Getting stuck in extraordinary circumstances happens, but what about getting stuck somewhere you visit every day, like the bathroom?

Hey folks! We have moved captions to the CC function to give you the option of turning them off/on. We personally write the captions ourselves, and upload them to KZbin's CC. Just make sure you choose "English" instead of "English (Auto-generated)". Here's how to turn on CC: For Mobile: Tap your video, select the 3 dots in the top right corner, select Captions, select English. For Desktop: Hover over your video until the playbar shows up, click on the CC logo near the bottom right. Enjoy! ☕️

My grandma had agoraphobia for most of her life, but it became really severe towards the end of her life. It started when she had a heart attack and became afraid of going far away from home, in case it happened again and there was no one to help her. Over the years it progressed from being afraid to go too far away, to being afraid to leave her own yard, to being afraid to go outside at all. She started spending more and more time in the guest bedroom of her home, and like the two cases described here, one day she went in and just... never came out. She spent the last few years of her life in that room, on absurd doses of tranquilizers that her irresponsible doctor would prescribe, watching TV and drifting in and out of consciousness. Ironically, when she finally did pass away, her heart--the thing she was so worried about for years--was the last thing to go. RIP, Grammy. I hope wherever you are, you're not afraid anymore.

What you said about the heart is similar to my mom. They diagnosed a weak heart at her, and over about 5 years, her basket of medicine to take every day filled more and more... One medicine against the side effects of the other. After 10 years suffering, she died from what i believe the many medicines she had to take, and the last thing pumping straight and strong when she was in her final coma was her "weak" heart. 😭

I would just like to contribute that there's a reason why it's the bathroom that seems safe. In many homes, bathrooms are the only room that has a lock on the door handle. If you've tried to escape someone else in your home, the bathroom seems like a decent option because of the lock. The abuser can't get in. So it becomes a safe haven of sorts to wait out the storm until they aren't going to hurt you anymore.

It's so weird this showed up as a recommendation. My next door neighbour got trapped in his bathroom a couple of weeks ago and only got out when I heard him yelling through the ventilation fan and called the building manager to let him out. 😅 I was so glad it wasn't me! I was diagnosed with agoraphobia about 7 years ago and I still go through bad patches at times. Lockdown has not been great for it as staying at home too much is one of the biggest triggers for me to spiral back into it. It's not a fun thing to live with, having a panic attack at the mere thought of having to do groceries is no way to live.

Then my mom was trapped in bathroom for over an hour while my dad was watching a film with headphones on ..my grandma's home is a few yards away and she yelled through the ventilator... Grandma came and told dad someone was calling her ... Dad thought it was me , came to my room upstairs and asked why i called her ... She was still trapped in that bathroom ..turns out the bathroom door had a problem and gets locked from inside , just a tap from outside was enough to open the door ...

I had agoraphobia as a teen. I was bullied at school and beaten at home and funnily enough, the only place I could actually avoid that was the downstairs toilet, the only room with a strong lock and I actually did wind up sleeping in their multiple times so I can really empathise with the security it brings. My agoraphobia started as my hyperventilating when I'd walk into the cafeteria at school during lunch time. It evolved into me avoiding groups at lunch altogether. Nowadays, 15 years later, I have trouble leaving my house without anxiety. It has steadily been at the very least, only going to very specific gas stations and places when I was working. Anything new or outside my routine gave me debilitating anxiety. It's a very scary and real issue for so many people. We all need a safe space.

This is interesting. I always thought of agoraphobia as fear of large open spaces while I have always have thought of claustrophobia (which my mother has - it can be annoying...she won't use an elevator alone or at all if it is less than 5 stories and she is terrified to fly, not because of the height or planes, but because she can't escape - she was locked in a bathroom as a kid by her brother and the door got stuck and a locksmith had to come break her out and it scarred her for life) as fear of places you cannot get out of or escape. So to hear the same definition apply to both is interesting and something I need to look closer at out of curiosity.

When you realize that "saftey" is a mere illusion and you're not "safe" anywhere at anytime, makes this sadder.

I can actually relate to secluding myself in the bathroom for longer than needed when I feel stressed or am going through a lot. The sense of complete privacy is reassuring. This is kind of a nice warning to self for signs of that becoming dysfunctional

Hey, I know it's been a while, but I hope you are doing ok. I understand wanting to isolate sometimes, and it's ok! Of course, not wanting it to become a problem is also normal, but quitting cold turkey would be hard, right? Maybe gradually finding another way to cope? I hope you are doing ok, but if you don't, it's also ok if you need some times or help. Be kind and patient with yourself, you deserve to feel safe in a way that's good for you :)

Yeah. The bathroom's a space that can start to feel like it's the only place you aren't under constant scrutiny, or somehow expected to pay attention to everyone else's needs while putting up with never having your own needs considered. They're cool and quiet, too, long as you're alone. Feeling as though you can't leave is a horrifying thought, but I can certainly see how people developing agoraphobia could see their bathroom with it's good, solid lock as a mental safe room.
