Vietnamese food is lighter, fresher, more delicate in flavor so it's not as spicy or heavily flavored such as in Thai (or Lao) foods. The thing about Vietnamese food is the abundance or platters of fresh greens and herbs and all the myriad dips that go with each meal. The food is more interactive and customizable to your palate in that there's a lot of wrapping things up yourself after adding the ingredients you want and then you can add peppers (usually they have at lease one form of pepper present such as fresh, dried, pickled, chili sauce, etc.) or whatnot to make it your own. Thais do have great food, but I think Viets have more variety due to the French and other influences. Thais have had a huge head start on tourism and perfecting their food for tourists vs Vietnam which spent years fighting various countries throughout its history. Keep in mind, the US also placed an embargo on Vietnam so they were handicapped for a long time with the people just scrounging around for food, never mind trying to make a living off tourism. The US also dropped more bombs on their country than all of WWII...so between the bombs, agent Orange, various other poisons to deforest the land, etc., they've had to spend time and resources to rebuild everything whilst Thailand was enjoying life. I think when you look at it from that perspective, it's rather unfair to compare the 2 countries side-by-side.

We enjoyed Vietnamese food very much but to this day prefer Thai food. I think we just both really enjoy the more intense flavors and the heat. I did really enjoy all the wonderful fresh herbs and greens to add to my soup, so tasty 😍

Perfecting their food for tourists?😂 if so why many foreigners say Thai food is too spicy for them( but eat it anyway) Saying Vietnam have more variety of food than Thailand is so funny.
@doodahgurlie
@doodahgurlie Жыл бұрын
@@vassanab4243 Yes, perfecting their food for tourists palates. I bet when they make papaya salads at home, it's hotter and use of shrimp paste is higher. With that being said, it's possible that their palates have also changed somewhat due to the mass tourism they've catered to for the past 50 years. I was born and spent my younger years in Laos many many moons ago, so I'm familiar with their papaya salad (using them for an example as I cannot recall the Thai one specifically, but I'm pretty sure it was similar back then). It's hot and they go heavy on the shrimp paste and whole crab, something that would scare foreigners whom are not familiar (heck, it scares me when it's made by a real Lao person in the US and it's much stinkier than I'm used to eating when we lived in Laos - but still delicious once you get over the big pieces of crab body parts and the heavy fermented seafood smells). And my family lived in Thailand for a year after leaving Laos. Gary Butler made videos in Vietnam where he's tried peppers at a few places and said how the peppers in Vietnam are hotter than the ones in Thailand. But no, Viets aren't into hot foods like the Laos and Thais. They often have either fresh, dried, pickled, or chili sauce on the table for you to customize the heat for yourself. The Central part of Vietnam where the food is know to be great is where they like heat a bit more than other parts.

Great video! I recently went to Thailand and Vietnam as well. They were similar but quite different :P I also think Thailand had more food variety and is more to my taste, perhaps I am more used to eating Thai food from being in the US. However, the Vietnamese culture is unbeatable! There are so much history in Vietnam and to see the people living in harmony after going through such tough time doing the war is surreal. Vietnamese people are also the most welcoming no matter where you’re from. I went to so many moms and pops shops, although we don’t speak the same languages, the aunties and uncles always try to take care of you! Love watching how they set up shops in the little ally with big bowls of soup and ingredients! Sitting on the side of the road and eating is another level of experience. Overall I think Thailand is better catered for tourists and their food is better in a sense that it is more known to the rest of the world, but Vietnamese culture is unreal and the controlled chaos is something you can only experience in person 😂 Initially when I got to vietnam I find myself missing Thailand, but after the trip vietnam so all I can think about… but both places are amazing and would definitely go back!

I think for many Westerners, a food tour in each city is a must as I've seen so many not know how/what to order nor do they know how to eat it properly (eating it wrong doesn't give you the proper flavor profile). Heck, do several food tours with different companies in each of the bigger cities. Tell the tour guides your preferences as far as the types of food you want to try (foreigner-friendly vs adventurous vs local favorites and so on...if you're a texture person and don't like ooey-gooey types of foods like the che buoi (gooey dessert soup with pomelo), let them know. I've seen a lot of food tour videos out of Hanoi that were great. I get a chuckle out of the food tour "Flora and Note" went on, but they did say they told the guide they wanted to eat what the locals eat (which apparently included adventurous stuff), but "Sammy and Tommy", "Adventures of A+K", "This Food Bangz", "TravelHolics", and "MomDuty" had great tours in Hanoi. "Chase and Shelbs" and "The Jo Life" had great ones in HCMC and "Steph and Pete" had an awesome one in Hoi An. I think overall, the best food can be found in Hoi An as it's all concentrated in one tiny area and a lot of the food is from the Central region, which is known for amazing food. I would always suggest foreigners go for things like com tam, bun cha, bun thit nuong, bun bo Hue, bun rieu, nem nuong, banh xeo, banh khot (many are too similar to miniature banh khot so look for ones that are crispy on the outside but creamy in the center), bo ne, bo kho, banh cuon, pho ga tron, etc.

If you like heavy, deep in favors then Thai food is for you. Keep in my, it also come with high cholesterol. healthy, balance on favors, green and fresh then Vietnamse food if there for you. Don't forget, some part of Vietnam as the central area offer more kick and stronger favor in foods. If you only know Banh My and Pho, then you not really know Vn. There are hundreds kind of soups and thousand dishes. Foods tours in each parts of Vietnam might help to experience foods in different area. Other things as transportation, accommodation as such Vietnam can't complete with Thailand because of long history with wars after wars. For my preference, for foods I will go with Vietnamese foods, but for a place to stay/live I will pick Thailand.

Thailand has a more advanced tourism industry and they cater to westerners better because tourism is a big part of their economy. Vietnam caters more to Vietnamese living around the world, and they want to grow their economy by manufacturing and not by tourism. So they may not care as much about what westerners think.

Nice video and insights. Food taste will always be subjective, of course. I have been in Vietnam for a few months, and have noticed big differences between restaurants, depending on where they are. For example, I went to a noodle shop in Hoi An (high tourist concentration) that was highly rated on Google. The noodles were okay, but they didn't bring out any chile other spices and salad/vegetables, which you will always find on the tables of more local restaurants. I am guessing that they are catering to more cautious eaters, and kind of assume that foreigners can only tolerate bland food. At a typical, local Vietnamese restaurant, there is plenty of chile, lime and spice to add yourself, according to your preference. I kind of like this because compared to Thailand, I have control over how spicy my meal will be. I encourage people to wander out (no need to go far) and find hole-in-the-wall restaurants, that have more flavor, and which are MUCH cheaper, as well. You can get big bowls of delicious, flavorful noodles for about USD $1. I have eaten like this for months, and have never been sick, by the way. Enjoy your adventures!

There are a lot of things to see and do in HCMC when you go back. There are also a lot of food items in Vietnam that aren't as famous as in Thailand, but they might change your mind about which country has the better food (or not). When you go back, definitely go to Cambodia. It's amazing!

If you have time, check out "Shot in the Dark Travel" as they loved Vietnam so much, they kept making visa runs. They did a lot of interesting stuff all over Vietnam and said it was their favorite country. Also "Adventures of A+K" did a great Vietnam series when they chose Vietnam as their first Asian country to visit and said it exceeded their expectations. I know "Flora and Note" enjoyed it (Flora who is a cook or chef said the seafood restaurant they visited in Danang was probably the best thing she ever ate) and they were in Phu Quoc with "2Passports 1Dream" whom were quietly vacationing there even though they were in Vietnam last year. Please do food tours when you're in Vietnam so you can get a better culinary experience. Everyone who's gone on them loved them and it teaches you how to eat the foods properly.

Very interesting video comparing what are probably the two most pleasant countries to be assuming you have a bit of money. I am from NYC but living in Vietnam with my wife for thirty years having first come by way of Thailand in 1988. We have been to Thailand many times and love it there as well. Note that northern Vietnam including Hanoi has much cooler winter months and so be careful if looking for tropical weather. I think there are many super flavorful food options in Vietnam that you are missing out on if eating much bánh mi and pho but honestly speaking I myself really like Thai and also Indian food which can be found here. We live in a normal neighborhood close to the center of Saigon where there are plenty of 7-11s and many other franchise places like Family Mart. The weather in Saigon is truly tropical all year with pleasant dry weather all of the winter months and with rainy season all summer and fall but like you mentioned usually afternoon deluges of about an hour or two and with most mornings pleasantly sunny. Hard to believe now but I have not been out of Vietnam in nearly four years but look forward to another trip to Phuket (Thailand) which is so beautiful.

Many years back when Thailand had already been a hot spot for tourists around the world, Vietnam was still shutting it doors after the war. Thailand has been ahead of Vietnam for many years. That is not an excuse for Vietnam but it actually takes time to establish a professional tourism industry throughout the country. Vietnam has a starting point much later and hopefully they will catch up with their neighbours. Convenient store is not a traditional thing in many South East Asian countries and was introduced to Vietnam way later than Thailand. 7eleven is not really popular in Vietnam compared to Vinmart and Circle K. Vinmart convenient stores can be easily found in many cities in Vietnam. It is owned by a Vietnamese consortium. A part from Vinmart, other Japanese and Korean convenient stores are also more popular than 7eleven. They do serve hot or take away food. Vietnam still has a long way to go and lots of things to learn from its neighbouring countries. I know it is hard to have a completely convicing comparison because all comparisons are relative but you have done a good job. 🖒.

As a Vietnamese who has left the country almost 30 years and only come back to visit one in a while, I prefer Vietnam stays the way it was with less convenience stores but more small shops and street vendors. I as well love to go to the traditional markets then visit the supermarket. Those old atmosphere become less and least every time I visit and will completely gone one day. How sad.

Hello Brian/Carrie, I love your videos and do follow your videos of Asia. You have it right on comparing the two incredible countries in SE Asia. I just wanted to mention that Thailand has a leg up on Vietnam because the people have a different mindset. You aren't likely to get scammed or taken advantage of in comparison to Vietnam. A perfect example is if you leave your things alone you are likely to get it back in Thailand whereas you will get taken in Vietnam. Thai's believe in Karma compared to Vietnamese, lol. Beers and seafood goes to Vietnam but food/massages goes to Thailand. Accommodations is definitely Vietnam but transportation goes to Thailand. Now that you've seen both amazing countries, give Laos and Cambodia a try so you can be taken back 30yrs in time. Btw, Lao beer is the best in Asia. This would be an adventure beyond your comfort zone but a life experience you'll never forget. Hope to follow more of your adventures, take care, cheers 🙏.

That's weird. I find Thailand much more touristy and therefore scam heavy than Vietnam. I feel like a normal customer in Vietnam whereas in Thailand, I feel like a big giant tourist ready to be taken advantage of... For example, the cabs... In Thailand, good luck getting anyone to use a meter. They'll give you a personal price. Vietnam has it's thieves but there's no real organized or ingrained tourist theft going on. Happens, but not that much.

You should try Da Lat, in the Central Highlands. Maybe take an Easy Rider tour and travel on the back of a tour guide's motorbike to see places that most tourists would not see. I lived there for 6 years. I was a guide and I have many friends still there. All great guys who speak English, and really know their country and its history. You could even take a tour from Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City or anywhere, really. My first tour was from Ho Chi Minh back to Da lat. It was three days and we showed our new friends so much along the way. There's no rushing around, just traveling on motorbikes, where you're free to take as many pictures and videos as you like and enjoy the ride...You ride during the day and stay at a hotel each night, included in the price. The guides take you for dinner, you sleep, and then off again the next morning. Things you will see include: peanut farms, rubber plantations, many waterfalls (of course), weasel coffee farms, mushroom growers, coffee plantations, Vietnam war sites of historic interest, and many other things. It's quite an experience. I too, was not fond of Hanoi. It seems that people get much nicer the further south you travel in Vietnam. I hope that you enjoy your next trip.

Great food, very scenic and interesting, the river trip to the budha cave is worthwhile. I don’t like videos comparing countries. Vietnam and Thailand are their own unique countries that have their own distinct languages, histories and politics. Even the food is really different and nuanced even though they share the some same ingredients. I think this is a very narrow minded view point to ask the question which countries are better. Just appreciate each country for what it is and don’t minimize countries by comparing them just because to you they seem the similar or share the same geographical region.

Just finished up 18 days in Thailand and LOVED it! We enjoyed the beach vibe in Phi Phi and Phuket along with the green lush mountain vibe of Chiang Mai- all amazing for different reasons. Looking to head back to Southeast Asia again in March. If we loved those places, can you recommend places we might enjoy in Vietnam (or anywhere) that would give us both of those very different vibes? Also- are affordable massages as available in Vietnam?

Hi Guys great video thank you, both countries are on our list to visit. What time of the year were you there and how did you find the heat/humidity? We would love to check out the Air BNBs you stayed at if you wouldn’t mind tagging them. Happy travels 😊

Hi Steve! So sorry for the late reply, we were off the grid for the last week on a family cruise ☺. We were in these areas from January to April. The humidity didn't get bad until March, but it was consistently quite hot. From what we are hearing, the heat and humidity are just something that comes with traveling in these locations, some months being a bit less. The Airbnb's we stayed in are linked in the description for the video in the specific area you are looking. Cheers!!

Just love watching your blog. I just visited Thailand in April 2023. I am so ready to permanently retire in Thailand & South Korea, but I'm stuck at home Seattle like being in prison because of my commitment to caring for my elder parents. It's a DAILY frustration & feels like I'm dying because I can't leave for permanent retiring.

Hi Brian & Carrie, we have recently started to watch your videos as we were trying to find out about Thailand. We liked your videos and the details that you provide with unbiased views and from your personal experience... besides the fact that Brian reminds me of myself (I just need beer all the time :P) but yeah I really like that you guys show the prices of it wherever you go... as for me it a huge deal breaker TBH :) will catch up soon some time later..until then, ciao!

What a fantastic video, loved your observations, iv just seen a comment already that says they’re similar but different, it’s a difficult thing to describe. I agree with MOST of your comments except I’ll fight any man who says that a Bahn Mi isn’t the best food on the planet and that Witch Piss Chaing is better than Leo 😆 That’s any man apart from Brian obviously (looks a big fella) We did laugh because when we were in Hanoi we said exactly the same thing if you hadn’t had your senses already numbed by S E Asia it would be totally overwhelming. It’s our favourite place now and we’ve booked to go back again pretty much as soon as we landed. I could keep going for hours - great vid - look forward to seeing you in HCMC. One thing we did which was THE best thing iv ever done and would definitely recommend was a motorcycle food tour - the adrenaline going through Saigon on the back of a bike in that madhouse 👍 Cheers to you both 🍺🍺

Hi! So sorry for the late reply, we were off the grid for the last week on a family cruise ☺. Ha ha, Bahn Mi's were great, but we just reached our limit 😉. Cheers 🍻

My opinion: Food - Vietnam hands down. I love Thai food too but Vietnamese food to me offer a bit more compared to Thai or Chinese. Infrastructure- Thailand Healthcare- Thailand Affordability- (in big cities if you go out) Thailand English speaking- Vietnam (I feel generally Vietnamese will understand better than Thai) Friendliness- Both Conclusion: I say Thailand

Having been to both countries, i can say Vietnam is absolutely amazing. It has the best people. Very organized. Very cultured. You don't have to worry about getting scammed. And people are extremely cooperative.. The only thing Thailand is better at is the food variety.

Great video!! One thing I would add is that health care is better in Thailand. There are pharmacies everywhere and it's easy to get most things without a prescription. Dental care is excellent and so is massage. Vietnam has the best coffee in Asia, although Chiang Mai is catching up. Also, the Gulf of Thailand is quite sheltered compared to the much more exposed and rainier coast of Vietnam. Da Nang is cooler in January and February, while there isn't much escape from the heat in Thailand except for a very short "winter" in Chiang Mai. Both places are wonderful in their own way. Vietnam is full or ancient and modern history. I'm really enjoying your channel! Have you checked out Hua Hin in Thailand? Much better value than the islands.

Thai food is popular in the US for a reason. It is like say, Italian food, it is found almost everywhere in the US why? because it is great food and it satisfies many different palates. If Vietnamese food were that great, we'd have many more Vietnamese restaurants here in the US. Sounds like the overall prices are a bit cheaper in VN, but food is much better in Thailand. Thank you for this post. I have been to Thailand and plan to visit Vietnam soon. Now I know what to expect.

Brian and Carrie, you guys are fantastic. I love your video review. Songkran is the best time to visit Thailand if you wanna experience the heat and the water festival from April 13th to April 15th. On top of that, it's the right time for tropical fruit season. Mangoes, Durian & Mangosteen are peak in April & May.
