My two sons just became Croatian citizens and getting their passports now. They're now dual citizens from U.S. and Croatian. Now I'm trying to become a citizen because by the time I hit retirement age, the U.S. will gut social security and no one will get anything for retirement. Retiring in the U.S. is a death wish

Croatia has a very lenient citizenship by descent programme. My great grandparents are from there. I've looked into applying for citizenship which is very possible. From what I understand, tax for citizens seems a lot less attractive. There are 2 types of income tax: 1. national income tax 2. local district tax. So, as I'm in tech and work remote, if you clear Euro 49K, or close there about, you are essentially paying 30% national tax. Then depending on the city you live in, you will need to pay more tax on top of that. So, if I wanted to live in Zagreb (for example), that's an additional 18% tax on top of the 30% national. So, at years end I would essentially be working from January through June for the Croatian government....There are a select few places (seems to be out in the countryside) where district tax is 0%, but even Split is high, I think around 15%. It definitely seems a lovely place to visit, but with a diminishing population, they are going to have to get a lot more creative to entice skilled workers and get people to repatriate there. But, perhaps from just being a digital nomad and not going the citizenship route, it would be quite nice as you explained. That or get Croatian citizenship and run like Judas to another EU country. Anyhows, great video, enjoyed the perspective very much, thank you! :-)

Greetings from Split :-) great video. I just feel I need to add something about the renting a place in Split. Not sure is this the year you were (or are) here, or this was few years ago, but don't expect to rent a place for 350$ in Split, unfortunately that is old news, and that was the situation 3-4 years ago. Last years the renting price is quite a bit more expensive. Ukrainian refugees, and growth of tourism have affected prices. So don't expect to find anything under 400-500$, and that is one bedroom without special luxury :-( also important thing to know about renting a place is that in most of cases you can rent a place on monthly basis only from November till June at the best. From June till November people rent their places by day (touristically) and the prices go from 50-150$ per day. So do not be surprised if the landlord asks you to leave the apartment on June 1.

It's an honest question I would really like to know to publish this list. I lived in Germany for many years and I am presently living in Mexico and according to this statistic you show, Mexico supposedly has a higher standard of healthcare than Germany???? Not to mention supposedly Mexico ranks much higher than Canada, and I guess I'm a bit biased because I am Canadian. I'm sorry but I can't take anything serious you say after reading that. @davidllewelyn
@davidllewelyn Жыл бұрын
If you are in Croatia (or any other Country) for 183 days or more in a Calendar/Tax year then you become a tax resident of that country. Therefore, you will need to submit a tax return for income in that country and income elsewhere. Depending on the tax agreements with you home country then tax paid can be off set against any tax due.

Hello Brian and Carrie. I was very surprised that a birth certificate is required with the application. Is it really so? This is the first time I hear about it and I don't think I will be able to obtain one, since I was born in Russia fifty years ago and immigrated to US about 35 years ago. My husband immigrated 46 years ago. He has no relatives to help him out obtaining birth certificate or a duplicate. We are not going to go to RF and now it would be dangerous to do so. Does it mean neither of us can apply to year-long visa in Croatia? Can anyone with knowledge comment too? Thank you!

in Croatia is nice if ure rich or worked in some of rich EU or world countries and youre retired, but to work here is nightmare, only u can live something normally if ure programmer and work remote for company from other normal country... its not profitable to work here, wages whatever you do are mostly 500-800€, prices of food and almost everything else same or higher than EU or other World rich countries....small wages, high prices are the reason why anyone who can leave Croatia leaves and go in any other normal EU country, in couple of last years whole families are leaving...
