Great video-as always. We keep worrying about inflation during travel, but then get sticker shock while back in NYC and realize inflation is also something we would endure if we stayed home. So Chile here we go! On a separate note, today October 1 is our one year anniversary of starting slow travel. It has been a phenomenal time starting in Eastern Europe and now in Patagonia Chile. I want to thank Brian and Carrie. We watched your videos for a year before embarking on our journey. Great info as always :-) a little surprised though to not see you mention the timing of travel. Avoiding peak season travel in key locations is a time-tested way to reduce cost. Not suggesting someone endure the monsoon season in southeast asia to reduce costs, but with a little planning can find those times that are much cheaper before or after the peak season travel. ❤ the channel, and continued happy travels to you both!!

As a slow traveler I’m definitely picking my places to visit that I get more value for the Dollar. Some places I might want to go but they just don’t provide the value to me. Sightseeing is low on my things to do in my slow travel. I prefer to stay as long as my visa on arrival is good for. I don’t care to pay or jump through hoops to do visa extensions.

Medellin, Columbia was a pleasant surprise! Much cheaper than Panama where we reside half of the year. One example, 2 margaritas, 1 beer, and a bottle of water was $8.14. It's so beautiful and green and about a million places to dine out.

I laughed when you mentioned Moose Jaw. I’m from Regina, a neighbouring city. Moose Jaw is a quaint little city with lots to see and do. There is a thermal spa in the city with hotel which a draw but not cheap. Just fun to say you’ve been to Moose Jaw!!

My wife is from Bangkok. We try to go there once a year. I haven't noticed the price on lodging going up, especially in Bangkok where we stay. But it is not a tourist place either. Now airfare has jumped a lot. But instead of traveling from the west coast we are now living and traveling from the middle of the US. Just booked around trip tickets for 1300 a piece.

We intentionally booked outside of the city center to keep costs down and to have a quieter place to sleep in. We ensure that we know what the transportation options are ahead of booking there. We never rent car's, we do public transportation, so we stay in places with busses, trains, subways etc. We stay in most areas for a month also to keep costs down.

I like the new three months away and then home idea. You are right about prices going up. Even here in Spain, they went up but now seem to be stable. The problem is that once they go up, they don't come down. As for airfares, my Ryanair flights are double what I paid after COVID. So far, I am enjoying the Mexico videos and looking forward to your take on Mexico City. I enjoyed it immensely in 1986, but I am sure it is much changed.

I spent 2 months traveling in Europe in 2019 prepandemic and 6 weeks this summer. Prices have easily gone up 50%, maybe more in 5 years. It definitely changes your travel options. Here are some strategies that I use that weren’t mentioned in the video. One, I only eat twice a day and try to get a nice big breakfast included with the hotel or B&B. Two, I use credit card points and try to be strategic with my cards to maximize their value. Three, I use public transport and avoid renting a car which can be a budget buster.

I completely feel your pain, we were in Mexico in winter of 2022 when the value of the peso spiked versus the US and Canadian dollars and it almost tripled our budget by the end of the winter! The cost of living increases have definitely changed the way we travel now, last year we mainly stayed with friends all over Canada and the US, and this winter we are working in the Philippines and doing a bit if traveling around South East Asia/Australia/New Zealand from there. Luckily we have friends in a few of those places we can stay with or even some of that would be off the table!

Thankful that our pensions and Social Security are COLA-adjusted. Makes inflation, especially abroad, not a huge issue for us. Traveling abroad while retired can still much cheaper than living in the States. I think the key is having a budget that is well below your means so that inflation doesn’t disrupt you plans.

Love your videos and you convinced us to go to Thailand this past Feb. and we are going back this Feb. You have also convinced us to try Turkey. Funny you mention Moose Jaw, we live in Regina which is 40 minutes away. Do not visit in the winter though - summer is lovely. Highly recommend Calgary, Banff, Jasper area once it recovers from fires.

Probably not saying something you don’t already know, but if you’re flying back to the states from Mexico you can save money by flying to Tijuana airport and crossing into San Diego straight from the airport. Regional flights within Mexico are usually cheaper. Once you get to the border take an uber to the San Ysidro trolley then a quick ride to the Middletown station. From there it’s a quick shuttle to the airport. Once there Alaska air can be a good value.

Great to hear how you've adjusted to inflation. There are always ways to modify your travels to accommodate the increase in costs, but still have an enjoyable time. Balancing out more expensive places with more cost-affordable places during the year always helps. I'm glad you mentioned how slowing down your travel is an effective way to reduce costs. I think a lot of people don't realize that because they just think about how much a short vacation costs and then extrapolate it to a longer trip, and it doesn't work that way at all. Great you are using the buses in Mexico. They actually have a very good bus network and the buses themselves are quite comfortable. Cheers!

Enjoyed your video and commentary. We spent 2 years in Mexico 2022-2024. Every time we went to the grocery store prices would go up little by little. Traveling southern Europe we've seen it also. We spent August in Istanbul. You're right on with the inflation there. I think it's gone up about 70% this last year. The days of Turkey being dirt cheap are long gone. Still a great value for the cultural experience. We actually changed are September plans to Saranda over the Turkish coast because of inflation and the new short term rental law.

Having budget travelled in my 20’s , the one thing I will not do now is miss things I want to see or do. I will cut back on food and accomodation but will do the balloon ride over Cappadocia.

We agree with Brian, it can often be more expensive to make a meal than buy one, especially if you are in a low price area. We travel 6 months and go home for 6 months each year. We never include the cost of food in our budget for 2 reasons. Firstly, you have to eat anyway where ever you are and secondly, because we are from the UK there are very few places where food is actually going to cost more than at home. Great video.

Purchasing a property in Portugal was something I considered to do when I retire, but I can’t do now since cost of apartments went a lot since 2018. Then I started watching slow travel like yours almost from the beginning. At that time, I was thinking that I learned something different way of retiring and travel. Not only that slow travel is more affordable, there’s also the flexibility of moving around more without paying for two accommodations and visiting other parts of the world. Now, not only I’m saving less for retirement due to inflation, like you said the cost of travel has gone up a lot. Hopefully by the time I retire, things will be more settled and I can see the world somehow.

Portugal has become difficult the last year. The government has made some changes in policy. You can still obtain an extended visa rather easily if you wish to stay longer than 90 days.

We have noticed the grocery prices in Romania have definitely gone up. My MIL is on a fixed budget (300 Euros per month) from my FIL's pension (she still gets a small pension after he passed). She also gets assistance from the government to purchase meat. It is barely enough for her to live on now so we send her money every month.

We have heard that prices went up in Croatia after entering the Schengen last year. We are not sure that is true, but you have to wonder if the same is happening in Romania?

@@BrianandCarrie I would venture a guess and say yes, same with Romania. So much needs to be done yet to switch from the RON/Lei to the Euro. The EU is investing about 80 billion a year into Romania to get it ready. Interestingly, Romania's GDP is 4x other EU nations since joining the EU.

We are currently on a month long housesit in Ontario, where our kids live. We return for the summer months and then head to our condo in Bucerias, Mexico for the winter. We have a campervan, we housesit, (London at Christmas!) and we visit my brother on Vancouver Island (bonus!). Canada has plenty for you to offer! You can certainly be in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan for a deeper discount. Hope that you like junior hockey! Banff would not save you any money as it is a tourist mecca in Western Canada. But certainly Canada has a lot to see, and do, both touristy and not. The currency exchange for you from US to Canada will be in your favour to be sure (by close to 40%). Your transportation costs will be substantially less from Washington. Inflation of course is a big factor and you bring forth some good ideas on combatting the effects. Great suggestions. Continue enjoying Mexico and the tacos!

Inflation hit everywhere but I've been able to lower my living costs in the US so much that it rivals Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe. If my goal were to experience a better quality of life, it would make sense to travel outside the US. But if my goal is to save money, I might as well stay where I am. I've been to 40 countries since 1990 so there aren't many places I want to go anymore. It was fun while it lasted.

We have really noticed how much more expensive travel/accommodation is etc id say 35% since 2020. We’ve tried house sitting but it only works if it’s not with dogs as they’re hard work. Also insurance has increased a lot. SE Asia is much cheaper than going to USA so we’ve pivoted towards that area instead. We’re based in the UK. I wonder if you’re also seeing prices rise due to the weaker dollar maybe? It’s certainly very different to 4 years ago.

I’ve found horses/cats etc make life a lot easier for us anyway 😅 also there’s often a lot of cleaning involved… as we have higher standards of living than many home owners provide.

You could easily adjust I'f did decide to go to se Asia and go for 5 month and change it up a bit, bellingham is nice from April to Oct as u know so there's flexibility there and living costs haven't changed a great deal in say thailand from year over year so really the only major cost is that flight and Phillipines air flies direct now seattle to manila.. Carry on..

Good informative video. Thank you. I think there was not a real increase in Air travel going to Thailand. I got a return ticket for my wife and I for $2340 ($1170/person) from Detroit to Bangkok. Travel time is 10th of November returning on 26th December via Turkish Airline! I think this is a real bargain! Not sure if the fare was cheaper before

Gen X like me are either slowing down or retiring, hence travelling. New generations have zero confidence in the future and are also travelling more. Solutions; 1. Stay invested. The stock market should continue following inflation higher (higher profits), although recession usually a risk (and then lower prices…). 2. Visit 2nd cities. Lyon instead of Paris. Bragga instead of Lisbon. Etc. 3. You’re lucky you already visit the most popular cities and countries. Maybe now is time to visit the less beaten path, like Africa? 4. Slow travel… very slow 😅 5. Volunteering and woofing expériences?

I guess you know to take US dollars and exchange on the street in Argentina. It's called the dolar blue rate and is significantly better than the official rate. Rates vary from city to city and bank note to bank note. $100 bill is best. Rates at border towns are worst

Is it inflation or demand? This channel shares information about the places you guys traveled to, which is free advertising for that place. This entices people to visit. Also, there are several channels promoting travel. When there is a demand, prices increase. Several cities worldwide are complaining about tourists, and some of the influx results from KZbin. Some of it could be inflation, and some of it could be greed. I'm not suggesting that you should stop or that it's your fault. It is just that not everything is inflation.

Good video guys. Prices have gone up all over the world, it is a fact of life, Canada is insane, we never go to restaurants in Canada anymore, we have not noticed prices have gone up in Japan (we travel often), and Cambodia and Vietnam are still so cheap it is not even worth calculating the extra costs (if any), Thailand has definitely gone up over the last 4 years, but nothing like Canada. One of the reason we are moving to Hua Hin Thailand is the cost of living in Canada, although we can afford life here in Canada, as we have no mortgage and do n ot go to restaurants, we can have a much better quality of life moving to SE ASia, no comparison really. We paid $2500 USD last year from Vancouver Canada to Bangkok on Japan airlines, this October we are paying $1300 USD for the same trip on ANA airlines, so not everything is more expensive. Our condo is more this year, $500 USD compared to $350 last year in Hua Hin, but we are renting a far nicer condo this year. Thailand still wins hands down over anywhere else in the world, there are cheaper places, but I do not want to live there. mexico is definitely out for us, way to dangerous. Cambodia is very cheap (except for restaurants), but I do not want to live there. For dental work Thailand easily wins, we got work done in Mexico 6 years ago and the costs for the exact same work in Hua Hin Thailand were less than Mexico 6 years ago.

SE Asia is the only safe haven left but don't count out Mexico. It isn't nearly as cheap as SE Asia or as it used to be but it's not as dangerous as you might think. Thank you for watching!!! 😊

@@BrianandCarrie We can agree to disagree about Mexico, I think you guys like Mexico because it is close to the USA, and flights are cheaper and shorter, for you a win win. For my wife and I we have family in the Philippines, we are closer in Thailand, we do not need to be close to Canada after we move, we plan to actually move to Thailand, and not travel around much except for SE Asia. Flights are very cheap in SE Asia. Everyone is different, we are OK with a trip back to Canada every 2 years or so.

Unfortunately the dollar may weaken as well. As Fed cuts rates your dollar may not go as far as my guess is past 3 years was least expensive travel we’ll see for a long time.

@@BrianandCarrie Thank you. Not sure how. I like your channel. We travel a good amount. I was a currency trader in Chicago a long time and currency prices across the spectrum look pretty low. Was about 27-29 years ago that it was around these levels. Hopefully dollar stays strong, but I’m guessing it’ll weaken over time.

Also Thailand has a new DTV VIsa, 5 years multiple entry for 6 months at a time, game changer. My wife and I both have the new DTV Visa. As an American I would not travel to any Muslim country, even as a Canadian, Muslim countries are out. The current war(s) make it a very dangerous prospect

Southern Thailand and Malaysia are both predominantly Muslim and they are our favourite destinations. Both are safer than Canada.

What they do is they buy the packages from the resorts, the airlines, the cruise ships and then they mark them up and some at a higher price where we what we do is we contract out to the same businesses and we help promote and sell their packages for them and they give it to us and then they just pay us a commission for helping them out.

Always great info for thought 👍 I'm starting to wonder what I can do to create more assets that will provide additional revenue. We are 4 years+ out. Putting 40% of our income towards ETFs and 10%towards our whole life policies to cover our self insured strategy. Learning nocode automations to create websites on large scale. What assets can you think of?

All great additional assets.
