*This replaced a smaller Keurig that I owned for 6 years **MyBest.Kitchen** I wanted the convenience of the water receptacle and while this unit is much larger than the previous one, I'm very happy with my purchase. The only downside to this larger model is having to move it from under the cabinets to place the pod and refill it. I was able to rectify this by purchasing glide mats for small appliances. Now, it's perfect!*

Hoon-I really enjoy your videos and have binge-watched several of them while I have been waiting for my new Barista Express to arrive. I just got it yesterday and knew exactly what to do. The first shot that I pulled for a latte (using the single wall double basket) was right in the sweet spot for the pressure! I used the same beans and oat milk that I have been using for years with an older Breville machine and the first latte that I made tasted COMPLETELY different like it was made at a proper coffee shop. I didn’t even recognize the taste so clearly, I have not been extracting the full flavor from my beans all this time! My settings were 6 on the coarseness, 3 internal and 3 o’clock on the grind amount. Absolutely perfect! I am buzzing so hard right now from the strength of the shot. I measure the weight of the liquid extracted from the portafilter with a digital scale to figure out the coffee to water ratio. On a 17 gram grind (ratio of 1 to 2), for example, is x2=should equals 34 grams of liquid is added with the espresso gauge reading between 10:00-11:30 o'clock. Stop the water before it reaches 34 grams by trial and error. That should be set in the program for that bean weight and grind particle size. This procedure is for perfectionist espresso brewers who goes by the book, LOL...The built-in grinder is quite as good as the Breville Smart Pro if the proper tweaking on the outer incremental burr adjustment is carried out.

I noticed that as well and ive been asking in every video ive watched since im new on making coffee drinks with the same breville barista express. Ive tried so many times with different grind sizes and grind amount and sometimes i get the right pressure but no the exact weight (36g) and thats when i realized that maybe i should reprogram the time for a double shot in the barista express and not use the default time setting (which is set to 60ml by default) but i wasnt sure if thatll be the solution for a perfect espresso or if i should keep trying with different grind sizes and amounts. great video, I personally love my barista express (same model as yours). I once had trouble setting the perfect grind size for which I did a little reading and found that you can adjust the grinder directly on grinder's top burr. This might help you get from 9 --> 8.5. I don't know the exact effect it has on the grinder dial numbers, but in my experience it felt like reducing one level on the top burr had a -0.5 shift on grinder dial. I would be great if you did a video explaining it :) thanks for the video

I used to be able to take the grinds out after brewing and they would come out like a "cake" in the trash. But lately, they stick in the basket and I have to clean them out with a towel, plus they are more saturated with water. I tried changing the burr setting and the grind size setting on the side of the machine, but it is still happening. Basically, too much water is being retained inside the basket. What would you recommend?

I also use Illy on this machine. So far I found it to be best to grind fine (author of this video would call this "choking", the needle around 1 or 2 o clock position) and use a small dose (16 g). Oh, and very important: NON PRESSURISED basket (single wall). Also, you should skip the single wall basket, it does not help. Begin with the grinder at around 5, and work from there. You should get around 40-45 g in 35 seconds (including preinfusion). If you try these tips, tell me they helped at all.

Actually, channeling wasn't caused by the 14or15bars, I got the Delonghi 310, 680, and other Delonghis, and those are stock 15bar machines, that I don't have any channeling when I use bottomless, I do tap on the side of portafilter every time, with machine that don't come with therm-siphon system, lower the pressure to 8.5bar at the group head might get more decent result, since therm-siphon does recycle some of water back to the boiler, that does lower its pressure as well, if the puck grounds wasn't that finer enough, all though I haven't tested that theory yet, but gonna to try it in next week.

I even have experimented with setting it to finer than that and it's still under extracting. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. My understanding was that if it was under extracting that I should either apply more pressure with the tamper / and / or make the grind finer. The other question I had is with regard to cleaning / descaling. The light was on this morning so I watched your video on cleaning and I did that but the light is still on. I imagine that means that the machine needs to be descaled as well? Thanks in advance.

Hi Hoon, I have this machine. I notice both on my breville 860 with built in grinder and my duo temp pro 810 that my crema has a lot of small bubbles on top. It’s random. Is this because somehow the water is too hot or some other reason?
@HoonsCoffee4 жыл бұрын
Are you using double wall basket or single wall? If you're using a double wall basket it is normal.
@CaffeineJogger4 жыл бұрын
Hoon's Coffee double. I love the grinder in the 860. I was lucky . Someone threw it away because they thought the grinder was broken. It just needed clearing, beans stuck inside.

Thanks for your thoughts and the video! What about doing a 8 grind and tamp a little less harder? The issue I see is you didn’t talk about tamping pressure..? Thoughts?

@@HoonsCoffee you bet! Just purchased the same machine. I have been using the sumo no velli Oscar, a heat exchanger machine but it’s over 6 years so we’ve upgraded. Stoked to use a machine with preinfusuion and to have a smaller footprint in our kitchen. Appreciate your videos and merry Christmas!

Need help. I haven’t got a good cup since I bought my Barista Express. I had it set on outside grind 8 & found inside setting on 6. I started watching videos (mostly yours) & started following the dial in. Grind was too loose & gave no pressure, cup was at 36g in 12 seconds with 18g of med roast coffee. So I dialed my inside grind setting to 5 & outside to 8 hoping for factory setting. 18 seconds, very little pressure, crappy taste. Well now I’m on 3 for the inside setting and 6 on the outside with 20 seconds, 10:30 on pressure gauge & I can drink it but it’s still rough. It sounds like the grinder is really laboring & if I’m right it needs to go finer still. Before I brake something, am I right on my inside setting? How low will the outside go and should it go to 0? Will it lock up if I keep going finer? Do I have a lemon grinder? I’m running the IMS cup. Any advice before I go for broke?

Wanted to add the tamp is hard pressed in. Going to the store for another bag of beans, the ones I’m using are from a local fresh roaster & it might have been a bad batch.
@masonhawk11072 жыл бұрын
It was the locally sourced fresh roasted beans causing the trouble. Tried some old store bought stuff and it’s grinding like your vids. Drinkable but not there yet. Could be the store stuff only gets so good. Thanks for the vids

@@HoonsCoffee I also watched this whole video and I will watch all other great videos. Question, I bought same machine couple weeks ago and one thing I noticed it leaks water into the right corner of the tray as I start up the machine and as I research I see lot of people saying that is normal. I understand if it was at steaming but this is happening as I power it up. Is it normal?
@CaffeineJogger4 жыл бұрын
so Hoon, to be clear, 8 is Courser and 6 would be a finer grind? Is this correct? The Grinder adjustment is confusing with arrows pointing towards Finer and Courser but it's important to realise not to turn the grinder wheel in the direction of the arrow indicator. Turn it to indicate a lower or higher number?
@HoonsCoffee4 жыл бұрын
Lower the number is finer grinds.

@@HoonsCoffee Hoon, Higher number is finer. For example no 15=finest. It's printed on the wheel. lowest is coarser and the very lowest is before 2=dual wall.

It's made on a Barrista EXPRESS so that makes it an "expresso", love it!

That's what espresso was originally. It was just a faster way to brew filter coffee. That's how it got the name EXPRESSo. Over time however, it developed into a different brew entirely. One that we now call Espresso.

You mention adjusting the grind to "coarser" yet the pressure is higher? For a coarser grind normally you'd expect less pressure? A finer grind, more pressure? Am I correct or not? Thanks Hoon

But he went from a single to a double shot basket. More coffee the water has to push through = more pressure.
