Brett - As a Falcons fan, thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. Pretty much nailed and extrapolated everything we have been saying and seeing for the past month and a bit. Dan Quinn is arguably one of the worst defensive coaches I've ever seen. The point that makes it all so exasperating is that he's had 5 freakin' years to install his defensive system and the schemes with pretty much the same foundational players. He's infuriating to watch with his basic scheme designs that are poorly executed. We are sick of this shi**. All the talk that he and the team do, with none of the execution. They are talented, no denying that - but they are so full of themselves that they've forgotten that what's just as important is strategy and execution. Something they've been failing at for more than just this season.

These Falcons kind of remind me of the Romo-era Cowboys in their series of 8-8 seasons: great receivers/weapons & top shelf QB, and a bunch of talented guys on a mysteriously abysmal, bottom-tier defense. All the bloviating analysts will blame Matt Ryan (like they blamed Romo), but it's not the QB, Ryan is talented as hell, it's the COACHING. (The offensive coaching has declined as well since Kyle Shanahan left, btw.) Thank God for this channel; rational, insightful football analysis is hard to find. Keep doing you, BK.
@Dalejr88rox
@Dalejr88rox 5 жыл бұрын
This is such a good comparison. Notice how over the last 2 seasons, despite Dak's occasional struggles and general inconsistency, the Cowboys are consistently keeping up with everyone they play because their defensive personal and coaching is so good. Romo would've easily gone to at least a couple Super Bowls if Jerry ever put any attention into the defense and the expertise he's shown in the booth since retiring backs that up imo
@sunandablanc
@sunandablanc 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dalejr88rox Yeah, but I wouldn't blame JJ, he drafted talent, but bad coaching made it irrelevant. Your defense started turning around when they got Marnelli as DC. That 8-8 defense had some ballers--Demarcus Ware, Barry Church from the Jags, Orlando Scandrick at corner, a young Sean Lee--but they ranked near the bottom of the league 3 years in a row. Same as what BK is saying about Falcons here, they should be better, the talent is there. In general, coaching is what separates the great franchises from the also-rans and talented collapses, and we often neglect it and lazily blame QBs like Romo or Ryan or Phillip Rivers instead, who are actually making the team competitive or holding it together.

I'm not an NFL coach so don't take my word but they also have to make a playbook, have the players execute the plays, schedule practices, analyze film, help struggling players, and more. Again he also might not want to be an NFL coach as it's a very demanding job
@FuneralGraveMemorial

I ate those food - I bet he would be better than Quinn at that too and there are assistant coaches to help with everything. Making KZbin videos takes a lot of skill, time, and effort as well. Been watching football long as my 52 year old ass can remember. Not long after you put out this video pointing out the epically bad play by the falcon defense, starting after the bye week on the road in New Orleans, like flipping a light switch, this defense made a turn around unlike any I've ever seen. After putting some of the worse defense on film I've watched, these same exact players went into the saints house, smacked em right in the mouth sacking Brees 6 times, and held them to 9 points. That success carried the rest of the season on defense helping the falcons finish out 5-2. Two of those wins were vs playoff teams on the road. They beat a 5-4 Carolina team on the road that still had Rivera and play off hopes. They beat the bucs on the road on a walk off o.t. pick 6 by Deion Jones. In those 8 games the falcons put up 20 sacks, 43 tfl, 9 ints., and several ff's. The sack numbers would've been higher had sack leader Takk Mckinley not got hurt vs the niners sacking Jimmy G and the tackle trying to block him, at the same damn time. He was starting to go beast mode and was amongst lead leaders in pressures and pass rush win %. I've seen units get better. But over time, not instantly like this. All the credit goes to Raheem Morris. During the bye, Quinn talked Morris into going back to secondary coach from receivers. He also gave up gameday defensive play calling and let Morris and lb coach Jeff Ulbricht. Ulbricht calls 1st and second down, Morris calls 3rd down. The secondary went from horrible and clueless into a very good one. They did this with Oliver in his 3rd season and a rookie starting because Trufant was hurt after the saints game. Morris is now officially the dc, and has a very talented group heading into 2020.

Great video. As a Redskins fan, I saw something similar happen with my team this year, they just regressed beyond what made sense given the personnel. I think it is some combination of the team quitting on the HC and the HC being done and ready to leave. I can relate, I've certainly felt like that at some past jobs, and it was just best for everyone for a fresh start.

we got one of the best SS in the game, and he plays him at LB, we got the leading FS in interceptions from last year, and he moves him to CB, we got a big playmaking C, and he has him playing sag zone, we have a super fast pass rushing DE combo, and he doesnt even rush them, we have one of the best inside linebackers, probably the fastest, and he has him just stand in the middle playing SAGGED ZONE. its very very frustrating to watch, its like were always playing prevent defense, no physicality, all sagged zones

@Robed Tapestry he is rangey with ball skills, but he needs to improve as a tackler to play safety full time in the NFL. Definitely NEED to see him on the field more in 3 safety nickel looks (AS A ROBBER) which is really where he excels.
