Breeding Fruit Flies in an Airtight Jar With Plants

Is it possible to breed fruit flies in an airtight closed ecosystem? In this video I show you how I put some fruit flies in a jar, together with enough food to sustain the population for a while. Since this is an airtight jar, the flies need a source of oxygen, which is provided by the plants I added to the closed ecosystem as well. Is this a viable way to keep fruit flies as pets? We'll see...
Enjoy!

I remember we were doing hereditary traits in college, in biology. We were breeding fruit flies and in order to check them under a microscope we had to knock them out with ether, in order to inspect under a microscope. The container they were in had a little sponge and we used to SOAK it in ether and a lot of them would still wake up and fly away. My teacher was saying how 10 - 15 years prior, they would put 2-3 drops on the sponge and they had a hard time keeping them alive. In one decade our fruit flies adapted and evolved to be able to withstand a chemical meant to kill them, and are now able to pretty much handle it without issues. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Biology is amazing.

Had a similar genetics course in college. One of the batches of fruit flies was apparently much more delicate than usual because we came in one day and all but one jar for that strain had completely died out. It threw off the entire project because now every group had to use the offspring from that jar to cross breed and there weren't enough for every group to get multiple flies. So some groups only got one and had to pray that it would mate in the jar before dying.

Here in tennessee we have a vine that makes berries. What if someone got it growing in a jar and it makes berries in there. Ya think it could suit the fruit flies longer? Also wild strawberries stay small. So in a big enough jar you can have 2 things sustaining them
@VioletWings1353
@VioletWings1353 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea in theory. My concern would be needing a pollinator for the vines to produce berries. Unless you try pollinating by hand. This sounds like something that would be interestingly fun to try!
@LifeinJars
@LifeinJars 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah like violetwinged said, you won't get berries without pollination, so the challenge would lie in finding a suitable pollinator that can also survive in the closed ecosystem.

@@jessicar4873 That is a cool idea, but even the tiniest butterflies wouldn’t work. They are too delicate and rely too much on year-round flowers and fresh air. Many other smaller, tougher bugs (tiny beetles and/or flies) would be better. A completely sealed 30+ gallon tank would be amazing!

I've been raising wingless fruit flies for two years, using the same culture dozens of times over. The culture has gone through two genetic bottlenecks, where only 3-5 individuals propagated the population, and survived just fine. They're still reproducing right now, although horribly inbred. Fruit flies give a new meaning to "resilience".

@@ChrisPBacon-jl7oc they were wingless to start with, but interestingly, I've found very few changed traits. The dark colored banding on their abdomen has become thicker. The middle of their thorax is white or tannish, and the top of the thorax near the head is dark. Interestingly, a good portion of the population has no dark banding at the top of the thorax. Some of their bodies are twice as long as other flies, and some have completely white bodies, although that's probably a result of recent pupation. I'll isolate a few white individuals to see if it's really because their exoskeletons are still hardening, and I'll keep observing for more variation in the population. I'll also isolate a few different banded individuals to see if I can further express that trait in their offspring Aside from color and slight size differences, they're acting completely normally. The intense inbreeding and low genetic diversity hasn't really had much of an effect on them. They still breed quickly, and pupate just as quickly as when I first got them.

i had an antipathy against flies, especially fruit flies (because they always try to steal my food) and pigeons (because in Berlin they behave super weird like walking in circles like robots, but more senseless, without purpose). I asked life why and it convinced me otherwise, I saw a pigeons nest on my friends glass balcony and the baby pigeons were super cute and ugly, so i like pigeons now. I watched flies for several hours when I was depressed lying in bed and observed their flying patterns, I am convinced now that they are all scientist that commit their life and power on studying the effect of crashing into glass repeatedly. I waited for a sign to stop yelling at fruit flies and that’s it!!! so thank u! looking forward to the next update!

I wonder if the 100 percent humidity interferes with the transpiration of some of the plants. Some plants exclusively use evaporation combined with capillary action to draw nutrients from the soil and up into the leaves. No ability to evaporate water stops this completely. Other plants actively pump water in at their root systems and pressurize their fluid transport at the expense of actively using energy to do it. I haven't studied small plants much, but trees that only use evaporation and capillary action are limited in height to about 10 meters (less as average humidity increases). Some trees have a root pressure of about 6 atmospheres. I think it would be interesting to monitor the CO2 levels in the jar over a daily cycle. At night the plants consume oxygen and give of CO2 the same way fruit flies do. I wonder if some plants are more sensitive to CO2 toxicity at night than others.

Great idea, but I can think of a longer lasting and less messy version. Many small flies in the family Lauxaniidae feed on rotting plants as larvae, and many species can be found in the Netherlands. You could just make a normal lush terrarium, with plenty of small plants, mosses, dead plant material and dirt. Unfortunately, the only reliable way to catch them is individually, by hand.

fruit flies are used a lot in evolutionary research because they breed new generations very quickly. The problem all the experiments reach, however, is they dead end due to genetic deficiency. They can, however, get many generations out of the fruit flies before they hit that dead end, leading to some good science. I don't think there's a real risk with the flies in the jar, He's not trying to breed them to a certain trait. They'll likely last as long as the resources last.

I was working in a Drosophila lab for my PhD and - out of interest - started catching Fruit Flies in my backyard and brought them to the lab. I ended up with about 10 different species successfully maintained in the lab for more than 1.5 years (I left then, but they might still be maintained). The starter population sometimes consisted of only one pregnant female, so there was inbreeding from the beginning, but I could maintain most of the populations without larger difficulties

Great idea and very cool! I sure wouldn't want them flying around my house. Maybe I could try storing the jars in my neighbor's house! : )

Every week I was making a new colony (peanut butter jar size) of these guys for my Ghost Mantis babies. Brown banana mushed up, dried potato flakes, a few grains of dry yeast and water to loosen with a pinch of excelsior sitting on top. I used mesh lids so I never had the mold problem.

That should be Drosophila melanogaster as there are no black dots on the wings

Drosophila funebris does not have black dots on the wings either. There are other species that have though, like Drosophila suzukii.

I've had my own personal jar doing good for a couple months now. So many new things have appeared. The only ones I added intentionally were isopods, millipedes, snails, and springtails (caught by hand, not fun). So many more thing have came out since I closed it off though. I've seen mold mites, nematodes, and many mystery bugs.

What do the snails eat currently and at the beginning? Did you give them a little food? I own snails and dont think my kind could live without human like foods? Ig they could eat dead creatures

Omg your fly story reminded me that I once saw a HUGE fly die near my balcony and its belly was open and it had larvae coming out. I thought they were eating it (maybe they were) but I didn’t realize they were the babies back then. Lol. Weird memory..

Hi there! I absolutely love your channel and find this kind of thing fascinating, and have made a few eco spheres of my own! I however am looking for a bigger jar for a new one from my local pond, and I wanted to ask where you got the jar that you used in this video? Thanks!

I had a tank with isopods in, in the summer fruit flies multiplied so fast that I sealed the top of the tank overnight and I woke up and everything had died, all the isopods and all the fruit flies. I've never seen so many fruit flies. Learnt my lesson there, I didn't think they'd die that quick being so small. But I was wrong

We had a massive fruitfly infestation at one point because of my pet roaches, something I fed them had contained fruitfly larvae or cocoons and they really loved the conditions in the boxes :I I've been avoiding feeding baby food to my roaches since the larvae seemed to especially love that, after a day or two the tiny lid where the food was was filled with larvae, they were just casually swimming in the baby food.

A few years ago my mother got some peaches from a local orchard to can. The people running the sales counter didn't let her pick out the peaches herself and gave her some in a black trash bag. the next day the house was filled with fruit flies and itTurns out the peaches were very green and bruised but mom persevered and canned what she could. After some time went by I went to get one of the jars and saw a full grown fruit fly swimming around inside the sealed jar!! Needless to say we ended up not eating any of the peaches.

I've done this before, only I kept opening the jar to give them more fruit and that lead to them escaping into the house... I'd love to get some of those wingless fruit flies they sell and try raising those in a jar

maybe having an ecosphere with aphids feeding on plants and producing honeydew could support fruit flies 🤔
