we lived in PA when I was in elementary school. there's no atlantic ocean shoreline there [!]. that was hard for my mother who grew up on the water. but she always said "pennsylvania would have been hard if not for the people there". and as time has passed, I realize how much I agree with her remark. I now say " the best time of my life".

This was a lovely uplifting story. I felt this episode shows up the fact that there are different degrees of prejudice against gay people. Brian is a handsome strong masculine man with a mainstream interest in sport. I am not in the least surprised that he was popular with his team. It shows up how shallow people's opinions can be when an attractive person may get an easier ride than some who may not be so blessed. Sadly that's human nature.

Wow. Nice to see a group of straight men not be homophobic douches for once. I'm happy for this man to have this experience to share so that it could stand as an example to our society. On the other hand...let's go up to all straight people and say: "HEY! You straight?" If they say yes, let's say: "Cool....I accept you!" I mean, what's supposed to make STRAIGHT so natural? If people are raised to be straight & weren't given other options, are they truly straight? Come on now... think about it.

I had come out to myself when I was 19. Within a year after that I joined the Royal Garde. I was not "open", but I wasn't really hiding it either. It took me four years to find out that throughout my service all the guys knew I was gay. Nobody said anything, though. I learned that they had been talking about it a lot, while I was out of the military place. They just treated me as usual and gave me peace. That more than I can say about the teachers and psycologist I ran over later in life.

But I'm moved to tears every time I see something like this video. Now he is a political success in a country I fled because of its oppressive racial, sexual orientation discrimination. His is a profound story and shows that some people can move beyond bigotry and the religious paradigm. Thank you for this video.

It’s such a great moment, when you hear, that there are some people really have a huge luck to be surrounded by allies. It’s how it should be and it is a relief for a lot of people, who have had bad experiences. It also reveals to heterosexual men, how inappropriate it is to bully, to laugh at or get violent against a gay person. It’s not necessary to be the best mate, nor it’s necessary to be an a...... and insult or hurt a person just because of a difference, that you can not choose. It is avoidable and you can see, that a person who gets support like Brian Sims, will pass on support to others and that is something everybody benefits from.

Brian I’m Proud Of You For What You’ve Achieved For Our Community. But I Don’t Know It Got Better, Sure I was grateful for my family accepted me. But my Dream of being a History Teacher became impossible because I’d be fired in 1984 for being gay. I had real passion for showing younger people that history shines a light on the human experience. I lacked being a big Good looking football player, and it held me from achieving, my goal in life. I don’t advocate self hate, but it doesn’t always get better. I’m certainly not.
