If you’ve ever used Apple Pay or Google Wallet to pay for your groceries without carrying cash or cards, you’ve been exposed to the marvels of NFC technology and what it can do for us. But did you know that some people are taking one step further, opening doors with just a hand motion, or exchanging information by just beeping their arm? The future is already here with many people getting a chip implanted in their body. What are the risks and benefits? And what happens when something goes horribly wrong? Let’s get into it!

@Some Commenter Who Might Make Videos In The Future Honestly, piercings are a grey area for me. They're not implants, and you can take them off if you get an infection or an allergic reaction to the material. I'm talking about implants as accessories (for example: small metal balls inside your arms or horns on your forehead), unnecessary plastic surgery, etc. If something goes wrong, you can't just take it out like a piercing.

Imo the scariest thing about hand chips, specifically, is the same thing we fear about germs. Our hands touch all kinds of places throughout the day, and if someone found a way to compromise the chip, you might get compromised without even realizing because the hacking device could feasibly be any electronic you bring your hand near. Right now it's a bit of a gimmick, but as these become more capable, I'd bet there will be more and more security concerns.

3:50 I'm no medical expert but I don't think that's how you get a staph infection. You don't get it from your body reacting to generic foreign bodies such as the implanted chips in this case. You get it from the specific foreign body, the staphylococcus bacterium.

Great video! I would have also loved a mention of possible implications in case of a medical emergency. I know that in Germany, in some cases even tattooed patients are not allowed to undergo certain medical procedures because of potentially magnetic inks in their tattoo. What would happen if you have a chip or magnet implant and the doctors therefore refuse to give you an MRI which could save your life?
@zebraloverbridget
@zebraloverbridget 10 ай бұрын
In the US, you might be discouraged from getting an MRI if you are unsure of the ink used for your tattoos, but they'd still do one regardless in an emergency. Worst case scenario, a color from your tattoo gets forcefully removed and you have to wait for the tattoo to heal again. It might hurt worse than getting the tattoo since it would happen all at once, but it wouldn't be life threatening. However, certain inks can cause issues with xrays in that they might reduce the clarity of the image. They make you take off printed tshirts or pants (even if they have no metal) for the same reason.

Same reason why smart homes even existed. Rather than rummaging in your bag/pocket for your keys and inserting it into a keyhole when you can just find your phone instead and tap it on a scanner or unlock it through an app. Now the owner can just take away the object needed and just simply tap/wave their hand at whatever to unlock their homes. A simple matter of progression really. Heck, before smart homes even became a thing people thought it was weird to have homes be technologically accessible when the concept of lock and key was already deemed the best and yet here we are now.

Would have to be careful to avoid committing thoughtcrimes (or just thinking stuff you don't want to share) when someone could be eavesdropping. People have trouble with that already, with their phones, imagine what happens when you don't even have to create that "passwords.txt" any more. Seriously, though, I can't wait for the "mind reading" tech too. It would go very nicely with wide-FOV augmented reality headsets in a "normal glasses" form factor, which we are likely to see for sale in a few years. (Or even in "scleral contact lens" form factor, if we are lucky, Mojo Vision even had a working prototype and started on medical certification before deciding to shelve the project for now for financial reasons.) And with even wider spread of IoT, it coud get even better, you'd only need to look at something to get any info you need from it and send commands. And on a less practical note, I am quite excited about "naturally" controlling things like an extra pair of hands. (Or not extra, if you got unlucky before.) @@rimuru2035 Eh, self-driving taxis are a thing already, will be be production-ready in a few years' time. I'm looking forward to them replacing taxi drivers at least in big cities fairly soon, making taxi cheaper (and safer) to use and hopefully getting rid of a large portion of the personal cars. It will spread almost everywhere, eventually, just a matter of time. And regarding the neurolink, it's just a matter of figuring out tiny biocompatible electrodes, ones that won't get rejected by the immune system. I found out about blind people getting bionic eye implants, to replace their damaged or lost eyes with cameras, quite a while back. That was just b/w and at very low resolutions, and lasted only for some years, but it let people see again, and it wasn't new even then. (The first working bionic eye was implanted in 2009 if I'm not mistaken.) And yes, I believe this will become available to consumers sooner or later, even if not quite as widespread as the smartphones, and the horizon probably is a bit further than with self-driving cars.

@JayOhm

@@pinastubljar Hmm, could actually help I imagine. Could detect that you are getting distracted, and whack you right back on track by throwing your todo/remnders list (or whatever you use to stay organized) right in your face. Could also take notes instantly before you get the chance to forget the information. ADHD really requires an external "support system" to function "normally", and with that you could have it built in and deeply integrated.

I once watched a crime show in which a family all had trackers implanted into their wrists, because they were super rich and kind of paranoid. When their son was kidnapped they thought „oh well“, secure in the knowledge that the police could easily track him down. A few hours later a ransom letter got dropped off at their door, with a bloody bag containing a certain tracking chip inside. All they ever achieved was getting their son sliced open with a pocket knife. These chips can be quite easily located.

It's become apparent to me as someone who works with technology (Not specifically IT, though as an automotive technician it still applies) that the techie and the person who actually has to work on the tech tend to have very different opinions on the same things. Most IT dudes I know tend to be extremely wary of newer technology, I believe it's because they understand it more than most and understand it's risks and failings. It's like whenever I talk to friends or carguys they tend to be very impressed by all the bells and whistles that come on 2020-2022 models, meanwhile I won't drive anything like that (I prefer late 1990s, early 2000's builds) They ask why I'd want something that old and I have a few answers, but it boils down to "Ease of repair, there's a lack of electronics to go wrong, and security reasons" I understand what comes with having a whole smart setup in a vehicle, and I want nothing to do with that. Same reason I usually don't carry a phone, I don't feel like being tracked 24/7, it's creepy.

I got it installed at a very professional body modification specialist shop, who had previous experience with installing similar products. I have only had positive experiences with my implant- for the most part, it's simply a convenience in my day to day life. I programmed a Samsung deadbolt to accept the RFID in my hand to unlock the front door to my house, for example. Also, it lights up when it's scanned, which is probably my favorite part. This kind of body modification obviously has potential for harm due to negligence in the install or use process, but I personally did about a month worth of reading and studying regarding the product before I decided to "take the plunge." Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat. It's been one of my favorite luxury/cosmetic purchases I've made in my life and totally worth it.

1. It's crazy to think how much power electronical implants have and the effect that they have on a humans body. Personally, I would never get any. 2. 10:05 My favorite villager is Soleil. She's a snooty hamster with a warm color pallette. She's grown on me overtime but that's why I love her so much. Animal Crossing is one of those game series that let's you interact with your villagers on personal level. It just depends on how you look at it. 3. Is it just me or is Howard much more terrifying than I remember? Did he just call you a meatbag? I don't want to find out if you really did hack into you😨

I’d never get a chip like that in my body! While the idea is neat enough, there’s just too many potential issues with the technology when it comes to security. Just look at the things we need to do to protect our contactless bank cards today with the RFID protection cards or wallets to prevent people from being able to scan your card when walking past. I have one of the protective cards myself in my phone wallet. Only “implant” I could ever imagine using would be a CGM if I become diabetic or if I start having severe issues with hypoglycemia (low glucose) that calls for continuous monitoring, but a CGM isn’t permanent, you change the sensor every 1-2 weeks depending on what brand you use. Though there is one kind that has an implanted sensor that stays for months and you have an external device on your arm to read the chip, that’s a kind of CGM I wouldn’t want to use though. I’d prefer the change sensor at home regularly kinds even though it means more needle pokes

This could be massively useful for medical purposes imo. People store info on their phone for emergencies but what if they don’t have it or it’s been destroyed? Depending on the injury the chip is likely to still be in tact. Even if the hand or arm is severed. Also a chip for people who are chronically in the hospital instead of a new wrist tag every time. Chips instead of wrist bands anyway since they can fall off and be swapped. Can’t swap a chip (the wrist band swap happens mostly in mental health inpatient situations…) Chips for patients who have a disability that impairs their speech. Chips so onmy a set of surgeons are allowed to use certain equipment to prevent the wrong users from using something and hurting someone. Tracking who used what in case something goes wrong. Idk I mean there is a lot this could be useful for but the medical implications are massive.

This is pretty much my thought on it all. If I were to get one, I wouldn't be using it for payments (rather not accidentally pay for another's items in the store kind of things; it's happened to people before) As a truck driver, say I'm in an accident and unable to speak or someone kidnaps me at a dark truck stop and (God forbid) kills me, I'd rather have some way for my family to be contacted and the doctors (if not dead) to know allergies and such. That's kind of the only reason I'd get one at this point.

When I was 16 I bought an RFID chip with the idea I could set it up with my first car when it healed to unlock and start, I ended up looking into it and then never got round to it. I’m kind of glad I didn’t try at that age as no doubt I’d have a medical issue now! But I’d try a more up to date option when it comes around though
