So, so helpful! Picked up my first GoPro, and really struggling with footage. I don't really care for filming myself (board nose mount), but haven't been able to get POV to work well, so it's what I default to... This video really helped out. One thing I really struggle with is POV making waves look almost flat... 16:9 in 1080 Superview really flattens it out. A head-high wave almost looks like it's knee high. Great tip on adjusting the camera in the water! Thanks!

Question: from what I can tell, it’s only possible to use the HyperSmooth Stabilisation at 60FPS or lower... have you noticed much of a difference between HyperSmooth and Standard Stabilisation? I’d like to shoot at 120FPS but also like to use HyperSmooth...
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
you can't hypersmooth anything over 60fps, that's correct. Hypersmooth is SOOO much more stabilized than standard stabilization or no stabilization, it's incredible. BUT, for POV barrel footage, that stabilization crops into the image, and you lose out on parts of the barrel. so you have to be pretty deep for it to look good. I have only shot barrel footage with hyper smooth at kelly slaters wave pool, cause the waves were so long i didn't want to shoot 120fps. but long story short... i'd shoot 120fps for almost everything, and maybe turn on 2.7k/60 Hypersmooth for a wave or two on long heavy barreling days.
@benrowe6815 жыл бұрын
Great video !!! Did you mention about having image stabilisation on/off
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so... I just mentioned what frame rate you CAN turn it on. I personally don't like the stabilization, as it crops into the image by 10%, so you lose part of the barrel view. the Hypersmooth IS really cool though, but I'll more use that on land than in water.

Thank you Sir! Can you tell me if it’s really 1000 % waterproof from all your experience? Thank you.
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
Not 1000% but 100% I’ve used the Hero 5, 6, & 7 without the underwater housing and the only issue is sand getting stuck in the hinges of the battery door. So you need to make sure it’s clean so it locks all the way.

Thanks for the tips! Just got GoPro Hero 9 to film my surf and cannot seem to find any information about using it without the protective casing, as the GoPro mount brackets (the attachment part) under the camera do not seem too sturdy for the camera weight. My setup is very similar to yours, no floaty protectice case. Although I know it is the leading action camera company in the world and their products are high quality, but was wondering maybe you would have some reccommendations about that? Thanks!

Great Video!! actually just got the MyGo mouth mount and leash a month ago. Headed to your neck of the woods next week to try it for the first time. My GoPro is a Hero 4 Black. in protune I have ISO limits of 6400, 3200, 1600, 800 and 400. No 100.? Should I just put it on 400 and leave it? Thanks
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
Ya just lock it as low as you can 👍🏼
@dougpurcell-dnr65695 жыл бұрын
@@brettbarley another video recommends leaving it at higher ISO, as it will adjust down if needed, but won't go any higher than what you set. My GoPro 4 black does not have an ISO min. Is that correct? Maybe different than your recommendation because you are talking Gopro 7? Thanks
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
Even when I used the hero 4, I would lock the ISO max at 400. My settings suggestion applies to all GoPros, but yes is different for Hero 4 and 3. You don’t want a high ISO cause then when you’re in the barrel it’ll go up, and blow out the whites and everything outside the tube. Since you have the hero 4 and less control, just set it to 400 and forget about the ISO. Unless then you find yourself shooting on land at night or something, or in your home. Even barrel shots I’ve gotten after sunset, were shot no higher than 400 back when I had hero 4. 👍🏼 for surfing there’s definitely no need to set iso above 400 and anyone that says otherwise is incorrect.

More of a "workflow" question.. do you record the during the whole session or do you click record before you start paddling for each wave? I have found that clicking record before every wave can be distracting but recording a whole session can impact battery life and memory card capacity becomes a concern.
@brettbarley5 жыл бұрын
oh NEVER record a whole session... that's honestly never even been a thought for me. You're talking about killing your battery significantly faster, then having SO much footage to go through, and blowing through memory cards and hard drives to hold it all, most of which is just you sitting or paddling. I just keep my thumb on the record button when i see waves coming, so i can tap it and start paddling soon as i see a wave i want.
