A year later and the Browns are 10-4. Kitchens is gone, but Mayfield is having a good year. 25 to 8 TD to INTs and he's only been sacked 18 times. Based on this I'd be willing to bet Stefanski has been doing exactly what Brett suggests. Baker's longest pass completion is 75 yards to Donovan Peoples-Jones, and I'd bet real money it was a catch-and-run off something quick, as opposed to a long dropback, slow-developing bomb. I can't praise these videos enough, not just for exposing the layers of how football plays work, something you never get from any broadcasters, but also for the insights that directly contradict the conventional wisdom that tends to blame players first, instead of coaches or systems. They were saying that Baker was regressing last year. No. Kitchens just abandoned what worked for his quarterback. When he went back to it, Baker looked much better. Consequently, a video about Baker Mayfield makes me look at Sam Darnold in a different light. They say he's regressing, but is he? I don't have confidence in the Jets' offensive line (I guess they're sort of young?), and Adam Gase has proven he's a terrible coach. Also, Gregg Williams was committing serious crimes as the offensive play-caller, culminating in the zero blitz in a Hail Mary situation that got him fired. Someone needs to re-learn what Darnold's strengths are and start calling the plays that utilize them. And there could be a low-key benefit to losing out on Trevor Lawrence; they could use their pick to draft the best offensive lineman in the country. That might not be sexy enough for the Jersey fanbase, but with better protection and better play-calling, Darnold's flashes of greatness could turn into consistency. Finally, I love the comparison of Baker and Brady, especially Belichick's efforts to give an immobile quarterback more time in deep dropbacks. The Patriots' chipping to help the tackles is brilliant. I'd love to know if Stefanski is utilizing Chubb, Hunt, Janovich and the tight ends to buy Baker time on long-developing plays. They probably release off the chip to find a check-down spot, right? The trouble is some enterprising DC will probably learn that a formation where the RB and TE stay home to back up the tackles is probably going downfield and counter with a deep zone. Hopefully, the Browns then recognize the middle of the field will be open. Kollman; more videos. I'm hooked.

The 75 yard TD to DPJ was actually on a heavy set Play Action bootleg to the right. DPJ had a nasty double move, out and up, and beat his man by like 10 yards by the time he got the ball.

I was watching the Brown Steelers game and I told my friend that there was something up with bakers' footwork and that he looked slow on his drop and he thought I was seeing things. But after years of watching Joe Flacco and learning his tendencies( you could tell by his footwork if he was really prepared or just going through the motions), it was easy to spot Bakers issues. Your video is spot on and has great stats. I'm happy I sat through the whole thing.

Incredibly informative video. You are such a benefit to every fan. On the subject of Baker's feet, as you might remember, Alex Van Pelt, the Browns new OC, made that "Mozart not Metallica" comment. (Very disrespectful analogy, btw, as peak Metallica was impeccably precise.) Anyway, when Alex Van Pelt showed up as the QB coach in Cincy in 2018, he flipped Andy Dalton's feet. Andy played his first seven seasons with his left foot back (though he didn't lunge it back like Baker), and the last two seasons, under AVP, with his left foot forward. Cincy people know football, and any Bengal nut can tell you more than a few reasons why the Bengals O mostly struggled in '18 and '19. But now I'm wondering if one strand in the braid could have been Andy's feet. Anyway, that AVP flipped Andy does seem to presage what he'll try to do with Baker.

Only at the 13 minute mark but it seems like another reason Baker prefers his drop style is due to his height. Being further from the large interior linemen likely gives him better vision and reduces his chances of getting his balls batted (which I have noticed is fairly common for him). Tom, on the other hand, has about 4 inches on Baker and is clearly more comfortable releasing the ball over the linemen, leading to a shallower drop. I wonder if Baker's drop depth is consistent with other short-ish QBs. Edit: and.... you mentioned height at 19 minutes :P

Great Video. It explains the enigma that is Baker Mayfield better than I could have conceived in my own head. I knew the problems with his drop and roll out tendencies, but I see now that he probably understands the coverage better than it appears at times, its just his mechanics making it "first look or no look." Please someone send this to Freddie. I really hope they get it together.

Thank you. I've been hoping you'd do something on what a difference the coaching makes on the team. I wonder how much Kitchens (&staff) got seduced by Mayfield's "photographic memory" that was touted during the offseason. He can learn the playbook backwards and forwards, but just because he knows the plays doesn't mean he's calling the ones that suit the team's tendencies and compensate for their shortcomings. They also had tons of talent that was clearly not gelling, and that's probably as much because of the bad play calling as it was not being on the same page.

Thank you. Unlike the Mayfield haters, you've actually pointed out the root cause of Baker's struggles as a QB, and it's *playcalling/coaching.* His ideal game is 20-35 passes (45-55% of the offensive playcalls) spread out to 5-9 different receivers (incorporating lots of quick throwns and play-action), with routes run on all three levels of the field. *He struggles in the air-raid offense simply because he doesn't a) have the best pass-protection, and b) it's unnecessary considering that he has two of the best RBs in the league in the backfield with him.* *People claim that Lamar Jackson is "leaps and bounds" better than Mayfield as a QB, but in reality, Lamar Jackson has a coaching staff that designs a playbook completely around his strengths as a QB (short and intermediate throws, running with the ball, deep passes up the seams; no more than 25 passes), whereas Baker Mayfield's OC and head coaches spend half the season with their heads up their asses trying to turn him into Patrick Mahommes 2.0.*

Hey Brett Honestly, I have never seen someone talk about football like you do. So detailed and honest. I feel that you love the game and that's great. So If you wanna come over to Germany and be my QB Coach I would be the happiest man alive :P Keep it going Luis

Thank you for the explanation of the 2 gap and play action comparison. Very informative. Hopefully Freddie can be smart and keep the play-action in a higher percentage than the first part of the season.

Thank you again for another amazingly in depth breakdown. I feel like when watching your videos I’m really understanding how the nfl works and it’s players. Your analysis is so thorough and clean, it’s a pleasure to watch. With making this quality of analysis have you considered coaching, or have you had teams reach out to you offering jobs? Thank you so much for this as always and thank you for years of quality content.

"Dangerous content"? Good grief. KZbin's been asleep at the wheel again. Sorry to hear your channel was hit for some rule change, but I'm glad you persevered. Thanks for posting such great content. I love football, but never really knew the technical side of it until I started watching your videos. They are impressive in their scope and insight, and I'm sure even pros and scouts watch your channel to get a better sense of what's going on out there. Great job, as always. Have yourself a great holiday!

Fantastic video I would like to add the beginning of the season looked a lot like todd monken's offense at tampa bay with all the deep route tree concepts. I know freddie was calling the plays but it looked nothing like the offense he ran last year. I think monken was installing the gameplan during the week so Freddie could be "head coach" during practices then Freddie was calling plays on gameday. These last 5 weeks at 4-1 have looked like Freddie's offense from last year so I wonder if he started taking a more active role in designing the plays and gameplan.

Baker fits more with a West Coast offensive coach like Reid or Gruden, and not somebody from the ‘bomb it deep’ Arians tree like Kitchens. Promoting an unproven, rookie Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach was a naive move.

Hey Brett, great video as always, but could you do a breakdown on the Vikings Offense under Kevin Stefanski this year? I’m a Falcons fan who believes we should be VERY interested in a West Coach offensive-minded Coach like Stefanski, and he seems to be deploying an extremely efficient, balanced offensive attack that’s elevating Kirk Cousins to an MVP caliber QB, but how much of that success can be attributed to Stefanski and how much can be attributed to Kubiak? Your take on it? Again, great video!

As a Vikings fan I don't think Brett will do too much more on us just yet, he's already covered us twice this season. Having said that, great question, and one I'd like to hear answered too. Question for you though: what do think the issue is with the Falcons this year? Admittedly I haven't seen much of your team this year but the Vikings had something to prove in Week 1 and I thought the Falcons would recover from that loss.

Liam Briggs Coaching, coaching, coaching. Kollman did a video on our disastrous Defense earlier in the year and it still rings true. Our defense is incapable of playing zone defense whatsoever, but are athletic enough to play man coverage. Deion Jones, Desmond Trufant and the rest of our Defense can run with anyone and our defense feasts when we dial up blitzes and man coverage, but we refuse to do that. It’s infuriating. On offense, Dirk Koetter isn’t a West Coast offense so he isn’t getting the best out of our Offensive talent. The O-Line can’t stick to assignments in the run game, there are free blitzers running right through protection in the pass game, and Dirk dials up the most bland Offense in the NFL. Quick tunnel screens with no setup/blocking, no trap/counter/misdirection runs to compensate for poor blocking, passing plays consist routes that don’t go together and playaction doesn’t make ANYONE bite. With a competent WC offensive coach and an experienced, aggressive DC next year, we could become contenders again. We have too much talent to be THIS bad, but since Dan Quinn told our offensive staff from our Super Bowl year to fuck off (Shannahan and LaFleur, who are now successful Head Coaches) but instead hired his buddy Steve Sarkisian, we’ve been in disarray. That’s why I’ve been curious about Stefanski’s success, and whether it’s mainly a product of Kubiak’s tutelage.
