PSA: If you wake up completely deaf on one side, go straight to an ENT. It is almost certainly sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and most walk-in clinics will assume your ear just has fluid on it and will send you home to go permanently deaf instead of giving you the steroid injections you need. It's completely maddening and there'll be times you'll confuse the ringing in your head with real sounds like; power transformers, running plumbing, the neighbors washing machine in the middle of the night, etc. etc... Though with practice you can get accustomed to it. I've had it pretty much all my live. Do you have it in the one ear, or both? Aside from this I have abnormally sharp hearing. Weird flex I guess, but it's not _too_ awesome*. _* no seriously, The clattering of dishes HURTS, sometimes literally knocks the wind out'a me. I hear fluorescent lights hum, ...and that hum flutters with power spikes such as AC units switching on/off, which is often and prominent enough to get distracting._ _And think of that sort of person who ELECTS to talking Really LOUDLY_ *ಠ_ಠ* *_...A L W A Y S_* _...It's absolutely exhausting. I have my days where I can almost completely ignore it but when it’s time for me to go to sleep it takes me about 2-3 hours. And my favorite sleeping position is on my left side so it’s been a nightmareeee trying to sleep but sometimes I just push through it cause I’m too comfortable, I just hope with all the advancements with technology and medicine they’ll find a ‘cure’ but I use that term loosely😭

I have APD (auditory processing disorder) and it's sort of like this and selective hearing, I can't always hear people's voices and what they're saying but I always seem to hear the background noise and noises unnecessarily far away a lot more, and it is kind of a super power but not when I really have to pay attention to someone, also the reason I didn't have many friends or did that well in school but now I'm 20 and I've learned to deal with it, practice and can listen to people a lot better.

This is crazy.. I was recently hospitalized for systemic lupus (an autoimmune disease), and had a crazy amount going on with me. One of the weird, unexplained side effects, was that in my hospital bed I could hear someone gently typing and clicking on a computer very far away as if it was right under my pillow. it eventually went away, but god it drove me crazy! I had no idea how it was possible, this is really interesting!

People with APD experience the same thing/something very similar but throughout their entire life, I'd know because I have it as a comorbidity with autism. It's insane. Someone will be right in my face talking to me and I'll have to ask them to repeat multiple times, but in a loud room I'll be driven insane by EVERY NOISE because it's all I can hear. It's awful.

One of my cats has low frequency hearing loss. Cats can't hear low frequency stuff as well as humans anyway. She's always the last cat to realize when someone's come in because she can't hear the door. She also can't hear men's voices and absolutely flips out when she (or they) walk in a room and she sees them (no men live with us and she's afraid of strangers.) But she can hear high pitched stuff perfectly. Sometimes I wish she didn't, lol. Like if I'm trying to put a cat toy away and trying to be as quiet as possible so she doesn't hear and want to play, she always hears and is right there asking to play.

people may be a little confused as to how someone can hear -30db. Audiograms are measured in dBHL (decabel hearing level) which is calibrated slightly differently, with 0dbhl at what was considered "normal healthy hearing for an average person at peak". This is a really good video for explaining hearing loss!

Exactly this! It's often glossed over that the decibel is a *relative* unit. If one doesn't state how the scale is normalized, the unit doesn't communicate anything of value. It could be -30dBSPL (sound pressure level), -30dBHL (hearing level), or -30dB relative to a giant PA system blasting at max volume (the speaker at max would be 0). As a result, -30dB could mean anything from "so quiet you can't hear it" to "so loud it will rupture your eardrums."

I understand that! I was so confused when a standard hearing test came back with one value in negative db. The audiologist was kind and explained 0 db as the expected hearing threshold for humans or baseline. There are "quieter" sounds.

I’m hard of hearing since I was a little girl. I always have to go to my doctor at least once a month. I do hearing tests only once a year to see if anything changed. My doctor told me that I don’t hear low sounds so well. That means I struggle to hear male voices. I didn’t know that until he told me that and it all made sense. I’m happy to see that some people on this platform do these kind of videos. It helps me a lot because I don’t feel so alone anymore.

My husband and I - both have Ménière’s. Mine is a milder form (as long as I eat a lower sodium diet/almost no caffeine), whereas my husband has the severe form. He mentions lower sodium diet in this video, yet caffeine is a big problem too. Out to eat one day and the waitress gave a regular cup of coffee to my husband, instead of decaffeinated. He drank only about 1/4 cup and he knew an attack was coming: fullness in his ear, dizziness, nausea. Two of the staff helped him to the car but before sitting down, he started vomiting and sweating profusely. He must take a pill every day ,to keep that ear draining correctly.

I was wondering if this episode would touch on Auitory Processing Disorder, and it sounds like at least the first case could have been a form of it? It's probably because she has the inability to tune or ignore sounds outside a conversation like say you're on a school bus and your friend is talking to you but you can't listen to them because all you can pay attention to is the loud noises the kids behind you are making or the sound of the wheels on the bus move or the sound of the birds outside and so on. Also I think the reason why your friend can't process talking on the phone is because she can probably only hear the static sound when someone is talking to her especially on a long distance call.

So I have a lot of trouble hearing low noises. I can feel vibrations of base in some speakers but the lower sections of, like, base guitars, I cannot hear. Some deeper voices I can’t hear at all. Those are rare, but I used to have to change teachers in high school because of it. I can hear super high and faint noises as well. I have to have a white noise machine to sleep to drown it all out because the sound of electricity, and bugs, and the house settling can get so loud it’s overwhelming. I even have my own custom set of ear plugs that I wear most of the time. Im super sensitive about echos and irregular noises. The shower with all the noise can be hard sometimes too. It has been a superpower at times though. I’ve rescued dozens of stray kittens from all sorts of places when no one else could find them. I’ve even practiced with judging the directions sounds are coming from. I can hear when some appliances or devices run out of battery because they stop making their sound. I can even hear emergency sirens and alarms from almost impossible distances. But they have to be high noises. The lowest note on a standard 72 key piano is close to the lowest I can hear, though it starts to fade about an octave above that. The "texture"of a sound has a lot to do with it too. Airy and smooth sounds like a flute are good, but scratchy smooth sounds like a violin are a bit too much. Oboes are the best though. Double Bases don’t make a noise to me. Base brass like Tubas make a kind of shuddery noise, but I don’t hear a note or anything. Some of them if they’re loud sound like they have layers, and I can only hear the top ones, even though I know they’re base instruments. Some dogs I can’t really hear when they bark. Movies that have rumbley low noises I can feel through the ground and the seat, but it’s mostly silent… people ask a lot of questions and I’m happy to share, because sometimes I’ll find out another noise that I’m missing, but tell them one they’re missing.

When me and my brother were kids, our parents were addicted to competitive Tetris/Dr. Mario. This was when there was no such thing as LCDs tvs. Just CRTs Sleeping with a high pitched whine for the entire night was a nightmare. Would ask them to stop playing because it was so loud and they would be so confused because it was muted

definitely do NOT need for the mosquito tone if you can hear that frequency. That was WAY too loud on my speakers :( that said some cheaper speakers cut off at a lower range so some people might only be able to hear it on headphones if they are higher quality then the speakers edit: I typed this up right after the mosquito tone that was too loud. I agree with headphones for the rest of the video

I'm in my 30s... that mosquito was just at the border of my hearing, but that made it all the more annoying because I couldn't quite place the rather "coil-whine"-like noise for a moment and was looking around my room for the source. Guess my time at metal festivals hasn't (yet) damaged my hearing too badly. Which is also why I noticed something "off" with the audio in this video, namely the shifting frequency at several point, I assume that this was done on purpose but it's very distracting.

I have hyperacusis *and* auditory processing disorder, so not only are sounds at certain high pitches (e.g. flutes or violins playing, kittens meowing, that tinny noise in the background of low-quality sound recordings) physically painful for me, I have no idea what you just said. I literally hear more clearly when I'm reading captions.

I think I have some of this. I find it kind of hard to understand speech, especially men. I can do it but it's not that easy, it's like trying to understand foreign language. It requires a lot of focus. However I can hear things like the electronic mouse repellents that are supposed to be at a frequency out of the range of human hearing. They are really annoying. My hearing is also really sensitive - I get strangely irritated by sounds like rain dropping against metal windowsill for example and I can hear TV two floors below me. But I constantly tell people to lower the radio volume if its playing in the same room because I can't hear the words in songs when they are played loud, not to mention - the loud, messed up noise is draining me and causing anxiety.

when you played the mosquito tone, I certainly heard it that was waaaayyyy too loud, what frequency was that? it seemed quite a bit lower pitch than a crt which is at the edge of my hearing in my mid 20's(I don't hang out at places that play loud music/other noise, CRT because I have one for retro gaming and parents still have one when I'm at their house). When I was a kid I could tell when my brother was up if I heard the crt whine, the tv might be on mute at 6 am but you can't stop the whining :)

I have tinnitus that is thought to induced by adjustments of my SSRI medication dose. High pitched Ringing or whine intensifies for a couple of days and then after a week or so it disappears completely or is barely noticeable. Has a hearing test and examination and have perfect hearing. It's fascinating to think it's almost like hearing the changing in the way your brain is firing or perceiving signals. It is trippy how complex brains are.

I have symptoms similar to Meniere's Disease. I was diagnosed with that at first. I have some sort of hydrops. A few times I was straining while having a swelling episode and caused a Perilymphatic fistula. This is a hole that allows fluid from the inner ear to leak out and causes vertigo and balance issues. It can take months to heal. I have now had surgery to strengthen this weak spot with a piece of cartilage in both ears so it should never happen again. I have a very small amount of low frequency hearing loss but that could be because the surgeries caused some stiffness in the structures in my middle ear. I do get fullness in my ears and temporary hearing loss (sounds like I have ear plugs in) if I eat too much salt or get dehydrated. It's hard to tell if I have vestibular hydrops because too much salt and dehydration are also two of my many migraine triggers and my migraine symptoms include vertigo and dizziness.

I enjoyed this video. I kept the sound down, as I normally do. The AC was running, so I could barely hear the audio. Then the final hearing range graphic showed up and for the first two sounds, I had no clue the associated tones were playing, then I started hearing them. Oh, okay, I get it... The tone for 8k played... GET THAT NEEDLE OUT OF MY EAR! Next tone... Ah, sweet relief... But, I can hear fire alarms in the next building even with all doors and windows shut and plenty of noise in my own home. So, not a big deal, I was just taken off guard, lol.

I think I had a temporary case of this after a severe concussion. During my recovery everything seemed to be significantly louder. At night I would be woken up whenever one of my parents (on the opposite side of the house) went to use the bathroom. I also had to wear construction site style headphones to go anywhere outside the house without getting a terrible headache.

I thought I couldn't hear the buzz at all, but then I pulled my phone speaker close to my ear and it felt like a small sewing needle made of sound was piercing my eardrum, and it was actually painful. That is the most accurate description I could think of. What gives?! The wife knows my hearing is wonky and a doctor once told me I had "blown out a range", likely due to loud music as a kid.

I have the exact opposite of this I can’t hear female voices/ children or high pitched noises. I don’t hear the beginning/ending of sentences, and consonants are easily missed especially if there any background noise. Hearing aids help to a certain extent but even then it doesn’t always help.

First time i heard about the mosquito thing was when one of my older teachers caught a student using it for their text notifications. The teacher explained that students use it to use their phones without teachers knowing due to not being able to hear it due to old age. Needless to say the student panicked when they got caught.

i remember there were mosquito units at the cinema and the walmart where I grew up in the 90s. They were horrible! Another one I know of is at a train station, which is so painful because as a passenger, you have to walk through a long hallway with this awful sound. Glad I dont live in that area anymore

I lose hearing on and off, it comes in spirts.. i went to the doctor and just was told my Eustachian tube must be inflamed causing the hearing loss and got sent on my way with no further info.
