duration control... The traditional manufacturers need to step up their game. It's fine if they cost more (and I expect better quality for that) but they need to offer the same feature set on base models to compete.

@@Wintersdark Stones, hardwood and plants are a bit on the expensive side but they do bring out the beauty in a tank. In regards to Hygger, the two 20 longs in the video use their lights and my plants have thrived. I did a build video recently on a 55 gallon Fan Shrimp tank, and that tank uses a Hygger light and heater.

My favourite hard scape to use or at least the only wood I use im pretty sure is called Malaysian driftwood, I don't know why but it always seems to fit great in all my tanks!

How will you cull the unwanted shrimp. Its difficult to remove low grade ones from heavily crowded tank...
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
It's time consuming but pretty much all breeders need to do it one shrimp at a time. I'm not planning to sell them as the goal is to get as many as possible, low and high grades. If I were to cull them, I'd put them in another tank, maybe even create a skittle tank.

Just subscribed, about to binge watch some videos. I have my first 12 shrimp that i got because they were bred from multi color neo's and are not super red or blue..mostly really light blue, pink or gray. I still like them and they will do everything i need them to for my 40gal tank. I have a 30gal cube im setting up just for higher quality in the future.

Hey, can we use RO reject water for shrimps breeding?? I have main tank with Tetras and other fishes. I have RO system for them with others filters like carbon filter. I use declorinator as well. Can I use RO reject water for shrimps, seems best for hardy fishes like Neocardinal shrips/ cherry shrips. Whats you opinion??

Unfortunately I've never used RO water and don't know much about RO reject water. You can join the following Facebook group that has close to 50K shrimp keepers and maybe one of them might have an answer: facebook.com/groups/AquariumShrimpKeeping

Very nice! How do you sterilize your plants? Also, what filter are tou running on this tank?
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
Thank you :) There is the Bleach Dip method as well as a Hydrogen Peroxide dip method. I've never done it before but after seeing that Damselfly Nymph, it's best to play it safe. Here is a link on how to do the dips: buceplant.com/blogs/aquascaping-guides-and-tips/how-to-quarantine-new-aquarium-plants As for the filter, I'm running an AquaClear 50 with a baffled flow. I have also put a foam filter where the intake tube is so that babies don't get sucked up. It's a bit overkill in filtration but there was no sense in buying a new filter for it. I thought of using a sponge filter but it would have just taken up a lot of space in this nano tank.

@@Shleeeemp yeah, I've got hydra in a tank I'm going to tear down. Gonna hit it with No Planaria then bath the plants too - I keep mystery and nerite snails in my tanks so hydra can be hard to deal with. Don't want that happening again.

I doing something kind of similar but i need advice in terms of the cycle of my tank, it has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, but there's only 5ppm of nitrates. I have been cycling with gravel from an established tank since November i think i saw the ammonia spike but the reason i haven't got any shrimp yet os because im afraid they'll die and the black roses im getting are a little on the expensive side.. I was just wondering if you think my shrimp will be fine or not (the ph is 6.6 by the way)
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
If your tank has been cycling from November, it's already cycled as it only takes a few weeks. You should be good to add shrimp into the tank. If you run your hand along the glass and it feels slimy, that's biofilm, which they love to eat. Ammonia and Nitrite at 0 is excellent. Nitrate at 5ppm is low and excellent as well. Usually plants will absorb nitrates as a nutrient source, that's why really heavily planted tanks can sometimes have Nitrates of 0 because of how much they absorb. Do you have plants in your tank? Also, are you running an inert substrate or active one?
@myplecosatemyphone
@myplecosatemyphone 6 ай бұрын
@@shrimplycanadian I do have lots of live plants so the plants do explain the nitrates being low and yes I do use an active substrate. Honestly I think I was just worrying too much.
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
@@myplecosatemyphone If you're wanting to keep Neos, then an inert substrate will always work best. Active is best for Caridina shrimp as it lowers the pH and softens water hardness.

What gravel did you use? Never ever in my fish keeping career (that's not really a career) never seen any gravel so dusty Edit: what gorilla glue are you using? Gel or the normal one?
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
This is the gravel I used: amzn.to/3S6RyAv (Usually you're supposed to rinse it out but I wanted to see if I could still have a decently clear tank if I had a really slow water flow while filling the tank). It actually worked out and I wasn't stuck with cloudy water waiting for days for it to clear up.

@@shrimplycanadian Oh I used that substrate for my 5 gallon ecosystem(It was a good plan at that time) and it was not cloudy at all. Weird...Maybe its because I bought it from petsmart and not amazon(idk if there's a deference).

@@just_your_average_fish_keeper It's easier for me to order off Amazon as I usually get various items. I'm not sure if Petsmart sells this particular brand though.

@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 6 ай бұрын
@@just_your_average_fish_keeper Probably a similar brand. Some of these substrates you have to wash really well but I also trickled the water in to the tank when filling it as I knew it would get cloudy if I just poured it in. It seems that the substrate wasn't pre-washed hence why it was dusty when I poured it into the tank.
