@CardboardAddict - Exactly. I think if Bret Hart would have stayed around in WWF a little longer, say like to till 2001/2002 at least, Triple H would have never defeated the Rock at Wrestlemania16(one of the dumbest political decisions ever!) One of the many reasons why I never liked nor respected Helmsley.

He couldn't do everything he could for rock being that rocky was just into his first year in the WWF when Bret was forced out. What he did for him though by not going over on him when shawn and hunter wanted him to was great. Hunter was especially jealous of rocky and it showed later when he became HgH. When Austin was on top going against Foley, taker and Kane, rocky leapfrogged over hhh to get to the top spot and never looked back.

Bret said, "this kid is going to be the greatest", when talking about the Rock in '97. Back then he was still called Rocky Maivia. That was before the catchphrases and the sunglasses. Bret saw something in him from the beginning.
@Eighties_Child
@Eighties_Child 2 жыл бұрын
Source, please? If Bret ever said that Rocky "the Blue Chipper" Maivia was "going to be the greatest," I can assure you that he most definitely was not referring to wrestling. Maybe the greatest comedian on the mic or something, but as a wrestler/worker? LOL! Not a chance. (By the way, if anyone ever says that they thought back in 1996 or 1997 that The Crock was going to be "great," they are lying through their teeth. NOBODY on the planet would have believed at that time that THAT dweeb was going to have a successful future. He absolutely *sucked* in the ring-so much so that the fans mercilessly chanted "Die, Rocky, die!" every time he made an appearance. The only way he was able to get over was by doing his stand-up comedy routines on a microphone and cocking his eyebrow. That's ALL he had.) The fact is, Bret has always said that Tom Billington (the Dynamite Kid) was and is the greatest wrestler of all time, although, as superb as DK was, I would have to say that the Hitman himself surpassed Dynamite. Curt Hennig and Ricky Steamboat are right up there too. But Duane Johnson isn't even in the same *galaxy* of the best professional wrestlers of all time, especially from a technical perspective. That's truly a comical notion.

Brett is one of the most respected wrestlers the fact that he saw so much potential in a young rock and took him under his wing says a lot. That's why Triple H and Shawn Michaels felt threatened they took offense to it they tried to stunt his growth. I think it was at the time where The Rock and Austin was supposed to face each other for the first time at Mania. They wanted to bury the rock but vince stuck to his guns and tild them to kick rocks and get over it.

Rock was still Rocky Maivia around this point and a bland babyface. This might have been sometime before or just after Wrestlemania 13 based on Rock's haircut. Austin and Rock didn't main event Mania for the first time until 1999, and Bret was long gone from WWE by that point.

@Telly Delucca Shawn's in-ring performance was great, sure... But that didn't give him the right to be the awful jackass that he was. And, as quickly as those guys praised Shawn, I almost guarantee that they would say that he was still a schmuck. AND, as pretty as the stuff Shawn did was in the ring, Bret was raised in the Dungeon. He learned wrestling inside and out from an early age. Bret is one of, if not THE, greatest technical wrestlers of all time. Shawn may have looked good doing "Sweet Chin Music" or doing jumps off the ropes or what have you, but Bret knew how to put holds on someone that both looked great and were practical, and he made sure that no one he put in those was seriously hurt.

Shame these two couldn’t have a series of matches during the attitude era. Bret would of stayed healthy and been badass for at least 5-10 more years.

Who would ever have tot that Rocky Maivia here back in 1997 as awkward as he was in this show n with zero experience in acting would eventually be an A-List Hollywood actor in not so distant future.

Yea it’s crazy. 3 years before he had no idea he’d be a WWF superstar and at the time of this interview he had no idea 4 years later he’d be a Hollywood superstar.. and as of right now no one knows, but in about 8 to 12 years he’s gonna be president of the United States lol

😆 Dini not playing coy at all...not mad. She had a hell of a career, and as of the day of this post is 76 years old and presumably enjoying retirement. One of the great tragedies of Bret leaving early is that he that he never got a prolonged feud with The Rock. But Bret's exit did push Rock up the ladder a bit quicker, so there's that. This is a really cool find...1997 is easily my favourite wrestling year ever, so any footage from that period that I missed is highly valued by me.

This was to promote the triple threat match between sycho sid, shawn and bret 3 days later at the skydome in toronto, but lol sid no showed even here, what a pity, his once chance to be on a talkshow and he blew it and wouldve been nice to see him and rock together for once , and theyre pretending everyone loves rocky here even before the rocky sucks chants were a thing.
