These are sold in the States as Sea Monkys. I had some as a child but forgot about them for months. I went to check the jar one day and they were everywhere, breeding and consuming algae.
@jackb.nimble8264 жыл бұрын
As soon as I saw the title of this video I thought about Sea Monkeys. I had some as a kid and didn't realize they still sold them. For those of you who never heard of them, "Sea Monkeys" was (is) a ready-made kit sold in toy stores. It had everything you needed to start a brine shrimp habitat. The container it came in was the actual jar where they lived and had little magnifying lenses built right in so you could see them better. heh, good times.

I had a sea monkey farm once, the little ones you could buy at stores. I was a dumb kid and added everything at once, eggs, food, all of it. They hatched and died in just a day, so I thought. I left it on my windowsill anyway because it was pretty watching the algae grow that had turned the container green and lush in a couple weeks. Almost a month later I went to toss it out and noticed little specks, brine shrimp! Somehow, some eggs must have laid dormant and hatched after the algae grew. These shrimp also grew way past the advertised 3mm and some got up to one centimeter in length. I'll never forget that strange accident, and this reminds me of it.
@Cgraseck5 жыл бұрын
I culture them by adding micro algae fertilizer (very low in Cu) to salt water along with a micro algae starter. Once the water turns green I add either cysts of freshly hatched brine shrimp. This is a good way to grow adults but they will eventually clear the water and run into a starvation situation. It is really hard to keep them in a balanced ecosystem. They almost always strip out all the algae and then starve. Good Luck, Chris

@Togmot5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you need to add predators or parasites to cull the shrimp numbers before they eat all the algae.
@sergeantsonso34902 жыл бұрын
@@LifeinJars you need a population of predators in there, as well as crevices that only the brine shrimp can hide in. so the predators can manage the populations of the brine shrimp, then reproduce hopefully as the mature adults die out from either starvation and/or other natural causes, and then the brine shrimp can bounce back in equilibrium.

I’m totally hooked on your videos and you’ve inspired me to try these ecosphere jars with my kids to see what is in our local (Florida) ponds, puddles, lakes, oceans, and streams. We have a pond behind our home but Albert the alligator makes collection of water and substrate from it a challenge especially since he hates me for hitting him (accidentally) in the eye with a wad a bread when he refused to leave and let us feed the snapping turtles and fish. Every time he sees me, he comes straight at me and hisses. Currently he’s a baby and not big enough to actually not be stepped on by me if he comes close and we refuse to allow him to partake in our fish/turtle feeding adventures as he should fear us and not depend on us. Anyways love your channel!!

OK, you HAVE to start telling us about the music! I love all the pieces you play in the videos, but this one is particularly nice. Who are they? Anyway another great video, and yes, they ARE fun to watch. Someone gave me some as a kid back in the 50s when the Sea Monkey Craze first happened (I'm 70 now). Of course being a little kid I loved them, but I didn't know much biology, so they didn't last long. So I'm particularly enjoying this Jar! Keep up the great projects!

I tried something similar to this in a 10 liter cube with sand, wood, some shells and an airstone but I wanted to keep live plants with them to avoid water changes. So I did an experiment with lots of research. I found that Vallisneria Americana can tolerate 10 ppt salinity as highest and that artemia might be able to tolerate 10 ppt instead of 30-35. I slowly added the salt every day to my glass of Vallisneria to reach 10 ppt salinity and I kept the developing brine shrimps in 10 ppt. My experiment failed, the Vallisneria started rotting, the shrimp's water started smelling foul and groups of them died every day. Only 4 of them reached teenager age but very slowly, not under 7 days. Then they disappeared too. Now I'm repeating this (with the same, 6 months old, yellow water because I kept it) but with the normal 35ppt/1,026 SG salinity and the most important thing: with the addition of a macroalgae, caulerpa racemosa. I have high hopes this time! The babies have just hatched last night, I can't wait to see them swimming in their beautiful adult form in the "little ocean" I built for them. They don't live in oceans but that's what I call it.
