Hi I was watching the secret life of the zoo, and there was a little crab called Claude, I think he was a moon crab. But he was smaller than the Halloween one. And it had red eyes and legs. Do u know which species it could have been?

Do these crabs need a certain percentage of humidity? I bought one and that’s the only thing that I am still uncertain of. I bought a humidifier but I didn’t know if it would be safe to run for long amounts and if so, what percentage?
@Bmedeiros-youtube4 жыл бұрын
I mist their enclosure twice a day. Keeping it at around 60 to 80. Always keep the eco earth damp. And make sure they have full clean water dishes. That should also help with the humidity. Don’t let it get past 80 for very long. Or u might get mold. I’ve kept a group of them for about 4 years now.

Great video. Been keeping mine for about 4 years now. Mine are kept in a more presentation tank though. Cause they are one of my coolest looking pets in my opinion. Sadly. My giant day gecko has been slowing down. She’s pretty big and seems to be on her way out. :(

If you have a website link or can just upload to a free pic server and then post links here I'd love to see your setup. Or I can give you my skype or email address if you'd rather do that. Those crabs won't pinch you if you don't pinch them. Just hold them onto your open hand, and use your other hand above it to make sure they don't jump away. Their body is quite soft so it hurts them if you hold them like you did.

So what kind of light would I need for this crab and how much do they cost per year? I am thinking of getting one but what kind of light would I need for them to keep the heat at the temp they need and would I need a heating pad for them.
@TheRedlandReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Well, they are nocturnal so they don't specifically need UV lights but they do need an external heat source if you don't live in a tropical climate like I do. You can use the reptile heat lamps or under tank heat pad to keep them warm and humid. you can use a reptile thermometer inside the cage to ensure the temperature is 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit at all times.
@Frostancy4 жыл бұрын
Ok thank you.
@ProgressiveDiscussions2 жыл бұрын
That's limestone but it's good. They won't climb smooth surfaces. For those living in dryer conditions then they would have to burn a lot less holes to retain humidity since land crabs need the moisture to breathe.

This was immediately after getting this guy and I definitely continued to learn more about their care. Any folks who have asked, I have told them that they should ideally have more space and that this was a temporary bare minimum. Where did you get yours? And do you recommend housing 2 females or a male and female together as I’ve heard that they like to live in groups. And would just play sand work for them or do they need a mix of play sand and eco earth?
@TheRedlandReptiles5 жыл бұрын
I got them at my local reptile store, it's the first time they had them. Actually ended up getting a second crab after posting this video. I'm pretty positive it's a female. They kind of had a stand off for a few minutes and both went off to make their own tunnels. Have been getting along staying out of each others way since. Naturally, they are found in the mangroves. So I would say a mixture of eco earth and sand would be fine. I personally like how much water and humidity the eco earth holds. Hope that helps!
@black-kryptic85395 жыл бұрын
The Redland Reptiles Ok Thank you! And could you feed fish or night crawlers for a meat source?
@TheRedlandReptiles5 жыл бұрын
@@black-kryptic8539 yea it should be fine but always remember first, they are nocturnal so feed them at an appropriate time for that and second, always clean the food dish in the morning because anything uneaten can cause harmful molds and spores to grow.

@mummyix50613 жыл бұрын
You need saltwater and freshwater and they need to be easy to reach for the crab. Also get a heating pad or heating lamp
@spookscrew46515 жыл бұрын
I have some constructive criticism,this looks like bare minimum i have read that they need both salt and fresh water as well as atleast six inches or more of substrate(which you do not specify) so they can dig and burrow into the ground to molt.They also need a heating pad UTH and quite a bit of humidity.I have also read that they live longer and are happier with a crab of the opposite gender living along side them especially since moon crabs are a very social species and even share burrows with their kind.Its important when making these videos to specify specific things such as the humidity levels/heat levels,how much substrate,ect so that people don't neglect VERY important care information so their animal lives a happy life.How males cannot be kept together because they will fight to the death,proper enclosure sizes for one or multiple crabs and life span information.You could specify that they naturally eat fresh mango slices,fish,coconut so giving them fresh fruits and vegetables is important,and why its important to not leave the same food in the enclosure over a few days.The importance of water changes how you cannot use table salt as a salt water substitute and the fact that these crabs if properly taken care of will live mostly under the ground and how they can stay under for months to molt their exoskeleton.Why to NEVER try and dig them up because it could potentially kill them if they are in a molt.Most importantly that they will drown of their water dish is too deep because they cannot breath under water.Though i do like you're videos i would advise to redo this video to give the proper and full education on this animal as a pet not just typing to someone in the comments it would be better to do a complete care guide on these since there are not to many videos on these crabs out there.I look forward to seeing you're channel grow! :D

I have no problem admitting that you are absolutely correct. I definately plan on making another video on these guys. I now have upgraded to a bigger tank and have a female for him as well. And yes, I have 2 different water dishes and mist the tank when it looks dry. I do live in south florida though and inside my garage I have a seperate AC unit to regulate the temperature. The humidity comes naturally here so I just monitor it with a hydrometer and mist as needed. But yes, you are correct, and made excellent points. Thank you for your input. Now I just need some time off to make the next video. 👍😉
