Healthcare Abroad: My husband got a stomach bug in Mexico City, he was down for a couple of days. We went to the Farmacia and asked to see the doctor. The lady at the pharmacy took us next door to the medico. We filled out a short paper, waited a few minutes, and went to see the medico. He asked about symptoms, gave my husband a physical exam and gave us prescriptions for antibiotics, probiotics and pain killers. We went back to the pharmacy,they pulled the order together, it cost $28 total and took about 30 minutes. The medico was free, but I gave him 20 pesos just because. Urgent care in the US is $150 just to be seen.

I had the exact same thoughts as Carrie during COVID. You think "it will be there" - then it wasn't. Then all of a sudden I'm almost 50 and the sense of urgency came in hot. I was in Mexico at the time, but I never intended to be there for a continuous 4 years. So when things got back to normal, I started to plan for Europe. Sold everything (again) , packed up me and the cat...now here I am. On the French Riviera at the moment .

Another excellent video!! My wife and I are talking about this more and more. She is actually getting pretty excited about the prospect of it. We are looking at starting four years from now when our youngest child is finished with college and off our payroll. 😳 For a while my wife wanted to just move somewhere like Italy since that is where her family is from, but she is becoming more interested in this for at least the first few years. Her requirements right now are that she wants to be able to flush her toilet paper, she needs AC because of her hot flashes and good cheap wine. She has also asked about having a base. Since I’m the planner I just need to figure that out. 😎 With your help that is much easier. Thank you!!

I, like Carrie, do all of our accommodation planning and booking so I like to know where we will be so we can start looking for flight deals and flight options so you don’t check out of your hotel at noon and your flight doesn’t leave until 11 pm or arrive somewhere at 5 am and you can’t check in until 2 pm.

Thanks so much for sharing in such detail…. Great information! One of the biggest things holding us back from a quasi-form of what you are doing is family. Both my boys and their children live within 15 minutes of us. I see our grands every week to two weeks. I am looking forward to birthday parties, weekend soccer games and dance recitals. It’s funny but I wouldn’t have a problem not seeing my boys more than a few times a year(lol) but I hate to miss out on the daily/weekly things with the littles. Was that an issue at the beginning for you? Do you get used to it? Btw, I think our families would be like yours and be very supportive. Love watching all your adventures!

Hey guys. I'm not a slow traveller, but you certainly have inspired me. Watching your adventures gave me the courage to give Thailand a try, so for 5 months I was there to see if I could retire there. I am back in Australia to sell the rest of my belongings and head back. I have a retirement visa for Thailand but I am planning on visiting Vietnam and other places in S/E Asia. I am paying rent here in Aus $2400 AUD per month plus electric and internet. I crunched the numbers and on a pension (which i wont qualify for another 9 years and like you said, i might not even be here by then) I could not afford to pay rent in Australia. So, I decided to get out of Dodge now. Like you said, I wasn't a tourist there, but living like I normally would at home. Life is easy, so much easier there. Rented a lovely condo for $427 per month. If I can do this, anyone can. I had not travelled in over 30 years and never solo. Thanks for the inspo and great info. Stay awesome! Also, which hospital did you go to in Thailand for your medical packages? Thanks in advance

I think the scariest times are when you have enough that you don’t necessarily need to keep adding to your pot but you’re also not exactly in a position that you can draw from your pot . We've had to buy a new AC system for both of our past 2 homes after they died on us.... in TX after 7 yrs owning house (2 12 seer units died at the same time in JULY) and in FL (one specialty marine capable unit due to our proximity to the ocean). SURPRISE!!!! $15k expense during the summer each time, with us in the houses less than 7 yrs each occasion. NOT an option... heat waves both times. Hubby and I are busy planning for our US exit date, 2 yrs from now and I cannot wait! Love your thought process. I know if we consulted a financial advisor they'd be having a heart attack but I really don't care. You never know if you don't take a little risk at least!

We've gotten very good at planning out what we will need and tend to now be able to spend it by the time we leave. You could also exchange any left at the airport for the next country you're going to.

Cigna Global with the US extension. We spend about $140 a month each. The price can vary depending on age, deductible, etc... but it is good coverage.

Thanks for your video... Very insightful, I've been crunching the #'s since /22 trip to Azores, then /23 trip to the algarve, next week it's Costa del Sol Spain. I ask myself "why am I still here?" And not OVER THERE every travel, nomads etc I watch that are🇺🇲... It's always the same thing... Health care, and taxes ! Taxes and healthcare!! That's just not something I EVER even think about living in🇨🇦. I'n fact I'm pissed I have to even buy travel insurance. I'm 67 and I've never ever had to wait for any procedure. Neither has anyone I know family or friends. The idea from talking heads and media click baste content about wait lists etc, is annoying. I only ever hear it's a concern from American retired or nomads traveling or living abroad. Everyone else just expects health care at reasonable prices or it's covered with no co-pay or deductable. It's a no brainer. I sure couldn't live my life with all that uncertainly that's for sure. Enjoying your new content. Maybe I'll finally stay over there. Very tempting that's for sure.

We dropped our US Based insurance when we left the US as well as you did. When you come back to the USA, Public Transportation is not the same as overseas. How do you address auto insurance when you are back in the USA?
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 3 ай бұрын
The cars that we borrow are insured no matter who is driving. This is only for a short term. We don't drive much so it isn't a problem.
@kristinkiddy9079

Be careful about having a break in car insurance if you ever plan to have a car again in the us. You will be treated as a brand new driver. A non-owner policy runs about $500 a year and keeps you in good standing. It also comes in handy if you want to rent a car in the states.
@RickandTee
@RickandTee 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the warning. Since we will be gone for several years, we did the math and figured it was worth it to be treated like a new driver when we return. As far as renting a car in the US, our credit card carries primary insurance on rentals if that is ever needed. Car (and health) insurance is such a rip off and they really make it overly expensive to carry.

I hope you still maintain a driver only (non-owner) car insurance policy. If you ever need car insurance in the USA again, you will be treated as a new driver if your insurance lapses for more than 6 months.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 3 ай бұрын
Since we travel full time and long term carrying a policy we won't use isn't really cost effective. Even if in the end we have to pay more to reinstate, it still will be far less than what we'd pay for insurance all the years we weren't using it. Cheers!!

Don't look to Canada for any health care. Over 33% of Canadians do not have a primary care doctor anymore, according to a CBC article lately. We get much of our health care outside of Canada in southeast Asia.

The one thing you don’t mention. Yes, it costs more to live in USA, but here you were still working, saving, putting money into SS etc. Over time, that is a LOT of money you are missing out on. Now, you are spending, but not earning.

Very true but don't forget we did pay into SS for 30+ years before we decided to travel. What we are doing now can't be replaced with the amount that we would be adding. We are also happy to say that we are earning money to help supplement our lifestyle. We have viewers like yourself that watch and often comment to thank for that!!
