I work as a CNA and we had admitted a man that was homeless, he smelled like musky skunk with sour smell of athletes foot, it lingered anywhere he went and it literally permeated into the furniture in his room. I thought he'd be happy to have access to a shower but he was extremely combatant and it took us a whole week before we were able to get him in the shower (he was a huge guy and didn't go willingly) when we took off his shoes we saw that his feet were actually purtrifying, he had untreated diabetes and has been wearing the same socks and shoes for years without removing them they were basically fused together...I don't even know how the man was walking and the smell of ammonia was so strong it burned our eyes and a CNA actually threw up and trust me we have iron stomachs. We had to rush him to the hospital to debride the wound....It was the most horrific experience of my career. I'll never forget the squishy foot man...

I have lived all over the continent of Africa and met thousands who never "bathed" in water with soap. These same people never ate sugar, never drank alcohol, and ate a diet of yam. They had very decent health with very thick rough skin that felt like tree bark. Locals were always amazed at how weak my skin and hands were and said it was because I was so "rich". I was always amazed at how excellent their teeth were by not eating a western diet.

The longest I went without a shower was a week because of that bad snowstorm in Texas in 2021. I work at on an ambulance and Was stuck at the station for a week straight. No bed, no working heating (except when I was working on the truck) rolling power outages and no showers lol. Let me tell you when I FINALLY got home I took a VERY long shower. When I was a teenager a became extremely depressed and suddenly became afraid of showers. I don't even know how long it was between each shower but my hair was very long and I never took care of it. It became extremely tangled and was just in a rats nest at the back of my head. before this I was afraid of people (including myself) touching my hair so I believe this played into it. I got sick of it and chopped it off and took a shower to get it clean enough to feel comfortable getting it fixed by a hairstylist. It has grown out now and while it was short I got more comfortable with my hair and I now take showers every other day. I look back now and I'm glad I took that step. I'm happier now and have my friend use my hair as practice for her cosmology class. Thank you for letting me vent here and I hope you have an amazing day.

What I find insulting is when people call others disgusting for not showering every day. I had to stop showering every day advised by my doctor because my skin was too sensitive and I got a bunch of problems over it: scaling, dandruff, dry itchy skin... now I shower every other day (or every 2 days when it isn't hot/rainy). I don't stink and this is much healthier overall!!

I recently started a new, pretty labor intensive job that makes me sweat so I had to start to shower daily, right after work because we have showers in our factory Before that I showered every 3 to 4 days, usually every Wednesday and every saturday/Sunday depending on how my schedule is looking Since i started showering daily my skin has gotten dryer and worse so I started skipping on using shower gel and only eash myself with water alone after work and my skin is feeling and looking WAY better

@@danidynasty moisturizers helped a bit, but didn't solve the problems, just made them not as bad. My doctor didn't prescribe anything as she wanted me to try showering less (she also said it was healthier overall). I shower about 10 times in 7 days. In Australia, a lot of people have 2 showers a day. I also wash my feet when I come home on a hot day by putting shower gel on my feet, rubbing them together and rinsing. I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. My partner showers 14 times a week. It helps if you have aches and pains and I really enjoy relaxing in the shower.

Just a whisper : it’s really frustrating going to the dermatologist as a black person. They don’t all study what certain rashes look like on us despite knowing black skin and white skin will present the same rash differently. “ pale pink rash “ is probably not what it looks like on black or skin with more melanin. And they aren’t racist or mean. I’ve had two tell me flat out they didn’t study black skin enough and that they were sorry they couldn’t recognize what was wrong. Finally was referred to a dermatologist who did get the opportunity to go to a school that showed what rashes look like on different skin and explain to me why I was scaring etc. thanks for coming to my Ted talk

I dated a veritable monster, a sociopath, and the abuse was absolutely off the scale. It was constant, multi faceted, mental, emotional and physical. It broke me utterly and I'm forever changed as a result. I stopped showering and found it incredibly difficult to force myself out of bed and into the shower. I guess it depends on your culture and where you live. I live in a very hot humid tropical country and people normally shower 1-2x a day. Showering 2x a day is very normal here. Adults even wash their toddlers 3x a day. It's also normal for people to shampoo wash their hair daily. I also know a lot of people who wash their faces 3x a day. They wash their face during lunch break at work.

I once went a little over a month without showering. I was hospitalized and on a watch and didn’t want to be watched in the shower. So I didn’t shower. You feel gross at first, but after about a week I didn’t feel greasy anymore and the smell didn’t get much worse. It definitely didn’t go away though.

I finally got the memory of the actual event in therapy and what feels like the next day, when I went to shower, I had such a huge panic attack that they decided it was necessary give me four mgs of my usual Ativan. I know that people are going to think I’m disgusting after this, but I’m going to talk about what it’s actually like not showering. I was 15 at the time, severely depressed and hated my body to the point where I would only shower once a week. It was a very rough patch in my life. Then, my grandma died after fighting cancer for 6 years. I was devastated. School had started at this point and it exhausted me. I was sleeping for 14 hours a day, and not having any energy to hang out with my few friends. I kept putting off showers because I couldn’t fit them in my usual schedule. I took my first shower after 3 months without doing so, save for washing my hair and basic hygienic activities like washing the face, pits, and groin. I had gotten no complaints from anybody. My skin didn’t have any rashes and seemed relatively okay. This became a habit that I still have a hard time breaking. I think I’ve been 1 month now.. I’m going to take a shower right now. Edit: I’m now showering almost daily. I’m trying to keep it a habit.

I never shower until I start to feel grungy and sometimes that can take up to two weeks. My wife never complains about body odor and she has a nose like a bloodhound. Further, when I DO shower, I don’t use soap - only water and a few different scrubbers - this includes my hair. I come out of the shower refreshed and have totally stopped having dry skin problems that used to plague me in the winter, AND, my dandruff cleared up!

gonna be very honest and say i'm on nearly the exact same boat as you, grandpa passing from cancer and everything lol. i finally took a shower two days ago after weeks of not doing so and i had to exfoliate twice because before leaving the shower as i was drying my body dead skin and dirt was just rolling off of me. i still haven't had the drive to shower as often as i should but i have noticed itchy bumps on my inner elbow so i'm really gonna try to today, but knowing my mental illness i'll probably soon stop caring again and put off showering. And I'm telling you by day #3, not only will the itchiness drive you crazy, but all kinds of crazy stuff starts to happen depending on where and how you live. I’m trying to study for my Esthetics license & I have a hard time studying/focusing so I feel like I haven’t learned anything lol. The biggest part of the test is anatomy and skin diseases. When you started talking about the glands I was like “hey, I know those!” & I already understand them more from your 1min explanation than the 5/mo of studying. I’m the type that needs visuals, I can’t just sit there and understand what I’m reading especially when it’s putting me to sleep or i just start unintentionally procrastinating with distractions lol. If you manage your composting well Compost bins are actually pretty neutral in terms of smell. I have one and it just smells like earth with some wiff of damp wood. It is actually pretty neat too. I'm pretty sure I would smell A LOT worse of I didn't shower for a week. I can't even imagine not showering for years!

The longest I ever went without showering was a week at a scout retreat because the water heater was broken and for some reason the scout leaders didn't think it important to call a technician or a plumber or whatever, hence I didn't shower for a week because I at the point had an aversion for cold showers. But boy did I reek by the time I got home, in fact I stank so much that my mother ordered me to shower as soon as she saw and by being a few feet away from me, smelled me.

yeah one time I was in a mental hospital and they only had cold showers on my side of the building so I just straight didn't shower. I had PTSD so already had sensory issues. I wasn't bout to torture myself like that.

@@dinarusso3320 if they had access to a lake even, I used to stay at the cottage and I would just bring my soap and stuff into the lake, we’d also have sauna then swim which is a lot like a shower, you often exfoliate as well. I find it’s def the hairy areas that get gross too, even providing a wash bin and cloths to just do a sponge bath type thing is better than nothing!

the longest i've ever gone was like 12 days or something. it was after a 5 day backpacking trip too😬prior to leaving for the trip i was already at my griminess threshold and fully intended on showering before the trip but then i stayed up the whole night before writing a paper (bad idea) and simply ran out of time and it was a lot hahaha
