I once stepped on a random nail in the woods, while camping with some friends. We were in a pretty rural location, so I couldn't just go get a tetanus shot. We cleaned it the best we could, but luckily, however, I found out you are supposedly more likely to get tetanus from living on a farm (barbed wire, old rusty metal, poop & dirt, etc), which I have my whole life.., so I was not too concerned after. Its been 10 years since then, but I still think I got off lucky, lol. Of course, I had my shots as a kid, but now I'm starting to think it would be a good idea to get updated..

I think I got almost a dozen of vaccinations against tetanus in my life so far. One as a child, as *all* children over here get and one every time I had a bigger injury that may have gotten in contact with dirt, which is common practice and the first thing every doctor will do. But in a country where many people have to pay to see a doctor... I wonder how the USA could ever become a super power with such horrible health standards. Please note that pretty much the rest of the world just visits a doctor whenever they feel like it because they never have to pay for that.

It is mostly associated with rust because old rusty objects are the ones most likely to cut you and contaminate the wound. You can catch it by digging in the soil with an open wound on your finger, or from broken glass. Anything that allows the bacteria to get into the open wound from contaminated soil.

When I was a kid my father didn't want to get me vaccinated (he's a total antivaxxer.) So my mother, who's a doctor (weird couple I know) showed him pictures of people who had tetanus in order to convince him that I needed to be vaccinated. Word of advice, don't look at pictures of people with tetanus unless you have a strong stomach.

I remember an article, I think it was in Reader Digest, where a doctor noted that Tetanus was so rare in the United States that nearly all of his fellow doctors didn't even know what the patent he saw even had. This along with the "had *all* vaccinations" is likely what threw off the doctors regarding the old lady. The really sad thing is she did everything you advised - she went in ASAP.

I once stepped on a drain cover that has metal prongs. The thing was nasty. Moldy and mildewy. I got really lucky and didn’t get sick. We cleaned the wound out thoroughly and I went to the doctor to get it seen. best part is I was going on a trip that week starting that day and it was delayed a couple of hours to take care of it.

Yes that is why when I got cut on both of my arms by an old safety deposit box the day before a hurricane blew through I grabbed my antibiotic ointment I got from urgent care after I got an infection after a surgery, and used it immediately after I got home from work and took extra care to disinfect the area again. Did a round of it for seven days like the label on my prescription said and the cuts healed nicely. The pain and itching stopped after three days and the scars are starting to disappear. There would have been no way to get medical care during a Cat 4-5 hurricane. Sooo lucky I had that in my possession.
