How many people here see a Brendan Miller video pop up and just automatically click on it? Me. Fishermen today are sooo spoiled! I remember the old old stuff my grandpa had to use in the 60's when they were poor as church mice and had to fish for their supper. Steel rods, wooden plugs (they were called plugs back then) and braided dacron lines. The water sprayed off the line when they would cast or retrieve. They still managed to catch some whopper pike and muskies and big stringers of perch and pickerel too. I also remember the family fish fry Sunday dinners too!😊

The date of this reel is a 1966. The EE on the side is the date code. Also fill that reel up to 1/8 of an inch of the outside of the spool with line and it will cast much much better and retrieve much faster! Great video and keep them coming.

The Heddon River Runt “Spook” refers to the fact that it was made in plastic, originally the River Runt was made in wood. BTW- both versions and many Heddon lures are collectibles. Some of the plastic “Spook” versions can be very valuable for rarer colors. Yours was perfect bc it was in used condition and perfect for fishing. They catch fish now just as good as they did new. I love old gear and much of it was actually made in the USA which is why it’s still around today. Great job on your video and you kept pushing on no matter what obstacles you ran into! The success!! Awesome. Love to see more like this, maybe go back by decades fishing a setup from each--well....on second thought that might get expensive eventually as the gear becomes more and more valuable and collectible (of course depending on the make/model/condition).

I do like that he uses new line on it. I used an old reel I got from the flea market with ice fishing braided line which was the closest I could use to the original line that was used on the reel and it kinda sucked. This was like 1992 so the reel was only $20 and my dad had an old rod up in the rafters in the basement. I got one trout on iit and I gave up on it.

Sixty years ago I fished with my old uncles who only used bait casting reels paired to spring steel rods. Their rods were spooled with braided Dacron line. It was extremely limp line that made the bait casting experience more tolerable. I never developed the knack for casting those old school reels. When technology advanced to the point of the free spool bait casting I splurged and bought a Daiwa Millionaire 3HM in 1977. It casted like a dream with no backlash. Still have that reel and it still gets the job done. As an added note: You can buy a replacement metal ferrule to fix that problem. A friend of mine built a new bait casting rod using a metal ferrule made of aluminum.

The best way for increasing line return is take a wine cork of larger diameter and put it on. With a decent auger or drill bit to make a diameter close to the reel spool, drill out the from the top to bottom, not the side. Slice the cork in two, lengthwise and then you can just wrap tape on like fishing line. Works well to get that old but modern feel and appeal.

son when you use those old reels like that use black threaded line about 10 -15 lb. test it is heavy duty thread and does not coil up or rat nest like nylon monofiliment line does.and to fix that vintage rod just take a hack saw and cut just below the metal shank rim to square it off the remove the broken piece off the insert with pliers and if you have enough space on the bottom female end apply a coat of black gasket maker to the male end and insert and wipe off excess gasket material of with a rag and let sit overnight.you can buy the tube of gasket maker at napa or any other auto parts store. i like your content and i subscribed i too collect vintage fishing gear and i was born and raised in dowagiac michigan the home of heddon lures and fishing gear .i have a lot of those river runts you used in this video .in all 55 years of my age collecting these i dont have anything modern .

The lures you referred to as “plugs” are actually Heddon River Runts. I use river runts, they are very effective! I have many “vintage” lures by Heddon that I use. I also favor early to mid 1960’s Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000’s.

Shakespeare's model and date codes can be confusing because of the way they worded them. Model EE on the side of the reel is the date code. That's actually a Model 1924, the EE refers to the year it was made, which was in the 1960s. It's hard to make out, but in the writing above the date code where it says Direct Drive, etc., it should say No. 1924, maybe No.1924MS, meaning Mono Spool, referring to the actual model of reel.
@ddselvig
@ddselvig 3 жыл бұрын
The reel is actually more modern than what your research led you to believe. What you have there is the 1924MS (monofilament spool) model. Monofilament line didn't exist in 1924. The 1924 in the name is not indicative of the year the reel was made. If you look closely you will see where it says "Model EF". The EF is the year code for that model. The EF date code translates to the year 1965, the date that model came out. Just thought you would like to know a little more info about this reel. I really liked this video. Keep making more of them.

It's hard to cast with that reel because (1) it isn't lubricated and (2) there is not enough line on it. And the rod handle/reel mount are balanced so that the reel handle is pointing upward not horizontally when casting overhead. Sharpen the hooks on the old lures. Dull rusty hooks do more damage to the fish and then they get off. Looks like a decent rod, length and action, except that corroded brass ferule -- replace it.

Old baitcaster reels were spooled with braided dacron line, not monofilament. Braid will cast a lot better with decent diameter (dacron would have been a lot thicker than modern poly line for the same test line.) Monofilament will backlash too easily and also catch behind the spool cheeks on old reels. Best to understand what what was actually done if you want to imitate the older ways.

I wonder if you could find a breakdown for it.. take it apart clean it up.. maybe replace some parts if you can.. if you could get that thing running smoother.. but ya its so old.. and if you break it.. its probably better to just fix the pole and keep it as a old combo.. people buy stuff like that just for display. nice vid.. I am the same way with vintage / classic / old school things. Things were built to last, made to be user serviced and relatively easy to do so, and I really just don't like the modern aesthetic of most things these days. Theres lots of great technological advancements today, but things used to look so much better. Modern fishing reels have absolutely nothing to offer me, they generally aren't made to last and none of the features or advancements in them matter to me. I don't need a dozen ball bearing infinite anti reverse or an ultralight high speed gear ratio. Silent anti reverse is nice, but I can live with clickers. I'll use modern lures, but that's about it.
