Well explained Brian, my golf improved loads after controlling the position of the right at impact. Definitely a big key. Cheers

This is a great vid, and very SOLID advice... My heel comes up and my woods go out, and the dreaded hossle rocket! My coach and I have been working through this for a weeks, break though, recorded my two best rounds since, rock on!

Sorry about the late comment, interesting concept though Brian, Alex Morrison....roll the ankles, not lift the right heel! What about casting, the golf swing being a swing of opposites, can this move help maintain leverage and prevent casting?

Kenny Perry keeps his right foot down till after impact.

Thanks. This has been puzzling me for years. You see pros always on that back toe like some kind of ballarina. But when you see historic old golfers, hitting the gutty a mile, they were on their flat back foot. I guess it's just "style" points for the ballarina position.

Look at slow motion of Rory McIlroy...he keeps his right foot flat until way after impact. He's young, flexible, and has one of the best swings around.

Hi Brian, this video is exactly for me thank you...My right foot (heel) stays entirely on the ground definitely to the impact. However, at impact I am like at address so shoulder and hips square and level etc. So, no release of the trailing side to pivot I think is the cause...Keeping my right foot on the ground could be the real cause? I would appreciate if you could comment...thank you

Totally wrong about Hogan. This foot business depends greatly on how you generate your clubhead speed. If you are a "hitter" keeping your rear foot planted is easy since your power comes from the upper body ( Rear arm straightening using 3rd class lever action) . Pure swingers would probably dislocate something since they drive with the lower body and depend on proper kinematic sequencing which begins from the ground up by shifting weight from rear to front foot. Not saying it's not possible but IMO it's not natural for a swinger to keep the rear foot planted. Look at swingers like Hogan, Bubba , Monty, Couples, Singh, Daly , Furyk then look at hitters with their flat feet at impact like Kenny Perry, Paul Goydos . Some actions in golf are natural for a specific swing technique and totally unnatural for other techniques.

There is really no reason to take offense at people disagreeing with you. Everyone has an opinion on everything these days. It's just par for the course. I have always lifted my heel because I noticed my favorite players did it, like Hogan, Nicklaus, etc. What you said in defense of the flat right foot made sense though. I will definitely try it next time I practice. Thanks.

Almost every amateur golfer that I see on the course early extends (goat humps) with their right foot and hip doing the opposite of what it should into impact. The right side needs to remain quiet if you are to maintain your posture and hit the ball solid with maximum clubhead speed. It might not be for everyone but I'd put my money in a flat right foot helping the vast majority of golfers in hitting better quality shots and ultimately lower scoring rounds. I wouldn't be surprised if a flat right foot is indeed better for your hips and lower back then early extending. Let's leave that to the scientists among us. I'm with Brian on a flat right foot 👍👍👍

Agreed, just getting back into it at age 37 after 15 years, issues with arthritis and lumbar spine discs. Have been early extending 75% of the time and catching it thin and at its worst heel impact. When this happens is actually when I feel "the pinch" and then tension increases and its a downward spiral - go home for the day. I have a pretty good backswing / position and anchoring my right foot with a slight pause at the top stops me from pulling down and allows my hips to do their thing (rotate) and get out of the way. I feel like I swing straight down and through the target line, extending only at the very end which puts very little strain on the lower back. Proper rotation is not a problem, but when early extending at impact the lower back feels like it cops a lot of force.

Good stuff. Made me think of Butch Harmon's thought of the right heel leading the toe on the downswing. Similar concept. Contrast that with an OTT spin out move where the heel can actually move backwards and the person is up on their toe almost immediately. Not an attractive look.

The reason I found your video was that I was wondering what opinions there were on the right heel function at the beginning of the downswing. I had been practicing at the driving range on an artificial turf surface and decided to try a kind of pushoff with my right heel at the beginning of the downswing. I had been practicing my core and shoulders rotations as a method of beginning my take back but was still having problems with my clubhead height direction varying significantly. I also was having a problem generating much club head speed. When I began concentrating on pushing with my right heel into the turf at the beginning of my forward swing, what I noted was that immediately my swing straightened and my club head speed more than doubled. What's more, the results were consistently reproducible. It is therefore my belief that, in my case, pushing into the turf with my right heel at the beginning of my downswing has helped me automatically improve both my club head speed, the direction of my ball and thereby improved my finish. The increased momentum of my shoulders, core and club head were an immediate an impressive result. I am glad to see that others notice the right heel importance as well.

Keeping right foot on the ground for as long as possible has helped me maintain my spine angle and not lift up and out of the shot. When I used to lift,I had serious issues hitting it off the toe every time. Working on keeping right foot down has in turn kept me down on the shot and my contact has improved completely.

Brian is wrong about Hogan. I did a web search on Hogan golf swing, and in every example, Hogan's right heel was noticeably off the ground at impact. In fact, it was off the ground well before impact. He appears to be more correct about Snead. Snead's right heel is clearly unloaded at impact, but it is on the ground or near the ground. Snead also has the reputation for being extremely flexible, so emulating him might not be possible for most people.
