Knowing when you're being irrational... that's very scientific. If the religious knew when they were being irrational, many evils of religion would end. For example, nobody would be punished 'in the name of god', because it's irrational to claim you know what god wants OR that god needs YOU to punish others when he's more than capable of doing so himself.
@SaffronHorizonАй бұрын
Religious moderation is really a contradiction in terms. If you're really religious and you believe that a god or gods was responsible for the creation of a certain scripture, where is there room for picking and choosing? The all knowing, all wise creator of the universe has ordered you to follow a certain set of commandments. Disagreeing with just one of those commandments shows that you don't really believe that they came from an infallible god. Those who call themselves religious moderates are really non religious people who've found some ideas in their scripture that they agree with and are now pretending to be religious.

Well said. If someone exercises "religiously" they do so without compromise.
@langreeves6419Ай бұрын
You're stuck on thinking of only one definition and type of religion. But you don't get to decide what religion is and isn't for the billions of people on earth. You have decided the simplistic idea "religion bad" is ultimate truth. So if any religion doesn't meet the requirements of being bad, you decide it must not be religion.
@juanausensi499Ай бұрын
@@langreeves6419 Let's sort this out: do you think irrationality is bad?
@langreeves6419Ай бұрын
@@juanausensi499 I think generally that's a true statement. Religion doesn't require any irrationality or supernatural elements.
@juanausensi499Ай бұрын
@@langreeves6419 Can you give me an example of such religion?

"A connection to a long heritage" is precisely the problem we have in Israel/Palestine right now. Without this mythical sense of entitlement, it would simply be an issue of real estate which could have been dealt with long ago.

The so-called sacred texts are literary, not literal imho.

Does Brian think his prayer made any difference? Apparently no, since he doesn't believe in a god. Does he think his prayer could change god's mind, if he did believe in a god? If in fact he'd found his mother dead, how would he then feel about his prayer and god? I just don't get why he'd waste his time. And I'd love to stay overnight in a "haunted" house, if I had some instruments to record room temperature, drafts, electrical activity etc. We humans are great at seeing the tiger in the trees that isn't there, it's a survival mechanism.

Always amazes me to see smart people try to argue the case for religion…and inevitably fail.
@Andrey-il8rhАй бұрын
All people are irrational, the only difference is that some people are trying to realize that and others treat it as some kind of a virtue

Good for you Brian Greene. Good for you.
@larryparis925Ай бұрын
Nah. He's just disingenuously hedging his bets. He's a great educator, but to accept a non-god(s) explanation of cosmology as he does but then to essentially say 'but I'm not going to commit to it', is uninspiring fence-sitting.
@RandomStuff-he7luАй бұрын
Well, to be fair, Greene is a string theorist which is as close as science gets to being a religion.
@goldfishi5776Ай бұрын
the Bible has more foundation in provable history than their theory that hangs by a string 🤷

Sabine Hossenfelder uploaded a video recently about Brian Greene as well, talking about some shortcomings (and actual mistakes?) in Greene's explanation about String Theory. At least, in this case, he doesn't sound like Jordan Peterson. He's trying hard to explain in simple terms and not add unnecessary _sauce to his pasta._
@jasonmoquinАй бұрын
I LOVE Sabine. SO real and not afraid to call bullshit.

I disagree. Greene sounds suspiciously like Peterson inasmuch as he’s desperately trying to sound like the ‘reasonable’ one in the interests of popularity & talking fees…

Believing in religious stories is ignorance, that ignorance is what needs to be gotten rid of
@DebateColloseumАй бұрын
So if you get rid of any religious objective morality where then does society get its moral directives from?

Religion provide alternative subjective moralities. Gods order enslaving people and killing people. By the way, since you are a morality expert, is it objectively moral or objectively immoral to marry a third cousin?

Community. Ritual and tradition provide comfort. Brian knows science. Plus if the religious aren't free to be that way in all legal forms, it is taking their freedom. Just my opinion and I can be wrong.
@RandomStuff-he7luАй бұрын
That's the irrationality of it.
@dansacco1964Ай бұрын
Our brains find comfort in companionship and support. Talking to a god you dont believe in makes you feel less alone in stressful moments because its natural to feel better with the support of a team. If you confessed a secret over the phone and felt a huge sense of relief but the phone had disconnected and the other person heard none of it, the sense of relief was still a real feeling.
@goodvibes-gy3jnАй бұрын
Because people can be irrational. It’s hard or probably impossible to be completely rational. The important thing is we all acknowledge that rationality is a standard that we can fall short of but nevertheless should strive for.
