One of the real measures of greatness in a person is how others, not remotely interested in their 'line of work' (for Cloughie, that would be football), know and enjoy watching and listening to the person in question. Brian Clough is a fantastic example of this. People who don't even like football would listen to, and watch, BC. Same goes for other greats in sport such as Muhammad Ali, for instance; each are more than just the job they do. Even though they are great at what they do - they have something... extra. Whether that's a quick wit, a great approach to their sport, etc.

Yep. England failed to qualify for 2 successive World Cups during the 70s - the exact same period that Clough was in his prime. He was far too much his own man for the idiotic and short-sighted FA to handle. Just 2 letters 'FA' - the reason why England hasn't won a World Cup since 1966.

Football misses characters like this and needs characters like this. Cloughie excelled in managing teams that played football how it should be played, with skill, intelligence, hard but fair, no players hassling referees and very few bookings and red cards. Football should employ the rule that only the Captains of teams can approach the referee on the pitch, any other player approaches the referee or argues and it’s an instant yellow card or the opposition are awarded a free kick or yardage gain, this would stamp out a lot of the childish behaviour we see in football nowadays. The managers have to take responsible for this as they are not shy in taking the accolades and the money.

I used to think similar but then I realized that football authorities are just running a giant circus and they value theatrics and controversy far more than fairness or accuracy. Derby and Nottingham Forest's more disciplined approach was a nice bit of gamesmanship although I've no idea if that was Clough's intention. In a disputed call the referee is more inclined to side with the side that has a reputation for sticking to the rules than with a bunch of cloggers. I think the FA introduced a rule about not ganging up on the referee every time there's a foul or penalty appeal but it was never enforced.
