@Lenard Born I managed to tune the PID values of the rocket the past week. I had to make some sort of a gyro/rig to hold the rocket in it's centre of gravity while still being able to have 2 degrees of freedom. So the past few days i managed to get it into a stable hover. Yesterday i made a launch platform and i'm planning to perform it's first maiden flight outside this evening when the wind starts to settle down.

I might be wrong but it looks like your jet vanes lack a bit of chamfer. The vanes controlling pitch seem to get in the way if the vanes controlling yaw, impeding both axes from being controlled at the same time (or at least limiting their control authority). Awesome project btw, keep it up!! 👍

Yes i noticed this too, it looked good on paper tho ;-) We'll see how it goes and if it doesn't work out i'll print another set. Already did a quick hover test without the flight computer attached, just spun up the motor, and it just stayed in place with no control input, so i guess (hope) i don't need a lot of throw on the vanes for basic controll of movement.

Fantastic work man. Not sure what you are planning for it (obviously not flights) but how about a ducted fan in front, and pump in some thick smoke, then you can show the flow control visually after the vanes. Probably add a laminar flow generator between the fan and the duct first.

I’m going to use a 6s 80mm fan for it which has about 2.5kg of max thrust. The weight of the 3D printed parts is currently well below this.

Love the project; you did a great job! I was wondering if you'd consider adding your own twist to it by using two servos instead of four--using one servo to deploy a leg and its opposing leg. Or even using a single servo, via a worm gear, to deploy all legs at once. Since scaling down motors is impractical, I figured you could reduce your weight by using some different mechanics for similar results!

I agree with this idea and maybe add in a barometer with a bottom optical flow or if you're feeling froggy a 4K optical sensor lol Or something for when it gets close to a certain height off the ground it will automatically deploy them in unison and to mitigate failure upon return landing.

Brian Brocken I have garage full of racing drones and have put the dji digital FPV system on everything rc planes/cars/boats! Which leads me to mention what I’m doing.. the dji system is almost perfect but I needs a WiFi module that will allow you to stream/upload videos.. also I would really like to be able to use the dji controller for my planes so I’m working on what I call the “plane plug” which will allow you to plug in servos like a regular receiver utilizing the receiver embedded in the dji air unit/caddx vista.. you really caught my attention with that chip design also I do a lot of CAD work so I was impressed by that as well! If you’d be interested in helping me make the plane plug I’d be happy to pay you or partner up.. lmk

OMG the jitter on that servos are pretty wild specially in the landing legs at the begging of the video, I don't know if it's the type pf servos or maybe your 5V rail needs some more caps, some ceramic ones for HF noise and also bundling all the signal wires together without any shielding or filtering it's a no no, I mean it works and it's a pretty nice designs but it's lacking smoothness.

The jitter you see is because i programmes the legs to come down slower than full speed and because the weight of the landing legs itself. When they are at full speed they are as smooth as butter. I’m using a non shielded network kabel at the moment but I should’ve had used a shielded one.

Looks pretty nice, but I have a few recommendations (from tvc on rocket motors). First off, I would highly advise against using a nano. The nano has a very slow speed and other alternatives (mainly the teensy series, the 3.2 and 4.0 are a similar size with WAY more power under their belt and great support, but also stm based boards) would provide much-needed speed especially when working with thrust vanes. A nano is a little underpowered for the necessary control loop that is running. Secondly, you should not have the servos directly taking the impact of the landing legs. When this happens, the servos use more current to maintain their position and can easily burn the traces on your pcb or pull too much current from your regulator. Also What was the point of all of the potentiometers(?). You can easily adjust the code to move their set points instead and you would save space on your board. Looks pretty cool, I looks forward to you taking my suggestions into account and finishing the project.

Hello Andy, 1: The arduino is only being used to control the speed and position of the landing legs, No tvc. 2: the landing legs are designed in a way that they lock in place. This means that when the legs are fully extended, the forces from the landing legs are in a direct line with the shaft of the servo. So no matter how hard you push, there will be no torque exerted on the shaft of the servo. 3: The purpose of the potentiometers is to fine tune the max and min position for each individual landing leg. This can be done in software like you say but using potentiometers it's a lot faster and easier to fine tune the positions. In the case you need to change out a servo you can easilly adjust it's possitions with this instead of having to connect your nano to the computer. Personal preference.

Great project but do you really need 4 servos? one release and latch mechanism would do the work, there is no need for variable leg position in my opinion.

Thank you Poij, the servos I'm now using have a torque rating of about 2.2kg*cm and a weigth of 9g. So 4 servo's combined equals a total torque of 8.8kg*cm and a weight of 36 grams. So ideally you would want to replace the 4 servo's with one servo that has the same ratings as the 4 servos combined. The closest one i could find was an MG996R digital servo with a stall torque of 15kg*cm and a weight of 55 grams, a lot more than the 4 seperate servos. Then you would also need to design and add a mechanism that allows the 4 legs to fold out, retract and lock in place with one servo, this mechanism itself would be more complex and would also add a lot of additional weight to the system. And then there's the question of where you're going to place this servo that's also a lot bigger than the 4 smaller ones. You would have to place it on one side of the rocket which causes a weight imbalance, a small one however, but undesirable. I'm afraid the cons outway the pros on this one in my opinion, but i could be wrong.

yes you're right putting the weight on the servo wasn't the smartest move actually, the servo doesn't have to provide any torque because it is fully ecxtended and in line with the shaft, however there's still a lot of force exerted on the servo horn. I have to take this into account in my next design.

Excelllent work, although I was starting to experience a sense of 'dread' as the motors were mounted (4) and a honking battery. What is weight of that thing? Would one motor with wires to the actuatorls on one side and battery to balance it out on the opposite side work?

I think you mean the servos? in this case i even have 8 of them ;-), they weigh about 9 gram each without leads, the electric ducted fan is able to pull 2.5 kg so the weight of the servos shouldn't be any problem. The battery of course is just for testing purposes so that i don't have to charge it that often while I'm testing out the bottom part of the rocket. I'll be using a 6s 1000mah battery in the first test flight. You want to use 1 servo for all the actuators?

Well made, but I like to mention: To much weight for the wires and all the stuff. A EDF is not so powerfull. So lowering the weight of all this "copper" stuff may be a good idea, Some times ago I made some experiments with EDFs and many of them did't have enough power to lift themselfs and a battery in a VTOL situation. My goal was > 3 Minutes of flight time. I didn't found a motor which could deliver this. I hope you will have a success. (Then I will buy such a motor :-) )

Yes I was thinking about this, but this also adds a lot of complexity to the build because everything has to fit nicely together. I now barely managed to do this but the heat wave we got here in Belgium warped some of the plastic a little bit and some legs now already struggle to close properly.

Really cool...BUT... it will immediately fall over upon landing unless you include a very sophisticated sensor system and pendulum sensor that will level the four legs independently on any/all unlevel terrains. A 'tri[pod' is the only way to get things to balance properly on unflat unlevel surfaces but also must bel leveled...just not as critical.

thats a good landing gear... but its plasitc on servos ment for LIGHT WEIGHT stuff... after adding the propulsion systems and and all- they will snap/break... you need to make them out of CarbonFiber HyBrid.
