Great video, learning a lot from your simple explanations. Idc what a 40 year electrician has to say in any of your videos because you’re the one out here filming it. Keep the videos coming, I’m learning, and trying to keep the wife happy!

Wow. Loving these videos... Electrical have been a problem... I have added ceiling fans, replace a regular switch to a smart switch, replace an outlet, little things like that. These videos are very informative...I am learning a lot. Thank you for these videos.

On an enclosed trailer build that I am doing. Do you recommend Romex? I am insulating the walls and then putting the plywood back up. The walls are tube steel. I just worry about bouncing and movement inside the walls and possible wire insulation that may wear down and arc on a steel tube. Thoughts? Thank you BTW
@brettleybuilt
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
This is a tough one. I guess you could as long as you used rubber grommets or something to keep the Romex jacket from wearing out.

Any suggestions on installing breakers on main panel with main shut off on top.

Do you mean being able to shut off the main power at the panel box and then replace the breakers powering circuits throughout the house?

i am building a metal garage like you have and want to know if i can just connect the sockets to the metal building as i am not planning to dry wall or insulate. can those blue outlet boxes be screwed into the metal on the building? thanks. i am getting a lot from your effort
@brettleybuilt
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
I guess you could take the nails out and put screws in their place. They also make blue boxes that have a tab on one side where you can screw the boxes to a stud or wall. I would use those if you can find them. Lowe's usually has them in my area.

@@narcissistinjurygiver2932 No, you can not take the nails out and use those plastic boxes. They are made and listed for wood studs and a wall covering. You are required to use metal boxes and you need raised covers, not mud rings. You also can not use Romex in exposed, subject to physical damage locations. You have no wall covering. Must be AC, MC, or conduit.

Brett, I hope I am not being a pest but I have a question. Does the power have to be turned off on a main panel when you are hooking up the ground and white wire from a sub panel? Thanks in advance for your answer!!!!!!!
@brettleybuilt
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
I would absolutely recommend turning off as much power as possible. The reason I test everything with a multimeter when everything is connected is to be sure I am not getting any back fed power through my neutral or ground. If the power is still on and something isn't just right, you could get shocked.

Do you know what the NEC Code says for running wires in a detached garage that does not have dry wall? I spoke with an electrician (he's retired now and not taking on new work) that told me there is a minimum height for running the wires but I cant find it in the NEC codes. Did you ever come across something like that?
@brettleybuilt
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
Not sure on the code but if you are running wires in a metal building I would probably keep them around 4 feet high.

@@brettleybuilt It is not a metal building just an old 50's wooden framed garage. I decided to drill 0.5" holes in the studs 3.5" from the top plate (to avoid the vertical nails coming from it). I hope I am not required to use Electrical Conduit but I can't get a response from my cities building department.

I watch a guy who has a KZbin channel and he owns an electrical company in Chicago. He bought a farm in Missouri and has totally restored this house. Since he is a electrician he used conduit throughout. In my building in Missouri that we bought last year, it has it's own service and it has wiring everywhere. So there are 3 outlets for 220 and other outlets for 110. But what i didn't like was all the overhead cheap lights were on an extension cord so I had to walk everywhere to plug them in. Some of the lights were total junk and i have taken them down. Some had mice living in them which i took care of and now have bait stations everywhere inside and out. At one time which I took down were industrial lights that didn't work and I knew I could refurbish the wiring for new led lights that turned on with a switch. Of course some of the original wires weren't long enough so i added junction boxes in to extend to where I wanted them to end. I tried hiring an electrician but they either didn't go to my town or were too busy. Your place will be just as you want it when you finish it, I'm sure!

Yeah, I am very picky and have put a lot of thought into what I want to do with this building when it is done. One reason for the framing is to be able to easily run wires and insulate the building properly. We live on a rock bed which is why we didn't put up a pole barn. Excavating is a nightmare on our property. We hope to put up another metal building that will be insulated using spray foam. I will use conduit throughout that building as the building will be more for painting, car repairs, and dirty and oily projects.

Should've looped the hot wires instead of the ground wires. Grounds will never be moved so it doesn't make sense to leave them super long in a panel. Hot wires should be longer so that it's easier to replace or relocate a breaker. Also, I'm afraid new NEC revisions will expand AFCI protection requirements to garages as well. I don't think you'll have enough room to upgrade those breakers to AFCI or DFCI. Not trying to be one of those hard ass viewers who just say code violations with no further explanations. In fact, I'm neither an electrician nor in favor of expanding AFCI protection everywhere. Bedrooms, dens, sunrooms, and other living spaces makes sense but kitchens, bathrooms, attics, garages, etc makes no sense. Like who TF would put hang something or do anything to possibly pierce a wire in those rooms? I don't get it. If AFCI is required, there better be more AFCI tandem or half breakers on the market.
