Just did this quick fix today!!! Works perfect for now but I’m still gonna take it to a mechanic and get the timing belt, water pump, and pulleys changed for the long term fix!!! Thanks again for the info!!!

I just used your video and did mine! Did it exactly like you showed and my 2015 Honda pilot went from sounding like it was ready to die to purring like a kitten !! I can’t thank you enough for this video!

Thank you for this video! I just replaced the tensioner on my 2014 Odyssey by following your method. FYI on that model the oil sensor is inboard of the tensioner and not in the way, so i didn't have to touch the oil sensor. I will say it was very tricky to reach both hands around the control arm and up to the tensioner, it also took me a while to get the lower bolt in, i turned the crank pulley in very small increments about ten times. I'm very much an amateur, the whole process took me about 90 minutes trying to get the bolts out and back in again. But the result was a quiet engine for only the cost of the part. Great video!

Great video! Thank you. This video inspired me to go ahead and tackle this problem that I'd been noticing for a while. Easy peasy (mostly). Even easier, because on my 2013 Odyssey, the oil pressure sensor is actually behind the tensioner instead of in front like on this Pilot. Very helpful.

Great video. Took a lot longer than expected to line up the bottom bolt, even with a few small turns of the crank. Once I got that, the rest was easy. Thanks for posting!

Thanks bro for this video. Saved me a bunch of time, headache and money. It solved the tapping noise issue! Like you mentioned, putting on the bottom bolt first and rotating the crank shaft are key else it won't go in. For anyone doing this, it does take some fitness to get the first and second bolts to line up, and it doesn't require a lot of pressure to put the tensioner in place.

Do you pull the pin after install??
@kurleedaddee
@kurleedaddee Ай бұрын
@@masonj1484 no, before the install. It took care of the sound. I only ran it for 10 miles and then I decided to get the timing belt replaced by a mechanic. So he installed the belt, water pump and another new tensioner. And I kept the tensioner that only has 10 miles on it for future possible use.

Good concise video. Always wondered what that sounded like. Now, I know. THANKS!! BTW / FYI: I would recommend NEVER to skimp on the timing belt tensioner. The $40 one saves up front could cost $5,000 later on. Just use genuine Honda parts for this would be my recommendation.

Thanks for the video! Super helpful. Everything went well, but now my check engine light is on with a P0523 code - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor /Switch ‘A’ High. Maybe a small piece of debris got in to the sensor opening when I pulled the tensioner off?

If the Tensioner is failing, it’s likely that it’s also time to change the Timing Belt & Pulleys. If that Belt breaks, you’ll get Catastrophic Valve damage. This is an interference Engine, Valve to Piston contact is very likely. (Don’t take the chance, do all the components.)

Hey I have an 2009 Honda pilot. And I think I have same problem. Every time I press the gas pedal, I hear a rattling noise, I think it the tensioner because when I replaced the timing belt, I bought an oem tensioner not an OEM one. I’m not sure if my 09 pilot engine has the same configuration though.

Yeah, I just did mine today and I pulled it ahead of install. He ain't lying about needing the socket and extension as leverage. I didn't have one and used vice grips. It was a pain but it worked. Find that socket and extension to make it a whole lot easier.

If you turn the crank without tension in the belt, could it skip a tooth or two?
@danstromness5165
@danstromness5165 4 ай бұрын
I don't think so. The 'teeth' on those belts insert rather deeply into each cog, and the belt wraps around at least 2/3'rds of the circumference of each camshaft cog and the crank-cog. Since he is rotating it in the direction of the normal rotation JUST A WEE BIT, it should not be at all detrimental.

Ordered the same part in your video, got nervous and sent it to a shop and mechanic is saying the part has to be replaced by going in through engine and removing Plate Cover, pulleys and many different parts - and would cost 1,000 in labor 5 or 6 hours. He said the part in the video is Serpentine tensioner not timing tensioner. Its the same rattle noise, 2014 Honda Pilot LE, not a v6. Does he really need to remove all those parts to do the same job your showing? Is it timing or serpentine?
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat 2 күн бұрын
He’s talking about replacing the whole timing belt / water pump which I would recommend doing if you haven’t replaced it within 80k miles. But if you already did that and it’s making this same noise you can just replace the timing belt tensioner (like I did in this video)….most shops would probably recommend you to just replace the whole timing belt because the want to make money. Oh and your Pilot is a V6, they all are. This is timing belt tensioner NOT serpentine tensioner, serpentine belt is for your alternator, power steering etc…Hope this helps.

yes, the hydraulic fluid warms up and you get tension then no more slack making noise. I have the same with mine and i'm about to change it as well.

I have a similar noise coming from the front right tire area ('09 Acura TL w/ 3.5L V6). However, i don't feel any sort of odd vibration when i touch the back of the tensioner. Also, the noise is intermittent. Could it be from some other source?

Could be the drive belt tensioner (not the timing belt tensioner) failing.

How long had it been making that rattle before you fixed it? Mine is doing that now and I’m just wondering how much time I have to borrow before it might break. I just had to replace the alternator by a new battery and replace brakes and I’m wiped out. It is stressing me out so bad and I’m afraid the timing belt is going to break and everything I’ve put into it will be for nothing.
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat Ай бұрын
I can understand your frustration. I’m not sure how long this has been making the noise since it wasn’t my vehicle. If yours just started making this noise you should be ok for a little while. I would recommend doing the whole timing belt water pump replacement if you haven’t yet. Does the noise go away after it warms up?

@@BrianBalatbat im saying that because normally, the factory way is to set it at TDC but your method the internals could be anywhere and with the slight turn whose to say the belt cant slip if you cant see it 🤷🏾‍♂️
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat 3 ай бұрын
I get what you’re saying, if you’re doing the timing belt / water pump replacement then yes you have to set it to TDC first. But this one you’re just replacing the tensioner, these will not slip if you just rotate them slightly, just enough to get the new tensioner to slide in.
