A missing foot found on the beach started a manhunt for where it came from- but why do only feet wash up on shores? What happened to the owner of the foot? And why do feet end up in the ocean in the first place? How long does it take for bodies to decompose under water? Let’s get into it.

This is really interesting from a forensic/anatomy perspective! How the bones separate away from the body during decomposition. I see you’re discussing the theory I’ve heard before: that the feet being in the sneakers means they’re much more likely to float up to the surface, and it’s likely simply due to accidents such as drowning that have happened. As you guys say, it’s still really important to report these incidents!

The common idea is that many of them are from jumpers of the bridges around the area, but a lot are probably from other reasons too. Its odd to think theres likely a large number of feet with shoes floating in the oceans around the world.

Oh, boy, this is sad and hilarious at the same time. They examined the "foot", took DNA sample and sequenced it, compared it to supposed relatives' DNA... And at no point anyone noticed it's not even a human foot! Dog gammit, how do you mess up so hard? They could have noticed it at each stage. I work as a researcher myself in the field of genetics, and our colleagues from classic zoological systematics field are getting annoyed at us for "ignoring morphology and ecology of the samples" (though we aren't). And this... This is a textbook example of what they mean. XD

Why are people obsesed with low calory foods? That's pretty much the purpose of food. To give you the energy (which is measured in calories) you need to survive. If you are worried you are getting to much energy and it's confirmed by professionals, cut the food amount or spend more energy.

Tbh I think people should also take note of the nutrient to calorie ratio. Like a durian has a huge amount of calories, but it packs more nutrients than 6 servings of salted potato chips. Also, calorie-deficit isn't everything- search up how (saturated and unsaturated) fats, protein, (complex and simple) carbohydates, and sugar are broken down in the body. This is biology not simple physics.

Well a leather shoe would decompose or at least being soacked too much for floating. So all those suits who messed with criminals can't float back at least which did not wore qualitie shoes. And a shark most likely attacks a bleeding or not ragdolly person. So why not finding severed but decomposed feet.

One time my dad drove to a store with my mom, and in the parking lot there was a body. It was Halloween so they thought nothing of it. They thought it was decoration. A ton of random severed limbs have been in that parking lot.. Im surprised I haven't been like shot yet

Could they be the remains of people who died in the 2011 tsunami in Japan? The ocean currents from Japan could travel to the Seattle-Vancouver area. There were a lot of people who were swept out to sea during that tsunami.

@@LikaLaruku you must've missed the part where they found out it was animal bones wrapped in seaweed. But they found a surprising number of actual feet in laced sneakers, but no stilettos. The reason why none were in stilettos will make for a great talking point at dinner tonight with the family! Lol. They've got iron stomaches they can handle it.

I wonder if it's possible to calculate the place of origin based on location and state of decomposition combined with age of wear on the shoes? State of the feet/shoe gives a timeline and the location combined with ocean currents can help back track to an estimated place. If enough of the origins show up in a certain part of the ocean, an investigation on ship routes could point out key info. Like imagine if the timeframe keeps aligning with certain cruises, it might mean there's actually foul play at action and it becomes a semi organized event. Just my imagination going rampant though.

Maybe. I've heard that they can sometimes figure out if a body was moved by looking at the critters found around or on the body. If you find a body buried in the snow, but you find, say, fly eggs, then you know it must have originally come from somewhere warm.
