I am Croatian born, living in the US. This is really good information for people wanting to travel to Croatia. My family is on Brac and the cost of accommodation, dining and entertainment is very reasonable there. Your journeys were to the more expensive and highest cost tourist cities. Going off the beaten path, you’ll find all of your costs will be greatly reduced.

We spent 27 days in Croatia and respectfully attempted the language everywhere. We ran into ONE Croat in all 27 days to not know English. It felt easy and we drove all over Croatia. You really missed out if you didn't see much outside of Split. Split was excellent but our least favorite. Croatia is just so amazing.

Dubrovnik - I have found over the years that during the tourist season the old city has turned into a giant al fresco restaurant. All the promenades are covered with tables, serving food of varying digrees of quality. Perhaps for this reason the taile nd of season is the best time to visit.

Thanks for your informative review of Croatia. A couple months ago I started my Croatian Citizenship By Descent. My mother’s parents and ancestors are from Croatia and I found out I qualify. I hired an immigration legal firm. The process takes a while and we just began. I plan to go in April and hope to meet other retirees there once I figure out how to find them. I won’t be working, of course, so not concerned with making money or getting a paycheck. It seems like an ideal place to me if you are retired.

As a Croatian I'm quite impressed with your pronunciation of our towns, I know that our language is a bit awkward for English speakers so I'm really glad you got most of it correct, Trogir being the mistake that I completely understand, it'd be read as tro- (ex. trope) gi- (example in gif not jif) and -r ( the same as the English suffix of -r) I really recommend you see some of the more inland places cuz even though they're not as picturesque as our coastline we do have some amazing stuff, especially Slavonian food. Great video in any case, and I'm glad you had fun in my homeland 😊

@@BrianandCarrie Do not travel outside of Zagreb, the only thing you are going to se is poor places with pigs in the yards. In my case I was driving motorcycle from Zagreb to Nuva Gradiska and I was in shock that places like this exist in the European Union at the same time couple % of people are very rich until 90% fighting to survive. No good memories about this country I can tell about. EU must look closer on those criminal politicians who grabing contributions from the EU and robs his own people....

You will be amazed how many places that cost the same to rent for a month, that they do for a week if you ask.. Specially if you are outside the hollyday season, it is very easy to find those prices.. A longer stay is deffently one of the best ways to get more out of the money.. Most places only have day or week prices, and if you talk to the owner about a longer period in the small places, they will 9 out of 10 times give a good price I did that more then 1 time..

Our family just returned from a day-10 action packed adventure in Croatia ----- Dubronvik 3 nights center of beautiful city, then a gorgeous home rental in wine country exploring many wineries, then onto Split 4 nights where son-in-law was admitted to the hospital sadly. I LOVED Croatia - fast boat tours to 4 islands, ferry to a couple of places, and I walked miles every day, up and down massive steps in the old town and levels of steps in the airbnbs so if you have knee problems, keep this in mind I arrived home and dropped 5 lbs in 10 days depsite all the amazing food and drinks ---- why the drop ? Again, high energy going every day many miles with the steps etc.. I am senior 66 solo back in NY and I want to return to Croatia for a couple of months as it will be great for my health (since my return a few days ago, I feel sluggish again and gained amost 3 lbs ) Eating healthy but not exercising as it is the same old hikes and done with them - life is short and I want to move on ...... good idea to go for solo female 66 ?

you can take a ferry jadrolinija from split for like 6 euros to hvar max, you are talking about the katamaran ship its a faster option but more expensive

Just FYI - Split to Hvar has a ferry ride (2 hrs) and a catamaran ride (50 minutes). Ferry costs 5-7euro, depending on the season and catamaran is 18E flat. If you have time and want to enjoy some boat ride and nice views of the archipelago = cheap ferry. If you want to be there fast in a stuffy speedboat = expensive catamaran. If you are taking a car - then catamaran is off the table and youll pay an extra 50ish E for the car to come along each way on the ferry...

As far as a cost of living, starting January 2023 after Croatia switched to Euro as an official currency, prices went up significantly! All prices are rounded up to the closest higher number in Euros, so if conversion rate was 7, 54301kn for 1 Euro, per say, prices that were 10-12kn were rounded to 2 Euros. Bottom line is that people in Croatia ( not tourists who come to Croatia from countries with higher GDP ) are gonna be struggling. I use to live in the States and was making over $100k, in Croatia I make minimum wage as, for some reason none of my skills and school I've acquired state side is not recognized and appreciated here in Croatia. Minimum wage is just raised to about 560 Euros a month, roughly 600 USD. Try living off of that, right? Croatia is beautiful, people are great but government and politicians are way too corrupt for making Croatia a great place to live. Visit for sure!

So to correct you, as of May of 2024 minimum wage in Croatia is 668 Euros net, 840€ bruto. And yes, I owe my own business so I do pay myself minimum wage and my employees get twice my salary and all the benefits, Christmas bonus and all everything else I can give them legally. ( cca. 2600 Euros annually ). And also, in Croatia 10% of the people have a nice life and incomes, rest is struggling. If you live in Croatia and in touch with reality you would know.

Cool video , I'm a Croatian , if you plan to come back and especially if you plan to spend a larger quantity of time again I'd suggest you stay in the Istra and Kvarner area (Istra , Krk , Cres) There are plenty of more places to visit , a much better food to eat , ALOT more of inland exploring , ALOT of hiking if you wish , amasing towns such as Pula , Rovinj etc, and island of Krk and Cres are top noch to visit. I'd also say you'd go cheaper and an a bonus is you're really close to capital by car/bus which i would suggest you visit. Sretna putovanja !

I'm 73 years old so when I think of the old Soviet Union group of countries, I think "industrial," "grey," "polluted," "bureaucratic." I'd forgotten that some of these countries are part of the Mediterranean complex. I've been following my sister and brother-in-law via KZbin video walking tours, etc. on their 10-day Mediterranean tour. When I saw a walking tour of Split (they're going into Split tomorrow, June 30, 2024) and I saw a video beforehand, I was stunned. I told my sister that if she loved Corfu, Split will knock her socks off. What an absolutely beautiful place. The costs are sure a heck of a lot lower than here in St. George, UT!!

It's simply an observation made by someone in United States whose image of Communist countries was heavily colored by U. S. propaganda. I didn't mean to "babble." I have been planning a trip for my family of 5 to go there in May 2024 but now I may reconsider since prices will be much higher. What’s the problem with Croqtia joining Schengen? It is already EU country so this is even easier for travellers, also euro is currency from 1st of January 2023. Besides that almost everybody speaks English or German and Italian so it’s easy to get along with the locals. And Bosnia and Herzegovina is quite close for your “out of Schengen” tour.

Being half Croatian myself , I would never say that it's worth it. if you go to the coast or the islands if you want peace then it is worth it . Croatia has low paychecks and the prices of nearly everything are as high as in the rest of the EU where it's double paychesck for the same job. So why would you do that to yourself. You can always visit Croatia. It's sad as it is like that as it's a beautiful country with corrupt politics .

Croatia is great to visit , BUT the prices have skyrocketed the last 5-7 years. It used to be less expensive but overall since adopting the Euro last year, it's really the same price of Slovenia and Northern Italy now, so the pull to go there has dropped significantly. I don't know how the locals have adopted to these increases. Plitvice Lakes is a must see park, don't go mid summer, but no where like it and worth the out of the way visit.

We have been doing the same thing you have been doing for 2 1/2 years so far. We take pride in being cheap, but eating out once in 2 months? Y'all get the gold medal. I think that you should change the name of the video from COST OF LIVING IN CROATIA to DALMATIA because it is very diferent to live in region of Dalmatia and anything north in continent,first of all because the climate is diferent,Dalmatia is Mediteran and as soon as you pass the mountins it is continent and climate is similar in continent croatia or Austria or Hungary. relaxed way of living is typical for Dalmatia or all adriatic coastline countries. if you visit Italy you will find out that wery small amount of people speak english,diference here in croatia is that english laguage is learned in school from start to end of education ,thats way everybody speak and understand english. ferrys are expensive for visitors,not for residents,if you live on islands the price is simbolic. hospitals for croats and for tourists is almost free,if you have a job your employe pays for your healthcare ,they have to because its the law. prices of evrithing on the coastline is high because of tourism,and because of the climate,easy way of life,and low prices ,lot of foreginers buy houses and apartments in dalmatia and istria ,and because of that prices become too mutch for locals.and sad thing is hapening to local people ,young people have to migrate to western europe or north america because they cant buy a flat or apartment even if they can live two times,and in a few years locals literarly disapear and foren people replaced them. once again every time when you use word "affordable"it is for people from western europe or north america.trust me for locals it is not. one more thing,the cost of medications are not small ,they cost that mutch to produce,but in USA you pay fortunes for medications,Iknow people who send medications to their relatives or friends in USA and if you add cost of airtransport from here to USA its still cheaper

Hi, Karel. We didn't eat out much but going out for a beverage it didn't seem to be any more expensive than Romania. If it is more, it wouldn't be by much, maybe 10% probably more in Zagreb.

The reason they have so many pharmacies is because pensioners cannot afford simple drugs like ibruprohene or aspirin , in the UK you can buy these at Lidl Aldi or Tesco for 30cents . So because of this 25% of the healthcare budget is wasted on basic medicine , opticians are also everywhere because all pensioners can afford to do is watch state TV which as we know makes eye muscles lazy at a constant fixed field of vision . Some friends only get €170 a month pension after having 2 children , widowed and worked 25 years . Hidden Croatia that nobody talks about . Great videos guys , cheers .

You mentioned there are no longer term visas that are easy to get - did you look into the Digital Nomad Visa for Croatia? I realize your stay would not have required it. Greece and Spain (in Jan) appear to have something similar.

Honest opinion! We need to go back to Croatia. We don't feel like we did our best exploring that country. We had just spent 2 months traveling through Romania and needed downtime to work on editing videos. When we go back, we will do the boat cruise from Dubrovnik to Split. Spain is an amazing country that has everything that you look for, food, beaches, history, etc. The people were not the most hospitable, however. Thank you for watching and asking the question. Hi Guys, Great video as usual. Good idea to get your vaccinations in Croatia. I use a VPN here in Spain all the time to watch shows on BBC iplayer and 7play in Australia. I just read recently that Croatia has been approved to join Schenghen so no longer an alternative for the 90 day rule. One thing we have done when planning a day trip to places like Dubrovnik, Split, Malaga, Gibraltar, and pretty much any place with a port in Europe is to look up the cruise ship schedules and pick the days when only 1 or no ships will be in port. The low ship days do exist almost every week and are key to a more enjoyable visit!! Did you make it into Plitvice and Krka national parks? Fabulous places! Lots of wonderful areas if you have a car.
