Jack Coan has got to be the Most Frustrating QB i have witnessed at Notre Dame. Starts so slow, Our True Freshman Comes in and Gives a Huge Spark, then he flattens out and shits the bed, Coan comes back in and leads us Back to win the Game. If he can somehow start like that and put a full game together, we can have a very dynamic offense. Our Offensive Line has found a bit of cohesion. Tyler is gonna be Good, like Coach said "Hes Young". Drew Pyne shouldve started and he needs to be the starter next game. Virginia Tech in Blacksburg is a Top 5 Most Intimidating environment to play in, now add the night element is this becomes a huge advantage for them. But Coach hit it right on the head, the Boys are resilient and have a short memory. Solid Win against a very good Football team. #GoIRISH #RestUP

Pyne is the third string for a reason. He does not have the accuracy of Coan and he doesnt have the athleticism of Buchner. If he were truly the saving grace you all say he is then it would of been displayed during the Cincinnati game. He went 9/22 having very poor throws in multiple key plays. People have all of this bias towards him because he had one good drive in the Wisconsin game for a td when he first came in but in his totality it is very clear that he is not the caliber qb that coan is. The main issue they have is many of their pass plays take too long to develop and the pocket breaks down. What I would prefer for them to do in the future is institute more quick release plays. This would force the defense to back off and alleviate said pressure allowing for coan to hold on to the ball longer in some instances. It would also help with the run game having less guys available in the box

That's why Coan looks terrible because the oline isn't blocking long enough for those plays to develop. The last drive is what Rees need to do with Coan. Up tempo empty backfield spread the defense out and Coan pick them apart.

Kelly is a good coach, but he is even better a bullshytt artist. If you listen to this carefully, it is all about the drama of his being right (lucky) in sticking with Coan and Buchner, and not playing Pyne. If Kevin Austin hadn't intervened with the most miraculous from out of nowhere catch of the errant 2 point conversion pass by Jack Coan, Kelly would be dodging tomatoes and virulently condemned for not playing Pyne when the other 2 QBs were flailing and losing the game. In the second half, Buchner was without a ND reception, threw a pick six, another INT, and still a third pass that hit a VT DB in the numbers (chest) and was muffed. ND has three QBs. One who can pass but cannot run or scramble (Coan); another one (Buchner), who can run and scramble but who cannot pass -- anybody remember Malik Zaire and Brandon Wimbush] , and the third one (Pyne) who can run, scramble, and pass (anyone remember Ian Book?). Kelly must have blacklisted Pyne for some mysterious reason -- if due to Rees it is bad advice. Until Kelly gives Pyne a legitimate opportunity to lead the team, Kelly and Rees will deserve whatever criticism they incur for the rest of the 021 season.

I remember after the 2019 season I said Kelly has a tough decision to make about who should be the QB in 2020. I myself believed he should of gave the job to Phil last year because Book had reached his ceiling in my humble opinion. Alot of ND fans came for my neck saying Phil is not good he cant play so we all know the outcome Phil transfers to BC with a lesser talented team and he looks the part. Kelly choose the safe bet and stayed with Book because he knew he had a good team. We all no the outcome Book is Book he will win you games which he did but again when it was time to beat a fully loaded Clemson team and Alabama Book again was the weakest link he just didn't trust himself inside the pocket. So here we are in 2021 with QB musical chairs and a bad offensive line im sorry the way Notre Dame recruits offensive lineman there should not be any drop-off period. I myself have been Kelly's biggest supporter over the years but im off that train now because I have seen enough talent wasting with his teams to last me a lifetime. How many wide receivers have left the program in the last 3 years I literally can't keep count anymore. Michael Porter JR came back to Southbend with his new team Cincinnati and caught some crucial balls against us that move the chains he definitely look the part to me but this kid couldn't get on the field at ND. Is anybody sensing a pattern yet with this program. Then some of you ND fans has the nerve along with Kelly to criticize Phil jurkovec because he didn't want to sit behind Ian Book for 3 years when he clearly has a bigger up side he would work wonders for Kelly if he was on this team this year. He is 6-4 mobile and can push it from the pocket. Sorry for this long rant

Talent is wasted due to Kelly decision and coaching staff selection like Del Alexander, Jeff Quinn. I think this was the first time we seen 7 freshman play at once. Not in garbage time but meaningful snaps when game was on the line in a hostile environment. I do agree Phil should of played over Book too but the push back from Ian Book lovers was *_"If Phil was so good why can't he beat out Book."_* Well guess what? Those same Ian Book loving fans want Pyne so I just give the same push back *_"If Pyne was so good why couldn't he beat out a transfer in Coan."_* My the tables have turn and it really pisses them off. Another thing is you must work PR for Kelly who cares that ND has won 10 or more games the past 3 years they still can't beat the elite programs in the country. Buchner needs the experience yes but his bias against Pyne and bias for his piss poor OLINE coach (players seeking coaching outside the program) is evident. Coaching is about execution yes. But it's also about creativity. Has the team ever passed out of of 1 back 2wr set? You're giving up downs Kelly. And In the process you're giving up national titles. ND needs perfect football to win titles cause we don't get the guys the elites do. After all this time he doesn't come anywhere close to perfect. Forget about all the losses to inferior teams, but how about the purple faced rampages? The only thing that saved him was the 2012 year and honestly if you really look at that year objectively, there should have been probably at least 2 more losses. Pitt should have won and lots of people think that the Stanford running back got in on that 4th and 1 stand. Plus those were all of Charlie Weis’ players. Why he wasn’t fired after 2016 is beyond me. Yes, the team did turn a corner after that, but the guy still has never won a truly big game. I guess Oklahoma in 2012 and Clemson last year, but they were severely depleted.

Because he is the better qb. You would have to be insane to think that Pyne could of made the throws that Coan hit in that 4th quarter drive. He doesnt have the accuracy to compete at the top level. When Coan has time to let the play develop he gets the ball out decisively and hits his mark . The problem is the pocket tends to break down too fast. What they need to do is start the game with faster developing plays so he can get the ball out quick. This will force the defense to drop more in coverage rather than fucking blitz every play which will allow the pocket to hold longer. It will also help out the running game as less guys will be in the box

I dont understand what all these fans biases are towards Pyne. We all watched him play in the Cincinnati game and he was missing throws left and right. Coan is by far the most accurate qb they have and when he gets the ball out quick their offense is hard to stop as evident by the last drive today. Imo they need to have more designed quick release plays in their arsenal with coan in the game as their oline is no where near the caliber they were in the past. They run into issues where they wait too long for plays to develop and by that time the pocket has collapsed. Get the ball out quick and force the defence to back off instead of blitz repeatedly when coan is in.

… I don’t know - I’m trying not to criticize Kelly for his coaching style, but it’s so hard … I loved the way a more-mobile Buchner came in and ran counters and options, gaining much-needed yards on the ground, and improving what I believe is a mostly-ineffective Irish running game … Kelly is so pass-happy, and in my mind, so one-dimensional - he needs to coach the primal philosophy of football by insisting his team “force their will over their opponents” by running the football - he just doesn’t do that - it actually seems he DOESN’T LIKE to do that - and they lose to good teams that can … bottom line: I’m glad for the team that they won … - but I wish certain aspects of football would be better-coached and displayed … btw, my QB ranking would be Pyne, Buchner, and Coan, in that order …

As a Hokie who was at the game, i as hoping Coan would start and frankly we ate him up in the first quarter. The player I feared was Pyne and he did not play. Then Coan comes back in and looks like Tom Brady. This was a very strange game for sure, but one thing is certain in that VT and ND have played two games the past three years and ND won both by a total of 4 points. This is a type of play that should get these two teams together more times. Congrats to the Irish but for God's sake, let Pyne play. He is better than Coan and please do not ask why VT did not pin their ears back and pressure Coan hard when he came back in the game. Everyone on the planet knew Coan was going to drop back and throw until the game was over. One word for this failure - Fuente. Fuente cannot make a real time decision to save his life during games. I have been a Notre Dame Fan My whole life and am sad to say that they are not the same caliber of team they were even 10 years ago. The Players show up looking scared, make basic mistakes, and then barely pull off the win against a non-ranked team.

This game shouldn't have been close, lets say that first. Great Win regardless by the team. Great job by Coan having the confidence to come back in and drive the team down the field. Defense played good not great but solid game. Buchner gave good spark but gave it back with bad 3rd quarter and pick 6. Oline improving. All around congrats to the team. That said PYNE obviously gives ND the best chance to win. This is a 14 point win with Pyne playing the whole game and instead he didn't even see a snap. Coan is great in midrange passing but cant stretch the defense and Buchner passing accuracy is very ugly right now he just isn't ready no matter how high rated he is. There is no reason not to start Pyne. The fact Coach Kelly has him 3rd string is very concerning. These are the types of things why ND can't win a title with Kelly. 10 years and no real great QBs developed by Kelly and he was supposed to be a QB coach. Missed on Golson, Wimbush, Book regressed. No disrespect to those guys love the effort they gave while they played for the team but it is what it is. VERY QUESTIONABLE now this year the position has been a disaster and the QB who has looked the best of any in Kellys 10 years is sitting on the bench playing 3rd string. This makes no sense. Kelly will never become a top college coach or win a championship like this. This is like Mack Brown at Texas with Simms and Applewhite Brown was only able to win the title by getting a generational player Vince Young to overcome his flaws as a coach. The odds of ND lucking into this type of player is rare. Kelly I hope you see the light man and wise the hell up and put the best QB on the field. Pyne doesn't have Coan experience or accuracy in short passing but he can manipulate the defense and stretch the defense throw the deep ball and open up the running game by opening up the offense. Offense will always have low ceiling with Coan in the game and Buchner read option is not the answer. Pyne better start playing games or the future of ND isn't looking good even though this is a loaded team with two potential 1st round picks in Hamilton and Meyer and loaded at RB, WR etc.

The Offensive Line was getting better and playing better by the 2nd half. I noticed how the OL was able to give space and time for both QBs in the 2nd half. If OL improve then ND will get better as a team.

Let him if he wants to, it's clear Coan is our QB for this year and Pyne might be the QB of the future, it could be Buckner. @@ericguenette799 They played him in the second half of the Cincinnati game. He went 9/22. He missed throws on multiple key plays that stalled drives. He just isnt the caliber qb that Coan is and he is far from the athlete that Buchner is. I dont understand the conformation bias that people have for the guy. Like he strung together one solid drive when he was first put into the Wisconsin game but even then multiple of those throws were off the mark with receivers having to be the ones making the plays.

I know I posted earlier but pretty sure I figured it out. It's simple. Kelly wants to keep transfer guys open to joining the program and he wants Buchner to be the future QB. If Coan is on the bench it sends the message that if you transfer to ND a freshman will beat you out. He also wants to keep an elite skillset like Buchner from transferring. It's stubbornness and unfair to the players either way. It's favoritism and the players will see it and he'll lose their trust. He also can't give energy to his team. He's a lame duck coach.
