I own several Breitling watches, and applaud the new version of SuperOcean! Unlike many Swiss brands which hardly ever try out new designs, I think this design pops! If it doesn't sell then Breitling can always go back to its old design. I believe this new model will appeal to the new generation of collectors. Kudos to Breitling for designing something brand new!

Proud owner of the black version, the watch is extremely accurate. Inside movement gets you less power reserve then expected at this price level but is never really an issue, it just keeps running as you wear it ;) Sits really well on the wrist too. Design is finally something that stands out while keeping a retro feel/look. Materials used are absolute top quality, very happy with it.

I think people getting upset about the movement in this watch is a little bit daft. The movement is a high grade COSC certified movement based on an ETA 2824-2. Breitling use a lot of high quality parts in the calibre 17. It’s a very easy movement to service and will cost considerably less for this very robust movement to maintain. Love the yellow dial on the super ocean 42, its superb. Great general review Bruce.

It's also regulated to chronometer specs AND it'll but MUCH cheaper to service when it's time than an in-house movement. That's the part that cracks me up about people who bemoan the movement. They want the in-house movement that will make the watch cost more and also cost more to service, then complain about those prices too.

Movement snob alert here... Seeing this on your wrist at the garage grill event got my cogs moving. LOVE no dates and I love boldness of color. If this watch was priced close to an Oris which (essentially) contains the same mvmt, I would be throwing my money at Breitling. I think the 300m comparison you make perfectly illustrates where the value propositions falls short. The 300m has a METAS certified movement, open case back, ceramic bezel, laser waved grain dial, 300m WR with saturation valve, and very strong brand cachet. Now I think the Breitling SuperOcean is beautiful, but I'm still battling my internal movement grinch. If one could have Superocean for $4100 on Bracelet and $3900 on rubber and I'm buying this thing tomorrow. It just hard for me to spend 5 grand on a two hundred dollar movement, but I am starting to see the light. Beautiful photography as always Bruce, you make that turquoise explode on the screen, you are an amazing artist.

I like the design. Very practical and functional as an actual diver, which I think sometimes gets forgotten with modern dive watches. The minute hand is highly visible and distinguishable from the hour hand and this helps the lume as well which is most important on the minute hand and bezel marker when diving. I own multiple breitlings, Rolexes, omegas and really like this version of the SO. While most will never dive with it that is the purpose of the design, and for others it is something unique that sets it apart from other watches and makes it interesting.

I am among those not loving the new generation. My favorite iteration is two generations back with the large italicized arabics. And no I do not believe that given only with the requisite passage of time all will necessarily become converts. Just as Mapplethorpe’s photography will always (rightfully) offend, so too will this generation of SO be forever objectionable. Yes, it is true that over time “more” will “grow” to accept this model. They will do so, however, not because their aesthetic taste has “risen” to the proper level such that they can appreciate what they initially had been missing, but rather any delayed adoration will have come from the weakening of their aesthetic resolve, the effort with which to maintain proving unsustainable over time such that the far easier course - the “growing to like it” path - proved an acceptable escape hatch from the burdensome task of holding true to one’s aesthetic values. I pledge to stay strong 👍🏻.

This is a watch that needs to be seen in person, and tried on wrist. The giant minute hand threw me off when I first saw it online, but this watch really impressed me in person. I actually loved the Navy blue 42mm on bracelet, and I also tried on the green 44mm on rubber strap, which fit my 7-1/4” wrist well also. I think the thinness, the quality of the bezel rotation feel, quick adjust clasp, and just overall build quality are there. Do I feel it’s maybe a touch overpriced? Maybe a bit, but not by a lot. I saw a video comparing this to Tudor and saying the build quality wasn’t nearly as good as Tudor. Tudor is great, but I think these are built quite well. Anybody knocking these needs to go try them on. I will say I wish the movement was a little higher end. I truly don’t care about in house at this level, and I did read that Breitling said they needed to be able to get a high quantity of movements, and this allowed to do that. I do wish they had used a current SW300 base, as my understanding (from what another brand told me) is Sellita is only delivering the newer 56hr power reserve version of those at this point. I care more about power reserve than in-house. Getting a full 2 days off wrist isn’t quite the 70 or 80 hours of some brands, but it is certainly better than 1 day. Sinn and some other brands are using these now. I do appreciate that they are using a COSC movement. It would be a deal breaker for me if it wasn’t COSC at this price. While I agree that the Omega SMP is a great watch from a technical and movement standpoint, the things you pointed out do bother me. I hated rotating the bezel, the Helium escape valve is ugly, and the bracelet is not only bulky, but dated looking. The only other wish list item would be to have a date option at the 6 o’clock, but I know a lot of enthusiasts like no date. Finally, I don’t think it is fair to characterize this release as not popular. I tried these on at my AD in August. They had a few empty spots, but in general had the sizes and types I wanted to try on. By the time I went to show my wife the model in early November, the new Super Ocean section was wiped out except for an orange 36mm on strap. It looked like a Rolex display (also at this same AD)! I was bummed I couldn’t show one to her on my wrist. Navitimer, Chronomat/Chronomat GMT, Top Time, and all the other models were filing the display cases. The sales guy even told me the new Super Ocean is quite popular. Maybe it’s only popular here in Texas, but I can’t imagine tastes vary that much regionally.

As a big fan of Breitling and big heavy mechanical watches I have used Breitling divers, Superocean A17040, A17360, A17390 as daily driver for work, travel and leisure for 20+ years. I recently went to my local retailer to look at the Superocean 44 (now discontinued) and I got put off trying it with the rubber strap, stainless is my preference, I was tempted but I wasn't impressed enough by the stainless steel bracelet to part with my cash. Other than what's left of the Avenger series Breitlings are no longer the "Instruments for Professionals" they used to be. Their new Breitlight watches are just embarrassing to an old Breitling fan as me. The Superocean series is heading the same way. There was a time I loved the design of almost everything in their collection - It seams like Breitling and me have grown apart, there is not much in their current collection that appeals to me (but the Chronomat with the UTC is cool). I suppose watch collectors and influencers buy more watches that those of us that buys a high end daily driver every 7-10 years. I just can't help thinking that sometimes change is not needed. There is plenty of watches out there with new bold designs, no need the Superoceans to join this club! 35 years ago I had a Submariner now I'm thinking of getting another one...

I could agree with some commenters, this is not an "only watch", it's a watch within a collection. As an only watch, one might want something more conventional. As a watch within a collection, this is something different and fun. I'm interested in the turquoise dial in 44mm too, it would be different color than my other watches. When I first saw it online, I disliked the weird square on the minute hand. Since then, the look of the whole watch has grown on me. Haven't seen it in-person yet, but will go see it soon. The big rehaut might look strange to some, but I like how the black numbers and markers take on shiny appearance against the white background under certain lighting. Some also don't like the small-ish dial? I kind of like a smaller dial, over one that is too big and has lots of "empty space". As to the price, I'll for sure try to get a discount, if I end up buying one.

Love your series of videos covering the new SuperOcean -- well done, so thank you! Like many others, I was a little perplexed when I saw the first renderings of this in the spring, believing the design was strange and had fallen short of expectations. However, when the Kelly Slater LE version caught my eye I had a difficult time not seeking more information on that and the other models. The story of the Slow Movement is compelling and I have to hand it to Breitling on a bold and compelling design, including harkening back to the family B instead of the winged B. To be honest, the previous generation SuperOcean never did anything for me with the very large numbers and the textured bezel. However, I'm sold on this and just picked up the Kelly Slater version. Agreed, it is too expensive (though $500 from the Slater version goes to Ocean Protection), but I paid, just the same, and hope to eventually pick up the black on bracelet.

Can't see how this can be competitive. You nod to Omega several times. And you are right to do so. The designs are definitely better than before. Its just not at the right price point. This cannot cost more than the Oris Aquis 400. A stronger brand but lesser internals so lets say they balance eachother out. Materials are the same with a small advantage to Aquis. A sapphire back is more expensive than a steel caseback. Design is subjective. Still there is nothing interesting on the back of the Breitling. I'd choose the Aquis 400 even if the Superocean would cost the same. The Seamaster is an another league.

Tudor is a very bad brand because it’s “poor man’s Rolex”, and Rolex itself violates human rights so for any sane person it’s a dead brand. In house itself isn’t necessary better than other time proven movements heavily modified by Breitling to COSC standard. In house for the most part is just marketing and manipulation. Today Breitling is experiencing renaissance as it was 20-15 years ago when it was the most desirable brand for most rich men. I agree it costs about 1K too much, but I don’t really see the alternative, except just buying less expensive watches and enjoying them, and there are very good options for 1/5 of the price of this Breitling.

I actually quite liked this in person. Case, clasp, bracelet is a big step up…my main gripe isn’t the dial, it’s the bezel…on the one in store there was a crazy amount of play

I like Breitling's general style. But they are just so poorly priced. If they were 30% less and so competing in a lower segment. They would be very nice watches. But here in the UK at least. You would never buy one at list price in an AD. Not without that 30% discount. They are just over priced, and most watch people know it. You can't compare this type of watch with an Omega. Design or movement wise (especially the latter). I bought an Omega Aqua Terra a year ago and got a very nice 15% discount, and it's a brilliant watch to this day. For a Breitling therefore I would want 45% off list to be anywhere near it... Don't think I can get that. So it's a shame, as aspects of the new designs appeal. But they need to seriously review the bloated price structure frankly.

Thanks for the review, but it's a no go for me. Definitely a "collection" piece. What I mean by that, is that this watch is for someone who needs something a little different to set off the redundancy of their watches. Even the new black model is a bit too "out there" for me. That said I stumbled upon this video because my local Breitling boutique still has one previous model 42 in black. They have had that thing in their case all year, if they have it come income tax(that's daddy's play time fun money lol) then I might purchase it. I just don't know about the $4200 that I'm sure the boutique will not budge on.

I’ve tried this on and have to say it sits beautifully on wrist , think it is a well crafted lovely piece .. couldn’t bring myself to buy , Cmon Bruce are you kidding ? 5 grand for a selita movement is a joke … 38 power reserve 0ff the shelf .movement 2 grand overpriced .. why such a blatant cash grab ..?

Minute hand is obnoxiously large, no counter balance on the seconds hand, chapter ring seems unnecessary and makes the dial look tiny, non in-house movement, and the MSRP lol. I like Breitling but this ain’t it. There are MUCH better options at this price and even $1-2k cheaper!
@waynedennett90642 жыл бұрын
I actually quite like the design, i do think the second hand should have a sq lume pit to match everything else and i do think its expensive given the moment. You can buy a Sellita or Eta based 300 metres watch for a lot less

True but not a certified chronometer with this level of finish in this killer of a design
@watchroll33107 ай бұрын
I think the reason why breitling is using a sellita is because their name is big enough for the regular consumer that doesn't know about watches to still sell a lot. Is more profitable and they can get away with it.

Outrageous? Why? Becouse you are fanboy? I held it in hands, this watch like many of new breitling watches looks and feels like cheap trash.

@@Mpantiques has nothing to do with being a fanboy and everything to do with reality, while you seem to base everything on your bias, emotions. For under 6K this is an awesome, sexy time piece.

Brietling is not even on my radar. If they had even one watch that could hold my interest longer than a minute, it would be different, I suppose. I guess the Super Ocean comes close, but it just reminds me of every other brand. 🤷🏻♂️

I love the colours of the new super ocean but like a lot of people the price tag stops me pulling the trigger. Also I love the blue but in my experience white and silver hands on a pale blue dial are not very legible in certain light.

Not a fan of the new superoceans and specially the new case backs . I much prefer the super ocean II with there busy dials and just a more toolish robust look compared to this.
