Because their traditions and values are toxic and his kind, and timid nature is seen as weak and pathetic to them, they treat him like trash because he's been a pushover for 30+ years who up until recently couldn't stand up to them. He started earning their worthless, conditional love when he began his brief career as a news anchor and then when he saved his brother's life. His father is the clear patriarch of the family but, his mother is no better, the bastards didn't even bother to raise him. They had their employees do it instead, which is literal child abandonment and neglect. Brett deserved better, both of his parents failed him and he has every right to hate them, instead he pines for their affection and they should be grateful he hasn't snapped and killed them all given that he has the means to do so. Brett's too good of a guy to actively hurt anyone, he's only killed/fought back either on accident or in self-defense, he's rarely the aggressor but, he has no trouble killing.

Brett's is basically a loyal dog...but if you expanded the traditionally derrogatory metaphor. He's fiercely loyal, is stupidly kind to those he bonds with, and to actual enemies he will be relentless, even when it will most likely end in disaster for him. Kick him and he whines, but threaten his "masters" (friends or superiors) and he powers through that same kick. All while yes he desperately needs validation from others, he gets it as much from personal praise as seeing his friends succeed. Praise him directly or show him his existence makes you a happier person, its all the same. Hell, the machine in this compilation was giving Brett "pets". He is a loyal dog...and a very good boi.

brett had such amazing character development, you can’t even notice that much of a change until you look back. at first he was a pushover to everyone, but slowly he changed and eventually no longer cared about even his family’s approval. he’s not dumb/nice for no reason, nor is he stuck up, even though you would expect him to be with his background. he is just an anxious person with a kind heart, with some aspects of him needing improvement and others staying the same. honestly i really loved his character, i think that the writers made him specifically to divert the expectations people had in mind. he’s relatable but in a believable manner, as he is still a cognito employee. gonna miss him and the show ngl.

Brett being a Yes-man is not healthy for him, but his friendship is often always genuine. Because of his time in Cognito Inc, he learned to stand up for himself. Also, Reegan made a friend that was not using her. He was always there for her. I kinda feel like Inside Job will End at Part 3 but that should be good, right? Reagan's dad had his little story arc where even after he got his place in the company back, his obsession to have it all caused him to lose everything. Pushed him to try and retcon the universe and yet it was never meant to be.

I ship him and Regan so much, I know many people prefer them to remain just friends because there are very few examples of male-female platonic friendships, and I respect that, but at the same time there are also very few examples of straight relationships that are not spoiled with useless gender-stereotyped dynamics and cliches. Brett and Reagan need eachother platonically, like I ship them as best friends but not as romantic partners, because they both are uniquely damaged individuals who would really need the other platonically. Reagan lacked someone to show her unconditional affection, was constantly shown and experienced horrifying thing’s as a child, having Brett who serves as a beacon of love and hope for Reagan. Brett is waiting for someone’s approval in order to feel secure, however, it turns out that he truly needs someone who appreciates his existence, and treats him like a person and not someone who has to do stuff in order to have value, they both are best friends because not only because they are healthy, but because they both subconsciously need one another due to years of neglect. Really sad, but I’m glad that they have each other in a cruel, fungus infested, deceitful world.
