Nick - Great video! Perfect overview of the betta breeding process. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do an update video to show the outcome of these crossbreeds . . . I am especially interested in seeing what the pure black male x platinum female produces. I have successfully bred many bettas using a very similar process, but I always pair fish of the same type/variety. Although I have always been tempted, I have not been bold enough to try drastic crossbreeds. So, PLEASE keep us posted and keep the great content coming!

Great video! I loved breeding betas - nearly 50 years ago. The male is invariably very protective and defensive of his bubble nest, chasing off the female as an intruder. Only when the female swims under the bubble nest and faces downward while holding station with a slow and deliberate swimming motion - almost like enticingly wiggling her hips - is she safe. :). The male then gently approaches, wraps himself over the female and quivers to help the female discharge her eggs. After each embrace they both sink stunned. Normally the male recovers first, then shoots around collecting the eggs in his mouth and blows them up into the nest. Sometimes the female helps, but the male watches her warily, ever protective of his nest. The pair repeat this coupling for up to an hour, and as soon as the female is finished laying, she immediately loses interest and wanders away from the nest … at which point the male becomes protective of the nest and aggressive again. Time to remove the female. One of natures most beautiful couplings. Watching their shuddering embraces and seeing the eggs cascade over and down the male’s tail is a rapture to see. Thats why I always bred them in glass tanks on raised shelves to allow full viewing. Keep the water depth to about 75mm. After the fry consumed their egg yolk, I fed them on cultured infusoria - Google. (Former vice chairman, Clyde Aquarist Society.)

Good work mate, I used to breed Bettas back in the eighties. I used a slightly different method. I made a tank 4foot by two by 250 deep. Divided with Perspex to make small individual sections. I'd always add at least two females next to the male. After about a week it was very obvious which female had chosen the male. At that point the barrier was removed along with the non receptive female/s. I made some great pocket money from them. Boiled egg yolk works well for the early fry stages.

Great video. I used to raise bettas many years ago in the 60’s. I used a five gallon tank and fed the fish well with chopped up earth worms or tubiflex worms for several days before I introduced the male and female. The day before I introduced the fish, I raised the water temperature to 82 degrees. I also used a special liquid conditioner for raising bettas that I bought at the pet shop. That worked well for me. I raised micro worms to feed the fry for several days after they hatched.

I was taught a method of breeding that I feel is slightly different and certainly less stressful on the fish. 1) You have to have a way to observe the sides of the female when they are introduced. As such, I used clear containers so I could view things from the sides and not just from the top. You hafta be able to see when the females display vertical bars (ready to mate)... and also if they start displaying horizontal bars (stress). 2) You add java moss/plants/other items in addition to the almond leaf and floating bit for bubblenesting so there's more hiding places for both if the pair isn't interested and the post-mating chase-away of the female so the male is less likely to kill her. Yeah, it's a little harder to catch them that way, but it is also more safe and healthy for the breeders. 3) You give the male a full week of living in the space so he is comfortable and "confident" in the territory and allow them to build their nest. If he's not nesting very much or very large it might be a sign he's not ready which is why this part is important. During this time you further condition the female and can even show her to him from the side of the tank by placing their clear containers side-by-side. 4) After a week you add the female in the divider and you watch and wait for several days. The female has to be displaying vertical bars for at least a full day before releasing her in with the male. If -either- of the fish show horizontal barring, you separate and try again after a week or two because they are stressed and won't mate... or try a different female with the male. 5) Once together, you monitor every few hours so that when they are done breeding, the female doesn't eat the eggs and the male doesn't kill the female. Another important element is ensuring there's no strong wind movement over top, cold air or aggressive water movement across the surface of the water as this can injure the delicate lungs of the betta fry and even kill them. My experience was that they can be delicate. So anything you add to the water, do so very gently. NGL, watching him just splash them into their grow-out tank gave me heart palpitations! XD

I'm curious about the Black and White breeding. For those that don't know, black Siamese fighters carry what we "old school breeders" call the "death gene" where very few if any, fry survive from such breedings. I hope that the white genes rule it out. Let me know how you go. Also, the "egg spot" can be a great guide, has certainly served me well during my time with fighters, but remember that young males can also show an "egg spot".

Depends on the type of black fish. If its a melanistic black (which his does appear to be indicated by the sort of velvety black with no blue irrodescence Non melanistic blacks are descendants of cornflower or turquoise blue fish from decades ago.) then you never breed it to another fish that also carries the same melanistic gene. You can breed "almost" any other fish to one that carries said gene and it will be fine.

Very, very informative video! 👍I tried Betta breeding 15yrs ago and remembered the only source of info was from discussion forums; even travelling to Bangkok's Chatuchak to try to get some tips. I think this video just explains what is needed. Great Video!
