These albums are personal to me. They led to how I discovered some of my favorite bands and ultimately some of my all-time favorite albums. But it’s the stories behind the albums, the nostalgia, that makes these all hold a special place in my heart and ultimately are the Album That Changed My Life.

Great stuff here! The album that really got me into the genre was GNR's "Use Your Illusion II". I remember going to the movies to watch Terminator 2 and when I heard the song "You Could Be Mine" I thought : I have to get that! I asked my mom to buy the cassette and I was immediately hooked. Others that came in my top ten are AC/DC "The Razor's Edge", WASP "The Crimson Idol", Ozzy Osbourne "No More Tears", Jon Bon Jovi "Young Guns II".

Loudness: Thunder in the East. Akira Takasaki is my favorite guitarist of all time. Every time people are talking about great guitarists I always bring him up. Twisted Sister: Stay Hungry. I knew every lyric to those songs and I would use my bed as a stage and sing every song. Queensryche: Empire. Geoff Tate is my third favorite singer right behind Freddie Mercury and Elvis Presley. When I moved from Texas to Oregon it was the only CD I listened to during the whole drive. All of these and more bring back some great memories.

My very first album as a 9 year old birthday present was 'Back In Black'. From there it was Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms' on tape (1985 xmas present), Bon Jovi 'Slippery When Wet', Van Halen '5150', Poison 'Look What The Cat Dragged In', Cinderella 'Night Songs', Def Leppard 'Hysteria', Motley Crue 'Girls, Girls, Girls' and GNR 'Appetite For Destruction'. Amongst many others. But thinking back it really was 'Slippery When Wet' as a 14 - 15 year old. Need that time machine to go back to 1986 - 1990 Brendon. Simpler times.

Kansas: Song For America Supertramp: Crime Of The Century Bought these two for the album covers. I was someone who liked general rock/pop/radio hits. These two albums kindled my love for prog rock, and took me away from just following what was on the radio. Kansas and Supertramp are still my two favorite artists. Steely Dan: Aja This one scratched my jazz itch while still getting some rock with it(I grew up listening to my dad constantly listening to jazz, liked it). Steely Dan is my 3rd favorite(or sometimes 4th)artist, trading places with the next artist/album. Dire Straits: Debut. I heard " Down To the Waterline " on an FM station that played album deep cuts. thought it was cool. Two days later, heard " Sultans Of Swing "...I was hooked, Dire Straits was so different than the " popular " music at the time, which appealed to me. Dire Straits is my 4th favorite(or 3rd) artist Billy Joel: The Stranger Love this one because it led me to his albums " Turnstiles " and " 52nd Street ", timeless music Styx: " Paradise Theater " My sentimental favorite Styx album, a concept album that mostly works, and led me to their excellent run of albums in the mid-70s that started with " Equinox " through " Paradise Theater " Al Stewart: " Time Passages " This one led me to " Year of The Cat ", and the rest of his catalog...interesting music, all kinds of styles, his songs based on historical events/figures are fascinating, a great story teller Jethro Tull: " Aqualung " This one led me to the Tull catalog, an endless fascination with Tull/Ian Anderson, and further down the prog rock highway. King Crimson: " In The Court Of The Crimson King " This album really confirmed that prog rock was my favorite genre, and led me to the rest of the KC catalog Boston: Debut. This album is still a constant listen for me, when I want just good, hard rock, well performed. And " Foreplay/Long Time scratches my prog itch Honorable mentions: Pink Floyd--" Dark Side Of The Moon "...which led me down the Pink Floyd catalog Heart: " Dreamboat Annie ", which led me to a lifelong enjoyment of Heart(and a lifelong crush on the Wilson sisters) ELO: A greatest hits compilation called " Ole ELO ", which led me to the rest of the ELO catalog

Another great topic! You picked some good ones. 80's metal fan here. Off the top of my head, I'd say Ratt - Out of the Cellar, Scorpions - Love at First Sting, and Def Leppard - Pyromania. I first heard these on late night 98 Rock - Baltimore on my vintage Walkman lol. Then probably Iron Maiden - Live After Death and Judas Priest - Live (Turbo era). Waxie Maxie's was our local music store. This is when I really started collecting cassettes and getting into heavier stuff. I was a bad influence too on my younger brother lol. He kept stealing my tapes!

I'm 45 years old, and I still regularly listen to those wonderful hard rock CDs that indelibly marked my years between 1989 and 1992, wonderful years, we were lucky enough to experience them when we were teenagers. Now we are over forty, but our thoughts are always turned to those years. Maximum respect from me, from a completely different part of the world.

I'm in my 20's and I'm already nostalgic for the music I listened to 5 years ago, 10 years ago, it's so much more meaningful to me now. I can't imagine what another 20 years of marinating on music that means everything to me will do, especially now that I'm graduated and have disposable income to discover new artists in person (streaming is fantastic and I'm very grateful for it, I'm sure most people in their 40s wish they had their artists so readily available back then!!) But as I'm sure you know, nothing in the world beats hearing it live, or secondarily, listening to it on disc vs a compressed stream.

Great stuff! Here's one for me: I was in Jr. High jazz band in Colorado in 1971, and our instructor/director, Mr. Nichols, would bring in albums now and then and share music with us. I still remember being awestruck the day he brought in the debut album from Emerson, Lake & Palmer. He played "Tank" from that record, with Carl Palmer's amazing drum solo. I was already a drummer but hearing Tank gave me a new level to go for. As time went on I became obsessed with ELP, and saw the Brain Salad Surgery tour in Anaheim after we moved to California, my first concert. That album sounds like magic to me still.

I saw Twisted Sister in 84 on the Stay Hungry tour. It was an outdoor show on the Pier on the west side of Manhattan. Ratt and Lita Ford opened. It was at the peak of their popularity and the show was sort of a homecoming party for a local NY band made good. The atmosphere was electric and Dee Snider was an amazing front man. They all bust their asses to put on a memorable show. To be frank, the show they put on was far better than their music would indicate.

Great video! Loved hearing all the stories attached to these albums! Also does my smf heart good to see Twisted Sister on your list.... even though Stay Hungry is my favorite, Love Is For Suckers is a great underrated album! A few of mine: KISS - Destroyer..... started it all for me Bon Jovi - Crush....my first Bon Jovi album, has to include something from the group I consider my favorite band! Van Halen - Fair Warning.... even though I had the debut first, hearing this album and specifically Mean Street blew my 13 year old mind and made VH, at the time, my new favorite band! Twisted Sister - You Can't Stop Rock N Roll... Stay Hungry was my first album, and still my favorite, Under the Blade has my all time favorite TS song, but this album cemented TS as my new favorite band at the time, I was 14, and for the next year and a half, Twisted Sister was untouchable for me, right band at the right time! Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Lose.....Foos opened me up to 90s and newer music at 16, whereas before I was only listening to classic 70s and 80s bands, such a peaceful, melodic, yet heavy alt rock album and one of my all time favorite albums Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up the Girl..... Goo Goo Dolls are a great pop rock band and Johnny is a fantastic song writer imo Collective Soul - Disciplined Breakdown..... another one of my favorite bands, the first album I got from them for $1 at the Salvation Army, it made me realize that this band who I was just starting to discover was a band I needed to get all their albums... The Hooters - Nervous Night..... the late 2010s was a weird time musically for me, I had stopped collecting cds because after all you can stream all this stuff now, I also had sorta reached a point where I wasn't getting into alot of band anymore, though I still loved music I was at a stand still and feeling stale, at work my brain was pumped full of boring radio hip hop pop songs enough to drive you insane... that is when I discovered The Hooters, though I knew their two big hits, I realized how much great music was hiding from me and I got back into cd collecting and I realized that streaming just isn't what it's cracked up to be Goo Goo Dolls - Chaos In Bloom.... just released last year, but after nearly a decade of subpar pop music from the pop rock masters of the 90s and 00s, I didn't think I'd ever get an album like this from them again, and it's an album that just hits me this day and age, reminds me why I love Johnny's writing so much Metallica - And Justice For All.... though it's no longer my favorite album by them, nor am I a huge metal head or anything, I'm more of a rock guy, but hearing this album back in the day really blew my mind

You were just a lad of 9 in 1985. I was 17. Just enough difference in years to shift some of the album choices. I have Afterburner, but Eliminator was more of a life changer for me. It still remains as one of my all time favorites. As far as Pink Floyd goes nothing beats The Wall in my journey. I know everyone cites Dark Side of the Moon as their best. It was their most commercially successful, but The Wall was a not too distant second. I absolutely love Hysteria. Their best album by far in my humble opinion. New subscriber, I enjoy this channel, too many KZbinrs out there are music snobs or 'purists', who think Glam Metal is trash, the only good albums are those with a bands original lineup, or hate anything that was mainstream or had commercial success. You seem pretty openminded, whether its Roth or Hagar, Rodgers on Howe, mainstream or obscure, etc, etc, you just seem to appreciate good music.

I didn't see the Burn In Hell video and eventually Pee Wee's Big Adventure Movie until I was an adult. Doctor Feelgood I got in cassette in 1991 at age 12. Classic Album!!! I also grew up with Hysteria, Stay Hungry, Metal Health, and Poison's hit songs. GNR AFD was my first hard rock/metal album at age 12-1991.

Hearing Dookie by Greenday when i was young, my sister owned it, but i did when she wasn't around, loved it, and still do to this day. The first band i became obsessed with at 12 was Zeppelin, i picked up the greatest hits of theirs after hearing WLL on the radio. It was Early Days & Latter Days, i have since picked up everything i could find by the band multiple times. They became my favourite band and still are 25 years later. Hearing Outshined by Soundgarden, Chris became my favourite rock vocalist. Wish you Were Here by Floyd was another album i loved & turned me into a huge fan. Hearing my mum playing & dancing around to T.Rex led me down the Bolan rabbit hole with great albums like Electric Warrior & Slider, such an imaginative lyricist. Hearing Shakin hands with the Holy Ghost by Blackberry Smoke on planet rock led me to my favourite modern band, seen them a few times, such a tight outfit who play snippets of theirs & my favourite older bands like sabbath & zep during their live gigs, their album Whipporwill is my favourite, great writing, excellent delivery. It's funny thinking about listening to that album years back as i walked my dog in the evenings , makes me happy & sad at the same time, happy that my dog is still here but sad that i can't walk anymore. Thanks for sharing your picks Brendon, have been enjoying the lists you have been posting the last few days. It has sparked listening ideas, keep em coming.

Wow...thank you for this comment Joe. I'm listening to Cosmic Dancer now from the album Electric Warrior, and read your words about not being able to walk right as the lyrics ' I was dancing since I was 8' popped up, followed by 'I danced myself into the tomb.' It can get so easy to be overwhelmed by the simple, small things, at the same time, those things can feel like the entire world. I'm so happy your dog is still with you. The passage of time is a bittersweet tea. I'll continue to check out the songs from your comment. But seriously, your comment reminded me to sing while I can, run while I can, dance while I can, no matter what anyone says, because no matter what, the next chapter will come.

awesome video. my mom was the one who got me into metal. My cousin was big into Bon Jovi and I wanted to be in metal too but I didn't want to copy him. Being a Christian, my mom told me about this metal band known as Stryper. So I went to mall with my mom and bought To Hell With the Devil and that lead me to the metal fan I am today!! now my mom regrets it, because that lead to guns n roses, poison and even Metallica lol.

Great list and it's just a reminder that everyone's taste is so different. Age might play a part in this, not sure Here is mine in order of when I discovered them... Kiss - Rock and Roll Over ( 1976) Deep Purple - Machine Head (1978) Black Sabbath - Master of Reality ( 1978) The Doors - Strange Days (1983) The Beatles - White Album (.1983) Metallica -.Kill'em All ( 1983) Bathory - The Return of the Darkness and Evil ( 1985) Iron Butterfly -.Ball ( 1988) Jefferson Airplane - Crown of Creation ( 1989) Love - Forever Changes ( 2001) Also , just wanted to Stay Hungry has also always had a special place in my heart. I remember playing the crap outta that album back in the day. Saw them on that tour ,thought they were awesome! Love pretty much all their output but Stay Hungry might be my favorite.

Oh of course age, what era you grow up in, who your friends were, if you have siblings…there are lots of influences that come into play. But that’s why I preferences the video with “My” because the list is unique to me. I almost added a Doors album to mine except the one that changed my live was the 2 CD Best Of and I wanted to include actual album over original material. Another Greatest Hits that changed my life was Journey’s but again I opted for Frontiers instead. I considered Led Zeppelin’s IV because that blew my mind at the time but I now find it so overplayed that I can’t enjoy it the same way. But yes, it’s all personal preference in the end.

I'm a kpop collector and I was randomly looking up ways to store my new jewel cases, since I didn't grow up with them! Kpop has helped me discover and get into so many other genres of music, including metal. I'd love to expand my collection to other genres (considering kpop is insanely expensive to collect than picking up local cds or vinyls), so this is a nice insight into what that hobby might look like--time consuming but fun. Music changes the shape of our lives in more ways than we can count, I hope to have my own body of work one day that touches even a couple people. Bless up from Jamaica

I’m a big fan of Grunge as well so it’s a love/hate relationship with it. But ultimately Grunge didn’t kill Glam Metal, the record labels, radio stations, media outlets stopped promoting it which killed it. They all dropped Glam Metal to chase the hot new trend Grunge. Had Glam Metal been backed it could have survived IMO. But was also no help that lots of the Glam Metal bands tried to jump on the Grunge bandwagon and make their version of a Grunge album. Things like that also contributed to the downfall of Glam Metal. I’ve made a video about this, see link if you’re interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXa7n32ppKyWkMU

me and my buddies in high school used to try to play our guitars to the songs on "Cosmo's Factory" by Creedence and "Are You Experienced" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and probably "Climbing" by Mountain. "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye still engages my emotions even today. "Disintegration" and "Ultra" by the Cure and Depeche Mode made me actually enjoy music that sounded very depressing to me when I first heard them. The "Woodstock" soundtrack and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Four Way Street" are my favorite live albums. "Smokin'" by Humble Pie and "Exile On Main Street" by the Stones are the best wild rock albums I've ever heard. "Miracles" by Change and "Belle du Jour" by St. Tropez are dance music that still makes me feel like dancing after I've taken my arthritis medicine.
